Federated States of Micronesia–Spain relations are the bilateral and diplomatic relations between these two countries. Micronesia established diplomatic relations with Spain on May 11 of 1992. Spain does not have an embassy in Micronesian territory, but it has an ambassador from this country located in Manila, Philippines.[1]
Historical relations[edit]
The name of Micronesia means "small islands" in Greek. Spain baptized the archipelago with the name of the Caroline Islands - in honor of the Spanish king Carlos II - until the Germans arrived in 1885 and tried to impose a protectorate. The Spanish government protested and appealed to Holy See. The Treaty of Paris, in December 1898, ended the war between Spain and United States, in which Spain lost Guam , Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. For 25 million pesetas, Madrid sold the Carolinas archipelago to Germany after signing the German-Spanish Treaty (1899).[2]
Economic relations[edit]
Direct trade in Spain with the Federated States of Micronesia is very scarce.

Exports are mainly from machinery and boats. Export in euros: 246,738 (2008), 187,978 (2009), 83,972 (2010) and 240,635 (2011). Spain mainly imports fish and crustaceans Import in euros: 1,957 (2009), 8,141 (2010) 1,570 (2011). No investment data. The Spanish fishing fleet operates in waters of the EFM and in waters of the North Pacific, given the immense fishing resources (especially tuna) of its exclusive economic zone and bordering international waters of the Federated States of Micronesia.[3]
Cooperation[edit]
The last bilateral intervention in the field of cooperation dates back to 2002, when AECID granted a special grant of 50,000 euros to the Missionary Mercedaries of Berriz. This singular aid was used for the construction of a new building of the College of Our Lady of Mercy in Micronesia. Also in 2008, Spain contributed €3.4 million to a project to improve computer networks and to create a consortium of universities that favors the exchange of knowledge in the region of the Group of Small Island Developing States -Small Island Developing States (SIDS) -, of which the Federated States of Micronesia is a part.
In 2011, Spain provided financing of 30,000 euros to the Palau Ministry of Education for the organization of the meeting in November of that year in Koror of Directors of Education of the Member States of the Pacific Islands Forum for the development of a framework regional education, which was also attended by representatives of the Federated States of Micronesia.[4]
