This is a list of premiers of Western Australia by age, including when they were born, what age they were when they were appointed premier, what age were they when they left the office and the age at which they died, or their current age as of 22 November 2024 if they are still alive. The table can be sorted by each different category.
The date of appointment as premier is the date on which they were sworn in by the Governor for their first term. The day on which they departed office is the final day of their final term. This is either the day a new premier was appointed or their date of death if they died whilst in office.
Overview[edit]
The median age of a Premier on the first day of their first term is roughly 49 years, and 353 days which falls between Mark McGowan and Philip Collier. The youngest person to assume the office was John Scaddan at 35 years and 64 days. The oldest person to assume office was John Tonkin at 69 years and 29 days.
The oldest living former premier is Peter Dowding, born 6 October 1943 (age 81 years, 47 days). The youngest living former premier is Mark McGowan, born 13 July 1967, (age 57 years, 132 days).
The longest-lived premier was Charles Court who died on 22 December 2007 aged 96 years and 84 days. John Tonkin was the second longest-lived premier, aged 93 years and 260 days, 2 years and 189 days short of Court. The oldest living premier, Peter Dowding will tie Tonkin if he lives to 23 June 2037, and tie Court if he lives to 29 December 2039. The shortest-lived Premier was George Leake who died in office at the age of 45 years and 203 days on 24 June 1902.
The premier with the longest retirement is Frank Wise. He left office on 1 April 1947, and died 39 years and 89 days later on 29 June 1986. Brian Burke left office on 25 February 1988. If he's still alive on 25 May 2027, he will surpass Wise's record, and become the premier with the longest retirement. The premier with the shortest retirement is Frank Wilson, who died on 7 December 1918, 1 year and 162 days after leaving office on 28 June 1917.

Timeline of living premiers[edit]
This is a chronological list of all who served as the Premier of Western Australia and were still living, at different periods in history. There has been only one time period when there was only one living premier, beginning with the appointment of John Forrest in December 1890 and ending with the appointment of George Throssell in February 1901.
There have been four time periods when 9 living current or former premiers co-existed. The first period was from the appointment of Henry Lefroy on 28 June 1917 to the death of John Forrest on 2 September 1918. The second period was from the appointment of James Mitchell on 17 May 1919 to the death of Henry Dalglish on 16 August 1920. The third and longest period was from the appointment of Philip Collier on 16 April 1924 to the death of Hector Rason on 15 March 1927. The fourth and most recent period has been ongoing since the appointment of Roger Cook on 8 June 2023.
If one includes future premiers as well as past and current premiers, there have been two time periods when 19 different premiers co-existed. (see Statistics)

