In May 1949 the 168th Division(Chinese: 第168师) was activated in Rehe from the 20th Military Sub-district of Rehe Military District.
The division was composed of:
- 502nd Regiment
- 503rd Regiment
- 504th Regiment
In January 1950 the division was transferred to Liaoxi Military District's control.
In July 1950 the division was inactivated.
- 502nd Regiment was transferred to the Guard Division of Northeastern Military Region.
- Headquarters, 168th Division, along with 503rd and 504th Regiments were transferred to the PLAAF, later as Headquarters, 7th Aviation Division, 18th Aviation Regiment, and 20th Aviation Regiment, respectively.
- Three battalions from the division were transferred to border defense units.
