Woodcoin
Woodcoin is a decentralized currency based on physical wooden tokens marked with unique alphanumeric codes. Each coin has a visible wood grain pattern, making it resistant to counterfeiting. Unlike most digital cryptocurrencies, Woodcoin combines a tangible medium (wooden coins) with a distributed verification system.
History
Woodcoin was created in 2025 by Veljko Milisavljevic. The project was designed as an alternative to traditional cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, with the goal of embedding natural scarcity and demurrage into its design.
The name derives from the use of physical wood tokens as the basis of issuance. Images of the coins are distributed via peer-to-peer networks to verify authenticity.
Design
Each Woodcoin is assigned an eight-character alphanumeric code (0–9, a–f). The wood’s natural grain patterns provide an additional level of uniqueness.
Demurrage
The system incorporates a demurrage mechanism, where every year on December 31, one symbol from the hexadecimal set (0–9, a–f) is randomly selected. All coins whose codes end with that symbol are voided, and a new batch is minted. This ensures continuous circulation and discourages hoarding.
Verification
Coin authenticity is verified by comparing the wood grain and code against images published in a decentralized peer-to-peer torrent network. This makes forgery difficult.
Applications
Woodcoin has been proposed for use in:
- International trade
- Local or community currencies as a hybrid between physical and digital systems.
Reception
As of 2025, Woodcoin has received limited media coverage.
