History[edit]

MyTeam11 was founded by Vinit Godara and Sanjit Sihag in the year 2016 as a fantasy sports platform offering cricket only. The platform touched a 15 million+ users mark by the year 2020,[11] which made it the second biggest fantasy sports platform in India. In 2018 MyTeam11 launched Fantasy Football and Fantasy Kabaddi on the platform followed by the addition of Volleyball to its platter in 2019.[12] MyTeam11 registered itself as the Platinum member of Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS) towards the mid of 2019. During the initial months of 2020, MyTeam11 expanded its business beyond fantasy sports gaming with the introduction of MyTeamRummy – an online rummy gaming app[13] and SportsTiger – a multi sports news aggregator application.[14] The new offering received a wide spread popularity among people, making them both successful launches.

Apart from the introduction of two major projects, MyTeam11 outgrew its fantasy gaming range with the introduction of baseball, handball, rugby, and US football taking the total count of sports offered to 10. With the introduction of fantasy rugby, MyTeam11 became the first ever fantasy sports platform to introduce the sport among the Indian audience.[15]

MyTeam11 additionally became the first ever fantasy sports platform to introduce Quiz contests for sports users as a part of their innovative user-engagement approach during the COVID-19 pandemic. [2]

Legality and laws[edit]

Majority of the Indian states and laws consider fantasy sports to be a game of skill and not betting or gambling. Under ‘The Public Gambling Act, 1867,’ the act shall not be applicable to sports that are dominated by mere skills; thus, holding fantasy sports free from its boundaries and legal in India. In another case, a bench of Punjab and Haryana High Court in the judgment of one of its case of the year 2017, Varun Gumber v. Union Territory of Chandigarh ruled out that fantasy sports do not account to gambling.[16] Services offered on MyTeam11 are in alignment with the laws ruling the governance of fantasy sports in India alongside banning its services in the states of Sikkim, Odisha, Assam, Telangana, Nagaland, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu that offer no clearance about the offering of fantasy sports.[17]

Partnerships[edit]

In the year 2017, MyTeam11 partnered with Karnataka Premier League as the “Official Fantasy Partners” of the game. The deal was bagged by MyTeam11 in the following year too, making the collaboration a two-year deal. In 2018 MyTeam11 announced 2 different partnerships within cricket & kabaddi leagues. MyTeam11 collaborated as the ‘Broadcast Co-Presenting Sponsors’ with Bangladesh Premier League and as the ‘Official Fantasy Partner’ with RuPay Pro Volleyball League.[18][19] In 2018, MyTeam11 partnered with DD Sports, D Sports, and Star Sports as ‘Broadcasting Partners.’ In the same year, MyTeam11 announced a partnership with around 25 TV channels for its TVC campaigns.[20] In the beginning of the year 2019, MyTeam11 announced itself as the “Official Fantasy Partner” for iB Cricket Super Over League, a first ever virtual reality cricket series. In 2019, MyTeam11 became the first ever fantasy sports platform to Title Sponsor an international tournament by becoming the Title Sponsors of India Tour to West Indies 2019, signing a deal with Cricket West Indies.[21][22]

The teams are awarded points on the basis of the real-time performance of selected players & ranks are given to the users, based on the ranks the users are awarded prize money.[23]
