Boybreed (born November 21, 1992)(pronounced: /bɔɪˈbriːd/) is a Nigerian Afro-pop duo composed of identical twin brothers Chibuzor Franklyn Amajuoyi and Nnamdi Kennedy Amajuoyi.[1] They are both singers, songwriters, producers, graphics designers and are currently signed to Bovibes Entertainment.[2] They recently released the remix to their hit song, Slowly, in which they featured Nigerian reggae-dancehall singer, Patoranking.
Early life[edit]
Boybreed is made up of identical twin brothers, Chibuzor Franklyn Amajuoyi and Nnamdi Kennedy Amajuoyi. Though born in Lagos, on November 21, 1992, they hail from Mbaise local government area in Imo state. Growing up, these twin brothers developed interest in music at a very young age, where they took a keen interest in listening to Fela Anikulapo Kuti's collection among other artists whenever their mum played to listen, which was a lot of the time as she is also quite the music lover. They wrote their first song at age 9.[3]
Nnamdi, the younger of the twin, began a professional solo career in 2012 before his brother, Chibuzor, teamed up with him in 2013 to form the duo Boybreed and released Money Maker and Sista Peperempe in 2013. They began playing at shows in their university campus and also at wedding ceremonies. Later that year, they got noticed and signed on to the record label, Bovibes Entertainment.
The brothers graduated from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri in 2015 where Chibuzor graduated with a bachelors degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Nnamdi graduated with a bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering.[3]
Musical career[edit]
Boybreed professionally started their music career in 2013 while in the university. They got signed to Bovibes Entertainment in 2013 when their attention was brought to the notice of the CEO of Bovibes Entertainment, Mr. Ibe Boco.[4] Upon signing, the label released their debut single "Slowly" which was produced by Ekelly on the 15th of July, 2014.[5] Subsequently, the video was shot and directed by Unlimited LA. The single introduced Boybreed to the Nigerian music scene as Nigerian reggae-dancehall artiste, Patoranking called to be featured on the remix of "Slowly". Their management company, Zimylink Brand Managers, through her official twitter account, posted a teaser poster and trailer of the visuals for the remix that had been shot by Clarence Peters and announced that the video would be due to be released in the early weeks of October 2015. The video was officially released online and across TV stations on 12th October 2015.
Prior to being signed by their record label, Boybreed had dropped some singles such as Sista Peperempe, Money Maker and Mary Kay while in the university. Mary Kay featured their close friends and rappers, Psychobarz and King Perry. These singles were successful in their school. In 2014 while in the studio, Boybreed did a cover remix of Blackmagic's award winning single "Repete" and uploaded it on their YouTube channel. Also they released a cover of the Rihanna's hit single Bitch Better Have My Money in 2015 with producer, Reflex Sounds, to much acclaim by their peers in the music industry.
On the 9th of August 2015, Boybreed was nominated and won the Best Upcoming Act Category at the Nigerian Teens Choice Awards (NTCA) at the prestigious Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.[6] An award that was won the previous year by Nigerian pop sensation Korede Bello.[7] Also on the 3rd of October, Boybreed received an award at the Imo Fashion and Entertainment Awards (IFEA 2015).[8]
Comparison to other artists[edit]
Due to the fact that Boybreed are identical twins, unsurprisingly, there have also been comparison between them and Nigeria twin pop acts, P-Square. During an interview with Encomium magazine, Boybreed stated "...being a twin is the first unique thing. I think, people love twins, especially when they are identical, like P-Square and others. But we don’t really want people to compare us with them...besides, our genre of music is unique, different from P-Square or any other singing twins..."[4]
Fashion Style[edit]
In an interview with JayPaul, host of E-morda on RaveTV, Boybreed cites Tinie Tempah and Kanye West as fashion icons that influence their urban fashion sense.[9]
Personal life[edit]
Boybreed cites Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Bob Marley, Chris Brown, Akon and Tuface as musical influences for their music. Also having experienced the effects of the sickle cell anemia with their close cousin suffering from the illness, Boybreed have since been a strong advocate for Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness, using their influence to spread the message among their fans and society.
