Ziad Bashir (born August 10, 1977) is a Pakistani businessman and entrepreneur. In 2003, Bashir launched Pakistan's largest lifestyle retail chain, IDEAS, which now boasts over 45 outlets across the country. The chain revolutionized the concept of selling traditional fabrics in Pakistan by creating special packaging that increased sales exponentially. This concept was later adopted by the entire Pakistani fabric market. In 2003, Bashir founded ArwenTech, a global enterprise solution company.[clarification needed]
Early life[edit]
Bashir was born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan, where he attended the Karachi American School and later went on to earn a bachelor's degree in entrepreneurial studies from Babson College in the United States. Bashir's family is known as the first family of textiles in Pakistan. Gul Ahmed Textiles, which was founded by his grandfather Haji Ali Mohammad, is a leading Pakistani fashion brand.
Career[edit]
Bashir graduated from college and moved back to Pakistan where he revolutionized the retail fabric industry. As a Director at Gul Ahmed, Bashir introduced female workers in the stitching factories and under him the stitching unit expanded 10 fold. In 2003, he launched IDEAS, a lifestyles outlet store in Karachi. The store revolutionized the way home textiles and fabrics were sold in the country. The unique advertising campaigns featuring the top models of Pakistan made the brand grow in popularity and by 2014, IDEAS had spread to over 13 cities boasting over 45 retail outlets.
Being an entrepreneur, Bashir founded ArwenTech, a leading tech company in Pakistan and in 2007, ArwenTech created a dashboard for the Mayor of Karachi to view all his departments and to see the service levels they were operating upon. There were 3 ways that citizens could register a complaint, through telephone, web and walk ins to complaint centers. The complainants would receive a number through which they could track their complaints. A drill down graphics system, changed the way the local government interacted with the citizens of Pakistan's largest city, Karachi.
Since early 2005, Bashir has served as chairman of LATI Landhi Association of Trade and Industry. Landhi employs over 300,000 people in various industries and the association is responsible for raising issues for its members on a national level.
Bashir is also CEO of LITE which is LATI's infrastructure arm responsible for developing all local infrastructure including roads, sewage systems and electricity distribution.
Bashir is a member of YPO Young Presidents organization and at the age of 32, became the President of YPO Pakistan and is currently serving on the board.
He is also currently serving on the executive committee of the Pakistan Board of Investment as well as the Punjab Board of Investment and Trade.
Bashir was part of a group of Pakistanis who worked on the environment degradation report for the Standing Senate Committee in 2007.
Bashir was also the youngest member of the spinners' committee in the International Textiles Manufacturers Federation (ITMF), writing country reports on the state of spinning around the world.[citation needed]
