Timeline of living premiers[edit]
This is a chronological list of all who served as the Premier of Victoria and were still living, at different periods in history. There has been only one time period when there was only one living premier, beginning with the appointment of William Haines in November 1855 and ending with the appointment of John O'Shanassy in March 1857.
There have been four time periods when 10 living current or former premiers co-existed. The first and longest period was from the appointment of Bryan O'Loghlen on 7 September 1881 to the death of John O'Shanassy on 5 May 1883. The second period was from the appointment of James Patterson on 23 January 1893 to the death of James McCulloch on 31 January 1893. The third period was from the appointment of William Irvine on 12 June 1902 to the death of Charles Gavan Duffy on 9 February 1903. The fourth and most recent period was from the appointment of Stanley Argyle on 19 May 1932 to the death of William Murray McPherson on 26 July 1932.
If one includes future premiers as well as past and current premiers, there has been only one time period when 31 different premiers co-existed. (see Statistics)

Statistics[edit]
- Because he was the first premier, and the fact that there have been at least two premiers living since the appointment of John O'Shanassy on 11 March 1857, William Haines is the only person to ever hold the distinction of being the only living premier (from 30 November 1855 to 11 March 1857).
- In addition, John O'Shanassy (from 11 March 1857 to 27 October 1859 and 3 February 1866 to 6 May 1868), James McCulloch (from 3 February 1866 to 6 May 1868), John McDonald (from 30 July 1971 to 23 August 1972), Henry Bolte (from 30 July 1971 to 23 August 1972 and 23 April 1977 to 5 June 1981), and Rupert Hamer (from 23 April 1977 to 5 June 1981) are the only other persons to have been one of two or less living premiers.
- During four periods in the History of Victoria have there been 10 living premiers. The first such period was from 7 September 1881 to 5 May 1883 (when John O'Shanassy, James McCulloch, Charles Sladen, John Alexander MacPherson, Charles Gavan Duffy, James Francis, George Kerferd, Graham Berry, James Service, and Bryan O'Loghlen were alive). The second period was from 23 January 1893 to 31 January 1893 (when James McCulloch, John Alexander MacPherson, Charles Gavan Duffy, Graham Berry, James Service, Bryan O'Loghlen, Duncan Gillies, James Munro, William Shiels, and James Patterson were alive). The third period was from 12 June 1902 to 9 February 1903 (when Charles Gavan Duffy, Graham Berry, Bryan O'Loghlen, Duncan Gillies, James Munro, William Shiels, George Turner, Allan McLean, Alexander Peacock, and William Irvine were alive). The fourth and most recent period was from 19 May 1932 to 26 July 1932 (when Alexander Peacock, William Irvine, William Watt, John Bowser, Harry Lawson, George Prendergast, John Allan, Edmond Hogan, William Murray McPherson, and Stanley Argyle were alive). The longest period where there have been 10 living premiers was the 1 year and 240 days ending with the death of John O'Shanassy in May 1883.
- John O'Shanassy was the only person to be both one of two or less living premiers (from 11 March 1857 to 27 October 1859 and 3 February 1866 to 6 May 1868) and one of the 10 living premiers (from 7 September 1881 to 5 May 1883).
- There have been 27 administrations during which a premier has not died, the most recent being the administration of Denis Napthine. This does not include the administration of the incumbent Jacinta Allan as no premier has died since John Cain Jr. who died during the administration of Daniel Andrews.
- Conversely, only during the administration of Albert Dunstan has there been as many as five deaths during an administration. Only once (during the administration of Henry Bolte) has there been as many as four deaths during an administration.
- Jeff Kennett holds the distinction of serving for the longest period without the death of premier during his term (7 years and 14 days).
- The longest period between deaths of premiers was the 17 years and 91 days between the deaths of William Haines on 3 February 1866 and John O'Shanassy on 5 May 1883. The shortest period was the 28 days between the deaths of James Francis on 25 January 1884 and Charles Sladen on 22 February 1884.
- If the longest period between deaths is to be exceeded, no premier must die before 24 February 2037 (the current oldest and second oldest surviving premiers, Jeff Kennett and Denis Napthine, would then be 89 and 85 years old respectively).
- The second longest period was the 14 years and 79 days between the deaths of Henry Bolte on 4 January 1990 and Rupert Hamer on 23 March 2004.
- On six occasions (in 1884, 1903, 1904, 1916, 1936, and 1964) have two premiers died in the same year.
- Following his administration's end in 1872, Charles Gavan Duffy lived to see a record 18 administrations prior to his death in February 1903. William Irvine follows with 16 administrations after his own administration ended in 1904, prior to his death in August 1943. In modern times, the premier to have lived to see the most administrations following their own is Jeff Kennett, with 6 so far following the end of his administration in 1999.
- If one includes future as well as past and current premiers, the record sits at 31:
- Between Albert Dunstan's birth on 26 July 1882 and John O'Shanassy's death on 5 May 1883, the following premiers were alive: John O'Shanassy, James McCulloch, Charles Sladen, John Alexander MacPherson, Charles Gavan Duffy, James Francis, George Kerferd, Graham Berry, James Service, Bryan O'Loghlen, Duncan Gillies, James Munro, William Shiels, James Patterson, George Turner, Allan McLean, Alexander Peacock, William Irvine, Thomas Bent, John Murray, William Watt, George Elmslie, John Bowser, Harry Lawson, George Prendergast, John Allan, William Murray McPherson, Stanley Argyle, Albert Dunstan, John Cain Sr., and Ian Macfarlan.
- Since the appointment of Joan Kirner on 10 August 1990 (a period of 34 years, 104 days), there have been at least four premiers living, and since the death of William Murray McPherson on 26 July 1932 (a period of 92 years, 119 days), there have been no more than nine premiers living.
Oldest living premiers of Victoria[edit]
Not all premiers live to become the oldest of their time. Of the 42 deceased premiers, 23 eventually became the oldest of their time, while 19 did not. Charles Gavan Duffy became the oldest living premier when he was appointed in 1871 and remained so until his death in 1903 for a record 31 years and 235 days. George Turner became the oldest living premier when John Murray died in 1916, but he survived Murray by only 101 days.
On four occasions the oldest living premier lost this distinction not by his death, but due to the appointment of a premier who was older. John O'Shanassy lost this distinction when Charles Sladen was appointed. Sladen lost this distinction when Charles Gavan Duffy was appointed. William Irvine lost this distinction when John Bowser was appointed. Bowser lost this distinction when George Prendergast was appointed but when Prendergast died in 1937, Irvine regained it again until his own death in 1943 for a total period of 7 years and 100 days.
Graham Berry was the oldest to acquire this distinction at the age of 80 years and 165 days. Joan Kirner who was aged 76 years and 346 days when she died, on 1 June 2015 was the oldest and most recent premier to die without ever acquiring this distinction.
