Devraj Sanyal (born 21 March 1975[1][2][additional citation(s) needed]) is an Indian businessman and musician.[citation needed] Since 2011 he has been the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Universal Music Group & EMI Music, India & South Asia, based in the company headquarters in Mumbai.[citation needed] He is also the Managing Director of the group's Publishing business "Universal Music Publishing Group" for the same region.[citation needed] He is charged with the management and operational running of all Universal Music Group businesses in the region.[citation needed] Sanyal runs the Universal Music Label, Universal Music Publishing, EMI Music and their allied businesses as its MD and CEO.[citation needed] In August 2019, he co-founded Mass Appeal India, the first ever global imprint for Indigenious HipHop in a joint venture between Mass Appeal USA, the label cofounded by legendary hiphop artists NAS (Nasir Jones) and founder CEO Peter Bittenbender.[citation needed][clarification needed]

Sanyal has differentiated the Indian & South Asian opco of Universal Music Group by aligning it with a host of profitable allied non-traditional businesses such as Live, Merchandising, Branded Content, Artist Accelerator & Intellectual Properties.[citation needed][clarification needed]

Sanyal has been a performer in heavy metal band Brahma since 1994[1] which has led to some media dubbing him "the heavy metal CEO".[2] Sanyal is also a judge on TV talent show The Stage.[3]

Early life and education[edit]

Sanyal comes from Mumbai and studied at the St. Xavier's Boys' Academy, Mumbai.[2] His father, a computer scientist, wanted him to study engineering, but since he knew that he would not follow his father's path, and he studied statistics at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai as a compromise.[2] Having been interested in music as long as he can remember, Sanyal started using a guitar when in college.[1] He also met the "long-haired, drug-addict-looking dudes" who would become his bandmates in the Brahma band at college.[2]

One cold winter night[when?] at the Indian Institutes of Technology in the late 1990s, he was performing with his band (who, despite a no-alcohol policy, drank a few shots of warm brandy) when he decided to start climbing the lightning truss.[2][clarification needed]

Career[edit]

At the age of 19, Sanyal set up his first business, the event company Curtain Raisers, with a friend, and they set up shop in a one-room office in Dhobitalao.[2] Soon after setting up the business, they were managing 700 events per year.[2] By his graduation, he was both part of a popular metal band and of a successful business that was an early entrant in the events industry; however, he decided to pursue a job and shut down his business.[2]

In 1995 he moved to the inception team[clarification needed] of Elle Magazine in India to look after advertising & brand.[citation needed] In 1996, he joined Elle as a marketing manager.[2] He then worked at Baccarose and The Times of India; at the latter, he set up the 360 Degrees brand under A. P. Parigi.[2] He then moved to the Times of India in 2001 to set up the Group's Below the Line Businesses and creating the company 360 Degrees.[citation needed][clarification needed]

In January 2004, Sanyal was hired by Percept Ltd as chief operating officer of their below-the-line company Percept D'Mark.[2] Sanyal spent the next 9 years at Percept Limited as COO & then CEO of PSE ( Percept Sports & Entertainment).[4][5][clarification needed][dead link] He had become the CEO of Percept Sports and Entertainment, which handles all group interests besides media and advertising, by mid-2007.[2] Sanyal helped set up Sunburn Festival and the India Fashion Week in 2007.[2]

Sanyal joined Universal Music Group in 2011 as MD[clarification needed] and CEO in 2011.[2] Since joining it, he has worked to make a multi-pronged business model[weasel words], including merchandising, live events, branded content, and festivals.[2] He partners with independent musicians, and aims to make Indian musicians into global pop stars.[2] In 2011 he moved to Universal Music Group, India & South Asia, now reporting to Adam Granite, EVP Market Development, Universal Music Group & continues as its Managing Director & Chief Executive till date.[citation needed][clarification needed]

Devraj Sanyal has also been recognized as part of Business Today’s Top 25 CEO's under 40 and is a recipient of the Udyog Ratna Award in India for 2013. He was recently awarded the FAME leadership award for Media & Entertainment for the year 2014.

Devraj serves as one of the judges of India's first and only All English Talent Shows on Colors Infinity, now in its 3rd Season.[3]

By 2018, Sanyal had worked continually for 26 years, spending 15 of them as a band frontman.[2]

Personal life[edit]

Sanyal is married to Nikita Sanyal and has a 13-year-old[when?] daughter, Sera.[citation needed] His favorite bands include Metallica, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden; he also enjoys retro music[clarification needed], such as that of the Bee Gees, and jazz music.[1] Besides playing metal music, he is also passionate about his vinyl record collection.[2] He has five guitars in his office, including a custom 1967 Gibson Les Paul and a Kramer Flying V.[2]
