Xeros Technology Group plc is an AIM-listed technology company, located in Advanced Manufacturing Park, Rotherham, South Yorkshire.[2][3][4][5] The company licences products to reduce water and energy consumption. It has three divisions, including cleaning technologies (which includes domestic and commercial laundry), apparel manufacturing and filtration.[6][7][8] The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange with ticker code XSG.[9][10]
It was founded in 2006 after being spun out of Leeds University. The company’s patented technologies provide material, economic, operational, and sustainability improvements in water-intensive industries such as laundry and apparel manufacturing.[11][7][8] Its first product was the Xeros Washing Machine.[12][13]
The company has commercial agreements with global equipment manufacturers, including IFB Industries, Ramsons Garment Finishing Equipment, Midea Group, and others, to incorporate Xeros’ technologies in their own products spanning household and commercial laundry and denim finishing.[3][14][15][16][17]

Xeros Technology Group was spun-out of Leeds University, where it developed a patented near-waterless washing system using a method of particular kind of polymers to clean clothes.[18][19] The company was founded to commercialise research from the University of Leeds. The focus of the research was on the use of polymers in reducing water during washing and dyeing of fabrics.[13][20]
The polymer system is a result of Stephen Burkinshaw’s research, a chemist at the University of Leeds.[12][21] He studied the use of polymers in the washing and dyeing of fabrics. He found that polymers greatly improved efficiency and performance, creating an almost waterless process with significant reductions in the use of chemicals and energy, and improvements in the quality of fabrics.[12]
Initially, Xeros developed the findings of this research into products suitable for commercial laundries, producing the Xeros Washing Machine.[13] It has since developed the technologies for sectors including domestic laundry and apparel manufacturing, including denim finishing and garment dyeing.[7]
Description[edit]
With its headquarters in Sheffield, Xeros develops and provides water-saving, filtration, and effluent reduction technologies.[22] It is based in Advanced Manufacturing Park, Rotherham, South Yorkshire and is part of the Scientific Research & Development Services Industries.[2][3][23][24]
The products developed and licensed by Xeros contribute to improvements to the water supply problem.[25][26] The technology replaces large amounts of fresh water used in laundry and apparel processes, with special spheroid shaped polymers.[18][21] The polymers used in the system are made of nylon.[12]
The technologies introduced by the company are used in commercial and domestic laundry and apparel manufacturing. Xeros also licences the technology for use in the leather tanning industry.[15][16][19][27] The company has three core products, and these include XOrbs, XDrum, and XFiltra, which it licenses to laundry and apparel original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).[28]
The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange with XSG as its ticker code. As of May 21, 2020, its ordinary shares are being traded at 0.15P and has a market capitalisation of £25m. The company has issued 1,984m shares.[9][10][29]
Polymer technology[edit]
Polymer cleaning technology is based on research by Professor Stephen Burkinshaw at the University of Leeds. The focus of the research was the role played by water in conventional textile dyeing and washing processes. His research showed that water plays two key roles in these processes: primarily, wetting and swelling fabrics and secondary functions such as heat, agitation, transport of detergents or chemicals and rinsing.[13][20]
The research established that these secondary functions could be undertaken by an alternative medium such as polymers with appropriate chemical and physical attributes. These polymers are low cost, readily available, and fully recyclable. The polymer was identified as nylon.[30]
Commercialisation[edit]
The company has commercial agreements in place in each of these areas with several OEMs, including Jiangsu SeaLion Technologies, IFB Industries, Ramsons Garment Finishing Equipment, Crystal International, and Midea Group.[3][14][15][31][32] These agreements include:
Licensing agreement[edit]
On March 23, 2020, Xeros signed a deal with Ramsons Garment Finishing Equipment Pvt Ltd, one of India’s largest garment finishing equipment suppliers in South Asia. The deal is to develop a range of innovative, sustainable garment finishing equipment.[33][3][14] As per the deal, Ramsons received an exclusive license for the manufacturing and selling of Xeros-enabled garment finishing and dyeing equipment in South Asia, with denim finishing as the focus area.[15] In addition to this, Xeros signed a deal with IFB Industries, an Indian appliances group, to manufacture domestic washing machines in May 2019. These machines will be manufactured using XOrb and XDrum technologies by Xeros.[34]
Development and licensing agreement[edit]
It is a ten-year-long agreement which covers the commercialization of XOrb and XDrum technologies into selected ranges of IFB's domestic and commercial sized washing machines.[35] IFB has been given rights to the Indian market on an exclusive basis and to other South Asian territories on a non-exclusive basis.[16]
Joint Development Agreement (JDA)[edit]
JDA is Xeros’ first agreement in textiles with Dongguan Crystal Knitting and Garment, a subsidiary of Crystal International Group. The scope of this agreement is to prove the technical and commercial benefits of XOrb and XDrum technologies in garment production.[35]
Products[edit]
Xeros Technology Group has developed three core technologies, including XOrb, XDrum, and XFiltra. The combination of these technologies provides reduced water consumption, lower energy and chemical use, and minimal emissions of chemicals and microplastics.[7]
Xeros-enabled washing machines[edit]
A washing machine which uses Xeros technologies works by adding spherical-shaped polymer balls, called XOrbs, into the machine drum along with the fabrics, replacing 80% of the water used during the process.[12][21]
XOrbs are added from inside the XDrum at the start of the wash cycle. The polymer-spheres mix with the clothes along with a small amount of water and massage the garments. The water consumed in the cycle is filtered with the XFiltra, which reduces microfibre loss to wastewater. The XOrbs automatically return to the XDrum after completion of the wash cycle.[7][36]
XOrbs[edit]
XOrbs are small, recyclable, polymer spheres. These spheres are used in specially designed washing machines and stored in XDrums.[34][6] It includes cold water washing and stain removal.[7]
XDrum[edit]
XDrum is a patented technology designed to replace traditional washing machine drums. It acts by introducing XOrbs into wash cycles and removing them at the end of the process. It then stores the XOrbs when they are not in use.[34]
XFiltra[edit]
XFiltra is a microplastic filtration system designed by the company as a component of washing machines. It can remove 99% of microplastic fibres from laundry effluent. The three core components of this system include filter, pump, and a de-watering unit. It can fit into any front-loading washing machine during the manufacturing process. It functions without disposable filter cartridges and can be licensed by any domestic washing machine manufacturer.[2][37][38]
Sustainability[edit]
The company reduces water use by 50% across all applications. The technology also offers reductions in the use of energy and chemicals of around 50% with low harmful emissions. XFiltra addresses the issue of microplastic pollution which results from the washing of clothes and textiles containing synthetic fibres.[38][7]
