People's Republic of China began to participate at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1985,[1] and has competed, except for one year, since then.[2][3]

History[edit]

China had participated informally in the 1985 International Mathematical Olympiad. Only two students were sent.[4] Starting from 1986, except in 1998 when the International Mathematical Olympiad was held in Taiwan, China has always participated.[5] Chinese Mathematical Society organizes the Selection Process, and the National round, which has been organized since 1960.[6]

The preparation of China for Mathematical Olympiad is very high. It only one time got surpassed by United States.[7] Since the beggining of the XXI century, India and China competes to be the first at the International Mathematical Olympiad.[8] During Hard Problems The Road to the World's Toughest Math Contest film, that was shown.[9]

China has 168 gold medals, 36 silver medals and 6 bronze medals.[10][11]

Selection process[edit]

Many of China's students, who exhibited exceptional performance at the International Mathematical Olympiad, later became outstanding mathematicians, scientists, and technologists.[12]

The China selection process consists of the China Team Selection Test, the final stage used to determine the six students participating in the IMO from China. There can be 3 to 5 individual tests in the series.[13][14]
