Timeline of living premiers[edit]
This is a chronological list of all who served as the Premier of New South Wales and were still living, at different periods in history. There has been only one time period when there was only one living premier, beginning with the appointment of Stuart Donaldson in June 1856 and ending with the appointment of Charles Cowper in August 1856.
There have been two time periods when 11 living current or former premiers co-existed. The first period was from the appointment of Mike Baird on 17 April 2014 to the death of Neville Wran on 20 April 2014. The second and longest period has been ongoing since the appointment of Chris Minns on 28 March 2023.
If one includes future premiers as well as past and current premiers, there have been three time periods when 22 different premiers co-existed. (see Statistics)

Statistics[edit]
- Because he was the first premier, and the fact that there have been at least two premiers living since the appointment of Charles Cowper on 26 August 1856, Stuart Donaldson is the only person to ever hold the distinction of being the only living premier (from 6 June 1856 to 26 August 1856).
- In addition, Charles Cowper (from 26 August 1856 to 3 October 1856), George Dibbs, and George Reid (from 11 July 1897 to 14 September 1899) are the only other persons to have been one of two or less living premiers.
- During two periods in the History of New South Wales have there been 11 living premiers. The first such period was from 17 April 2014 to 20 April 2014 (when Tom Lewis, Neville Wran, Barrie Unsworth, Nick Greiner, John Fahey, Bob Carr, Morris Iemma, Nathan Rees, Kristina Keneally, Barry O'Farrell, and Mike Baird were alive). The second and most recent period has been ongoing since 28 March 2023 (with Barrie Unsworth, Nick Greiner, Bob Carr, Morris Iemma, Nathan Rees, Kristina Keneally, Barry O'Farrell, Mike Baird, Gladys Berejiklian, Dominic Perrottet, and Chris Minns as the living premiers). The longest period where there have been 11 living premiers has been the 1 year, 222 days since Chris Minns was appointed in March 2023.
- Tom Lewis was the only person to be both one of four or less living premiers (from 11 January 1985 to 4 July 1986 and 28 July 1987 to 25 March 1988) and one of the 11 living premiers (from 17 April 2014 to 20 April 2014).
- There have been 24 administrations during which a premier has not died, the most recent being the administration of Dominic Perrottet. This does not include the administration of John Storey (who was himself the only premier to die during his administration) nor the administration of the incumbent Chris Minns as no premier has died since John Fahey who died during the administration of Gladys Berejiklian.
- Conversely, only during the administration of Henry Parkes has there been as many as four deaths during an administration. Only once (during the administration of Neville Wran) has there been as many as three deaths during an administration.
- Charles Cowper holds the distinction of serving for the longest period without the death of premier during his term (6 years, 352 days). In recent years, the premier who served the longest without a death in his term was Nick Greiner, who served for 4 years and 91 days.
- The longest period between deaths of premiers was the 14 years and 345 days between the deaths of Eric Willis on 10 May 1999 and Neville Wran on 20 April 2014. The shortest period was the 95 days between the deaths of George Fuller on 22 July 1940 and Thomas Waddell on 25 October 1940.
- If the longest period between deaths is to be exceeded, no premier must die before 23 August 2035 (the current oldest and second oldest surviving premiers, Barrie Unsworth and Nick Greiner, would then be 101 and 88 years old respectively).
- The second longest period was the 11 years and 286 days between the deaths of Jack Renshaw on 28 July 1987 and Eric Willis on 10 May 1999.
- Only three times (in 1886, 1922, and 1940) have two premiers died in the same year.
- Following his administration's end in 1857, Henry Parker lived to see a record 16 administrations prior to his death in February 1881. Thomas Waddell follows with 14 administrations after his own administration ended in 1904, prior to his death in October 1940. In modern times, the premier to have lived to see the most administrations following their own was Barrie Unsworth, with 11 following the end of his administration in 1988.
- If one includes future as well as past and current premiers, the record sits at 22:
- Between James Dooley's birth on 26 April 1877 and Henry Parker's death on 2 February 1881, the following premiers were alive: Henry Parker, William Forster, John Robertson, James Martin, Henry Parkes, James Farnell, Alexander Stuart, George Dibbs, Patrick Jennings, George Reid, William Lyne, John See, Thomas Waddell, Joseph Carruthers, Charles Wade, James McGowen, William Holman, John Storey, James Dooley, George Fuller, Jack Lang, and Thomas Bavin.
- Between Bob Heffron's birth on 10 September 1890 and John Robertson's death on 8 May 1891, the following premiers were alive: John Robertson, Henry Parkes, George Dibbs, Patrick Jennings, George Reid, William Lyne, John See, Thomas Waddell, Joseph Carruthers, Charles Wade, James McGowen, William Holman, John Storey, James Dooley, George Fuller, Jack Lang, Thomas Bavin, Bertram Stevens, Alexander Mair, James McGirr, Joseph Cahill, and Bob Heffron.
- Between William McKell's birth on 26 September 1891 and Henry Parkes' death on 27 April 1896, the following premiers were alive: Henry Parkes, George Dibbs, Patrick Jennings, George Reid, William Lyne, John See, Thomas Waddell, Joseph Carruthers, Charles Wade, James McGowen, William Holman, John Storey, James Dooley, George Fuller, Jack Lang, Thomas Bavin, Bertram Stevens, Alexander Mair, William McKell, James McGirr, Joseph Cahill, and Bob Heffron.
- Since the appointment of John See on 27 March 1901 (a period of 123 years, 223 days), there have been at least four premiers living, and since the appointment of Nick Greiner on 25 March 1988 (a period of 36 years, 225 days), there have been at least five premiers living.
Oldest living premiers of New South Wales[edit]
Not all premiers live to become the oldest of their time. Of the 36 deceased premiers, 16 eventually became the oldest of their time, while 20 did not (including both premiers who died in office, and 18 others). Jack Lang became the oldest living premier when Thomas Bavin died in 1941 and remained so until his death in 1975, for a record 34 years and 27 days. Because he was the first premier, Stuart Donaldson became the oldest living premier when he was appointed in 1856, but he held this distinction for only 81 days.
On one occasion the oldest living premier lost this distinction not by his death, but due to the appointment of a premier who was older. Stuart Donaldson lost this distinction when Charles Cowper was appointed. William McKell was the oldest to acquire this distinction at the age of 86 years, and 304 days. Neville Wran, who was aged 87 years, and 191 days when he died, on 20 April 2014 was the oldest premier to die without ever acquiring this distinction. John Fahey who died on 12 September 2020 aged 75 years and 246 days is the most recent premier to die without ever acquiring this distinction.
