Mahfooz Ansari (born 1949) is a management/business professor, researcher, and author. He is currently a Professor of International Management and Human Resources Management at the Dhillon School of Business of the University of Lethbridge. Before moving to Lethbridge, Canada in 2006, he held faculty positions at several other academic institutions, including the University Science Malaysia (2000-2006), the UIA International University Malaysia (1994-2000), the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (1981-1994), the University of Magadh (1971-1973 & 1975-1981), and A.N.S. Institute of Social Studies Patna (1973-1975).[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Ansari was born in a small village of Gaya district (now Aurangabad district), India. He attended High English School at Madanpur, Gaya. He received a Bachelors’s (honors) degree in psychology from Gaya College and master's and doctorate degrees in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of Kansas and the University of Patna, respectively.[1]

Career[edit]

Ansari started teaching at the University of Magadh (A. M. College) in 1971, then switched to the A.N.S. Institute of Social Studies Patna, two years later, in 1973.[1]

The same year, Ansari started teaching at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, where he stayed till 1994 when he was offered the opportunity to join the UIA International University Malaysia as a faculty member. Ansari then moved to teach at the University Science Malaysia in 2000, where he stayed until 2006.[1]

In 2006, Ansari joined the University of Lethbridge, Canada, as a Visiting Professor of International Management and Human Resources Management & Organizational Studies. He earned a full professorship at the university in 2009, where he is still teaching. Ansari chaired the HRM & OS department from 2009 to 2013 and International Management department from 2015 to 2018.[1]

Ansari also held visiting professorship position at several institutions, including the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, the King Abdul Aziz University Jeddah, the University of Malaya Malaysia, the University Institute of Technology MARA Malaysia, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the North-Eastern Regional Institute of Management Guwahati, and Karamanoglu Mehmetbey University Turkey.[1]

Ansari’s research, teaching, and consulting for over 40 years are about building effective exchange relationships. His program of research focuses on leadership and revolves around three inter-related streams of research: (a) The Power-Influence Approach to Leadership, (b) Leader-Member Exchange (LMX), and (c) the Cultural Context of Leadership and Social Influence.[1]

Ansari has authored papers in his field’s diverse outlets, including Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of International Business Studies, Human Relations, Journal of Business Ethics, Leadership & Organization Development Journal, Journal of Applied Social Psychology, and Journal of Social Psychology.[1]

His past and current editorial activities include serving on the editorial board of four journals, including the Journal of World Business, Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, Cross-cultural & Strategic Management, FWU Journal of Social Sciences, and Pakistan Journal of Psychological Research.[1]

Ansari has collaborated with researchers in more than 40 countries around the world, published over 90 refereed journal articles and book chapters, and has delivered over 80 keynotes and invited presentations and over 150 presentations at several professional meetings in the United States, Canada, India, Japan, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, Germany, Spain, Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Macau, Taiwan, Turkey, Switzerland, Norway, and Pakistan. He has supervised some 25 doctoral dissertations and about 60 master's theses.

Ansari is a member of the Academy of Management, Academy of International Business, American Psychological Association, and Society for Industrial & Organizational Psychology.[1]

Honors and awards[edit]

Ansari is a recipient of several awards from the Academy of Management, including Carolyn Dexter Best Paper Award in 2004, the Best Paper from an Under-represented Country Award in 2004, the Carolyn Dexter Best Paper Award Finalist in 2005, the Carolyn Dexter Best International Paper Award Finalist in 2006, and the selection of two papers as among the Best International Papers (2007, 2011). He is also a recipient of  an  Outstanding Paper Award at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence (2011).[1]
