"Video Production Company" is the first episode of the first season of the American comedy television series Freelancers. The episode premiered on YouTube, on March 28, 2019.[1] The episode was written by series co-star Mallory Everton and was directed by Jeremy Warner.
The episode introduces Arizona Goodwin (Whitney Call), Devin (Mallory Everton), Micah (Stacey Harkey), Owen (Stephen Meek), and Ryan (Matt Meese) as the crew of the video production company, Video Production Company. In this episode, the crew attempts to raise $4,000 after Micah accidentally stabs Frank Butts (James Perry), with a pen, while shooting an office safety demonstration video.
Plot[edit]
The episode opens with the Video Production Company crew presenting a pitch video to Tesla, to see if they would like to have an ad made by them. The pitch video explains each members job at the company, with Arizona Goodwin (Whitney Call) being the producer, Devin (Mallory Everton) being the editor, Micah (Stacey Harkey) being the light, sound, and make-up artist, Owen (Stephen Meek) being the director, and Ryan (Matt Meese) being the camera operator for the company. The pitch video contains a futurist theme, prompting a Tesla employee (Jasmine Fullmer) to refuse the offer and call for security when the group refuses to leave.
At home, Arizona and Devin are confronted by Joan (Natalie Madsen), a Krispy Kreme employee, who explains to Devin that Arizona used to work at Krispy Kreme as a professional sign dancer. Joan attempts to bribe Arizona to return, only for her to refuse, stating that she wants to follow her dreams.
Later, the group film a safety demonstration video for Frank Butts (James Perry), an employee at Sales Solution. Arizona notices that Micah has fallen asleep, and tells Owen to wake him up. After waking up, Micah knocks over a printer, which causes a pen to fly in Frank's direction. The pen stabs Frank in the shoulder, and the group questions how that accident was possible and why Micah was asleep in the first place. Micah explains that he couldn't sleep at night due to the fact Ryan was doing "the loudest stuff known to man," including eating chips and playing with maracas.
After being treated by a medic, Frank tells the group they have to pay for his injuries with their insurance, only to be told by the group they don't have any. Frank, still mad, tells the group to raise $4,000 by the end of the day, or risk being sued. At home, the group finds $800 inside their couch, and decide to go out to search for the remaining money. While searching for cash in a dumpster, Arizona and Devin are once again confronted by Joan, who offers Arizona an unlimited amount of donuts from Krispy Kreme, and a full-time job as a sign dancer.
After regrouping, the group adds up the money they found to a total of $2,000. Micah searched in his pillowcase, Owen volunteered for a scientific study, Ryan offered foot-rubs at a retirement home, and Arizona and Devin donated plasma eight times each, by disguising themselves as different people. Devin reveals she traded the group's house for a tent.
Joan arrives once again and offers Arizona a full-time job, and the $2,000 the group needs. She gives Arizona a contract, which Arizona signs. Joan gives the group the money, leaves, and the group pay Frank the $4,000 he asked for. Joan returns after she finds out Arizona signed with the wrong name, and after threatening to sue them, Owen eats the contract. Enraged, Joan throws a billboard at Arizona, misses, and stabs Frank on his uninjured shoulder. Frank threatens to sue Joan and the group goes home to their new tent.
