The 203rd Division (Chinese: 第203师) was created in January 1949 under the Regulation of the Redesignations of All Organizations and Units of the Army, issued by Central Military Commission on November 1, 1948,.[1] basing on the 17th Brigade, 6th Column of the Huabei Military Region Field Force. Its history can be traced to the 8th Independent Brigade (2nd formation), Jizhong Military District, formed in August 1947.

The division was part of the 68th Corps. Under the flag of the 203rd Division, it was engaged in the Chinese Civil War, including the Qingfengdian Campaign, Shijiazhuang Campaign, Zhangjiakou Campaign, and Taiyuan Campaign.

In March 1951, Artillery Regiment, 203rd Division was activated, which was later renamed as 583rd Artillery Regiment in 1953.

In June 1951, 203rd Division moved into Korean Peninsula along with the Corps HQ. It was engaged in defensive operations against UN Forces in summer-fall 1951, during which it suffered heavy casualties. In June–July 1953, the division took part in the Battle of Kumsong during which it decimated the ROK Capital Division guarding the left shoulder of the Kumsong bulge, during which the 607th Regiment of the division was responsible for the destruction of the 1st ROK Regiment and the US 555th Field Artillery Howitzer Battalion[2][3].

In March 1955 the division pulled out from North Korea and redeployed in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province.[4]

In April 1960 the division was renamed as 203rd Army Division(Chinese: 陆军第203师). By then the division was composed of:

  • 607th Regiment
  • 608th Regiment
  • 609th Regiment
  • 583nd Artillery Regiment

In March 1963, 331st Tank Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment attached to the division from the 126th Army Division.

In October 1967, 331st Tank Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment detached from the division and joined the 2nd Tank Division.

In August 1969, 583rd Artillery Regiment was renamed as Artillery Regiment, 203rd Army Division.

In May 1976, the division moved to Jiaohe, Jilin along with the corps HQ.

In September 1985 the division was inactivated and merged into the 4th Garrison Division of Shenyang Military Region[5]
