Dr. Ayodele "Gregory" Oni is an international commercial lawyer[1] (specializing in energy investment law and policy)[2][3], adjunct lecturer of law, author, policy consultant[4][5][6] and businessman. He invests in financial services businesses, mid-stream energy (gas, in particular) and automobiles businesses. He sits on the boards of some companies in the energy and financial services sectors. He is a specialist with expertise in petroleum, energy, and commercial law.

He is a Partner and the Chair of the Energy and Natural Resources Practice Group, at the Nigerian Law Firm Bloomfield Law Practice[7], based in Lagos, Nigeria. Who's Who Legal[8], an international legal directory, recognizes him as a commercial lawyer “in a league of his own”. Additionally, the Chambers and Partners[9] and Legal 500[10] ranks him among the World’s leading lawyers in the Chambers and Partners and Legal 500.

Education and Awards[edit]

Ayodele studied Law, at the Lagos State University where he graduated top of his class and won the Dean’s Prize. He received an LL.M in Energy and Environmental Law from the University of Calgary in Canada[11] and also holds a Ph.D. in Energy Security.

He won the Nigerian young lawyer of the year award in the 2010 edition of the Nigerian Legal Awards and is also the author of Nigeria’s first text on the electric power sector- The Nigerian Electric Power Sector: Policy: Law: Negotiation Strategy: Business Further, he was chosen as top 40 Nigerian lawyers under the age of 40 years.[12]

Transactions Deals and Speaking Engagements[edit]

Ayodele Oni was one of the speakers at the Africa Rising Event in the year 2014 and has also spoken on CNBC in connection with policy and other issues, particularly relating to the energy sector[4], has been quoted by Bloomberg[13], writes an Electric Power column for the Businessday Newspaper[14] and Lexology.[15] Ayodele has also been actively involved in most of the big-ticket deals related to the energy sector in Nigeria and also participated in several power, oil and gas transactions, including the Shell divestment deals and Chevron’s divestment of interests in several oil mining leases, marginal field transactions and several oil and gas acquisitions or divestments transactions. He has also drafted and or negotiated several power purchase and gas sale and purchase agreements for private sector participants and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (the “NNPC”).

Furthermore, he has participated extensively in the deregulation and privatization of the Nigerian electric power sector, acting as an advisor on eight significant transactions. He is currently advising on several interesting transactions, including- power projects, an integrated gas project and certain transactions/projects undertaken by Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the federal government of Nigeria on the post-privatization restructuring of the electric power sector.

Apart from the preceding, he has also authored several articles in leading law publications and journals.[16] Ayodele facilitates training sessions and conferences on diverse subjects relating to oil, gas and power, both locally and internationally.[17][18] He is also an adjunct lecturer who teaches Energy Policy at the Center for Petroleum, Energy Economics and Law, the University of Ibadan.
