Danny Bosten (born October 29, 1961), better known by his stage name Das Ding, is a Dutch music producer and modular synth manufacturer based in Rotterdam. He has performed at a number of Dutch music festivals and venues, including the Amsterdam Dance Event[3], WORM, Motel Mozaïque, GOGBOT and others, as well as internationally at such venues as the Boiler Room's Present Perfect Festival in St. Petersburg[4], The Shelter in Shanghai, China[5], and the Urban Spree in Berlin.

Biography

Background

Bosten first began producing electronic music in the 1980s. A bedroom producer[6], most of his early work was created using borrowed recording equipment from his brother's band. It was during this time he coined the name "Das Ding", inspired by a German-language run of The Thing from Another World, as well as the Kantian concept of the thing-in-itself ("Das Ding an sich")[7]. Bosten went on to self-release a number of Das Ding cassette tapes, as well as collaborative works under the name "Les Yeux Interdits", on an independent label dubbed "Tear Apart Tapes". These tapes circulated in mailing lists and were featured in zines of the local Dutch DIY synth scene, but remained relatively obscure.

Music

Das Ding's musical style combines a characteristic 1970s analog synthesizer sound with elements of dark synth and industrial music. According to Bosten, major influences include Fad Gadget, Kraftwerk and New Order[8].

Rediscovery and return

After a period of obscurity that spanned multiple decades, "Das Ding" was discovered by Veronica Vasicka of Minimal Wave Records after it had been posted on a blog about unknown synth music. Vasicka then contacted Bosten to propose a "proper" release of old Das Ding material; this eventually culminated in Minimal Wave's release of "H.S.T.A.", a remaster of Bosten's first self-released cassette from 1982, with Das Ding also being featured on "The Minimal Wave Tapes" (2010), a compilation album released through Stones Throw Records featuring tracks by an ensemble of pioneers of the minimal wave genre.

The positive reception Bosten's work received resulted in a number of further re-releases on the Minimal Wave label, such as "Schedelvreter" in 2012, an experimental side project, and "Missing Tapes" in 2017[9]. The return of Das Ding as an active project also resulted in the release of Das Ding's first new, original album since the 1980s, "Why is My Life So Boring" in 2014.

Modular activities

Aside from his musical career, Bosten is also a prolific hobbyist manufacturer of modular synthesizers, selling eurorack modules and DIY kits through the American e-commerce platform Etsy.