Statistics[edit]
- Because he was the first premier, and the fact that there have been at least three premiers living since the appointment of George Leake on 27 May 1901, John Forrest is the only person to ever hold the distinction of being the only living premier (from 29 December 1890 to 15 February 1901).
- In addition, George Throssell (from 15 February 1901 to 27 May 1901) is the only other person to have been one of two or less living premiers.
- During four periods in the History of Western Australia has there been 9 living premiers. The first such period was from 28 June 1917 to 2 September 1918 (when John Forrest, Alf Morgans, Walter James, Henry Daglish, Hector Rason, Newton Moore, Frank Wilson, John Scaddan, and Henry Lefroy were alive). The second period was from 17 May 1919 to 16 August 1920 (when Alf Morgans, Walter James, Henry Daglish, Hector Rason, Newton Moore, John Scaddan, Henry Lefroy, Hal Colebatch, and James Mitchell were alive). The third period was from 16 April 1924 to 15 March 1927 (when Alf Morgans, Walter James, Hector Rason, Newton Moore, John Scaddan, Henry Lefroy, Hal Colebatch, James Mitchell, and Philip Collier were alive). The fourth and most recent period has been ongoing since 8 June 2023 (with Brian Burke, Peter Dowding, Carmen Lawrence, Richard Court, Geoff Gallop, Alan Carpenter, Colin Barnett, Mark McGowan, and Roger Cook as the living premiers).
- John Forrest was the only person to be both one of two or less living premiers (from 29 December 1890 to 27 May 1901) and one of the 9 living premiers (from 28 June 1917 to 2 September 1918).
- There have been 16 administrations during which a premier has not died, the most recent being the administration of Mark McGowan. This does not include the administration of George Leake (who was himself the only premier to die during his administration) nor the administration of the incumbent Roger Cook as no premier has died since Ray O'Connor who died during the administration of Colin Barnett.
- Conversely, only during the administration of Philip Collier has there been as many as four deaths during an administration. Only once (during the administration of Ross McLarty) has there been as many as three deaths during an administration.
- John Forrest holds the distinction of serving for the longest period without the death of premier during his term (10 years and 47 days).
- The longest period between deaths of premiers was the 16 years and 114 days days between the deaths of Ross McLarty on 22 December 1962 and David Brand on 15 April 1979. The shortest period was the 96 days between the deaths of John Forrest on 2 September 1918 and Frank Wilson on 7 December 1918.
- If the longest period between deaths is to be exceeded, no premier must die before 19 June 2029 (the current oldest and second oldest surviving premiers, Peter Dowding and Brian Burke, would then be 86 and 82 years old respectively).
- The second longest period is the 12 years and 63 days between the deaths of John Tonkin on 20 October 1995 and Charles Court on 22 December 2007.
- Only twice (in 1918 and 1986) have two premiers died in the same year.
- Following his administration's end in 1901, Alf Morgans lived to see a record 14 administrations prior to his death in August 1933. Walter James follows with 13 administrations after his own administration ended in 1904, prior to his death in January 1943. In modern times, the premier to have lived to see the most administrations following their own is Brian Burke, with 8 so far following the end of his administration in 1988.
- If one includes future as well as past and current premiers, the record sits at 19:
- Between John Tonkin's birth on 2 February 1902 and George Leake's death on 24 June 1902, the following premiers were alive: John Forrest, George Throssell, George Leake, Alf Morgans, Walter James, Henry Daglish, Hector Rason, Newton Moore, Frank Wilson, John Scaddan, Henry Lefroy, Hal Colebatch, James Mitchell, Philip Collier, John Willcock, Frank Wise, Ross McLarty, Albert Hawke, and John Tonkin.
- Between David Brand's birth on 1 August 1912 and John Forrest's death on 2 September 1918, the following premiers were alive: John Forrest, Alf Morgans, Walter James, Henry Daglish, Hector Rason, Newton Moore, Frank Wilson, John Scaddan, Henry Lefroy, Hal Colebatch, James Mitchell, Philip Collier, John Willcock, Frank Wise, Ross McLarty, Albert Hawke, David Brand, John Tonkin, and Charles Court.
- Since the appointment of John Tonkin on 3 March 1971 (a period of 53 years, 264 days), there have been at least four premiers living, and since the appointment of Peter Dowding on 25 February 1988 (a period of 36 years, 271 days), there have been at least five premiers living.

Not all premiers live to become the oldest of their time. Of the 22 deceased premiers, 12 eventually became the oldest of their time, while 10 did not. Frank Wise became the oldest living premier when Ross McLarty died in 1962 and remained so until his death in 1986, for a record 23 years and 189 days. Hal Colebatch became the oldest living premier when James Mitchell died in 1951, but he survived Mitchell by only 1 year and 201 days.
On one occasion the oldest living premier lost this distinction not by his death, but due to the appointment of a premier who was older. John Forrest lost this distinction when George Throssell was appointed, but when Throssell died in 1910, Forrest regained it again until his own death in 1918 for a total period of 18 years and 51 days. John Tonkin was the oldest to acquire this distinction at the age of 84 years, and 147 days. Albert Hawke, who was aged 85 years, and 73 days when he died, on 14 February 1986 was the oldest and most recent premier to die without ever acquiring this distinction.
