scientist, scholar, writer and professor from Kerala prominently contributing to performance art and related social activities. His works on the renaissance of theatre, drama, dance and music has built a stable foundation for the art forms in the society, especially through Soorya Festival conducted by Soorya Movement, a marathon art festival celebrated annually, based in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
Soorya Krishnamoorthy founded Soorya Movement in 1977. Soorya Movement is the largest cultural organisation of the world with its chapters in 38 countries and 60 centres in India. Apart from an activist in art culture, he has also published 5 books, 3 screenplays and 15 dramas and several articles in national and international journals.
Family & Personal Life[edit]
Soorya Krishnamoorthy was born on 11th April, in Kottayam, Kerala in a family of renowned engineers, from the former Travancore State. His father T. Nataraja Pillai was the chief engineer of Kerala State and mother C. Saraswathi Amma, was an active member of Gandhi Peace Foundation.
Soorya Krishnamoorthy completed his senior secondary education from Model High School, Thiruvananthapuram in 1965. He did his pre-degree in Government Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram in 1967 and graduated with Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from TKM College of Engineering, Kollam in 1971.
While in college studying pre-degree, he became the secretary general of the college union and won with a record majority of votes in Kerala University and the record is still unbroken. He also has represented Kerala State and Kerala University for Badminton.
Soorya Krishnamoorthy is married to Raji and has two children, Sita working in All India Civil Service and Lakshman working in San Jose, USA.
Professional Career[edit]
Soorya Krishnamoorthy joined Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) as a scientist/engineer in 1972 and worked under Bharat Ratna Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who later became the president of India. And also, he has worked under C.R. Sathya, Padmashri M.R. Kurup, Dr. V.R. Gowarikar, Padmashri S. Srinivasan and more for a period of 27 years.
In 1999, Krishnamoorthy availed a voluntary retirement from ISRO to concentrate more on cultural activities.
Contributions To Art & Culture[edit]
Soorya Krishnamoorthy has made several uncountable contributions to Indian art culture. He is an artist and reformed who dedicated his entire life for the welfare of art, culture and related societies and personnel. Soorya Krishnamoorthy is selected as one of the 101 World Renowned Living Keralites who have contributed the most in the last millennium by Government of Kerala and awarded with Kerala Pratibha Pranam Award. He is also, one of the 10 living legends of Kerala in the last millennium selected by Kerala Kaumudi Readership Survey and one of the 134 living Keralites for the overall contribution in Art Culture by Asianet Survey.
Soorya Krishnamoorthy is the creator of a new Theatrical art form, ‘Theatre of Freedom’ and the first Realistic Drama Series in Indian Theatre, ‘Chaayakada Kadhakal’. He conceived, designed and directed 105 stage shows (over 5,000 stages) in 43 years and this could be a record unbroken yet.
He converted his own house to an air conditioned, gallery-seated black-box theatre of 500 seats and a cultural complex with an Art Gallery, Guest house, Rehearsal space, Lecture Halls given free of all charges to artists.
Soorya Krishnamoorthy has adorned the positions; Chairman, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademy for 5 years, Dean and Chairman of Board of Studies in University of Calicut for 5 years, Festival Director of International Theatre Festival of Kerala (ITFOK) for 5 years, Vice Chairman of Kerala State Chalachitra Akademy for 3 years and Director of Kerala State film Development Corporation.
For 43 years, he has a committed service in propagating, promoting, presenting and preserving Indian Culture.
It is Soorya Krishnamoorthy who conceptualised and initiated International Film Festival of Kerala, Tourism Week Celebrations of Kerala, Nishagandhi Festival of Kerala and Malabar Mahotsavam – Kozhikode
Soorya Krishnamoorthy has become member of National and State Film Award Jury several times. He has created a short film by 40 eminent artists of India. He has also worked as member of Doordarshan Advisory Board, NFDC Script Committee and member of Core Committee to frame Cultural Policy of the Government.

- Brought Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala into the Cultural and Film Map of India, through various cultural and film festivals. The 111-daylong Soorya India Festival is a major festival of the world today. Thiruvananthapuram transforms into the Cultural Capital of India during this event.
- Conceptualized and started the Tourism Week Celebrations for the Govt. of Kerala in 1980. The celebrations have continued every year in the same design till date.
- Conceived, initiated and convened Nishagandhi Dance Festival for Department of Tourism, Kerala.
- Started the International Film Festival under the banner of KSFDC which has evolved into the present IFFK.

- For the first time in India, Mediclaim (Rs 1 Lac per artist per year) insurance coverage with interim relief during illness (Rs 1,000 per week per artist up to 100 weeks) and life insurance (2 Lac to family) was introduced to all artists of Kerala.
- First cultural complex in Kerala with 11 theatres, Artiste’s Hostel, Media Centre, food court, and rehearsal space was incepted in Trissur.
- For the first time in India, introduced subsidy (Rs 1 Lac) to theatre productions as well as to other art forms.
- For the first time in India, started Pravasi wing of Akademy and started honouring diaspora artists with awards & other benefits.
- Constructed the first black box theatre of Kerala.
- For the first time in the 135-year-old history, efforts were successfully taken which made the Government acknowledge circus personnel as artists, following which awards and other benefits were distributed to them.
- 100 sub centres of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademy, were formed and almost 2000 yearly programmes were organized with full payment to artists through these centres.

- Directed Veluthampi Dalava, a show on the epic life of the valorous freedom fighter of Kerala.
- Written and directed Neelavelichem, based on the story by the legendary writer, Vaikom Mohammed Basheer.
- Directed Stree Parvam, on the atrocities against Indian Women.
- Written and directed Deepasikha, on the life and plight of a genuine artist.
- Written and directed Anjali, on the 4th battalion (WLI) of the Madras Regiment, Indian Army participating over 400 soldiers as artists.
- Directed Sooryakanthi, on the Flowers of Kerala.
- Written and directed Thudakkam, an attempt to probe into the mind of a writer through his characters. It is also a tribute to his Manasa Guru: Shri, M.T. Vasudevan Nair.

Charity Works[edit]
Soorya Krishnamoorthi is the pioneer of several welfare schemes, many of which were the first of its kind in India, conceived to benefit the poor artists of the state.
For Artists[edit]
- Gurupooja: Every year one veteran artist who is economically backward and inactive due to old age, is given Gurudakshina to cover the expense for food, medicine and shelter for the rest of his life. So far, this ongoing project has provided Gurudakshina to over 35 artistes.
- Adoption: Eight Theatre artistes, who are ambitious of sticking to theatre, but unable to make a living are adopted and encouraged to present plays, receiving a Monthly Salary, Medical help, etc. This is also an ongoing project.
Health[edit]
- One dialysis a day: In association with Shree Foundation and NIMS Hospital, everyday one dialysis is given to a poor patient. This is an ongoing project.
- Art for heart: Helping the poor heart patients to get surgery free of cost, supported by Harvey Heart Foundation, Chennai. The project is ongoing.
Education[edit]
Soorya Krishnamoorthy conducted the marriage of own daughter Sita in a simple manner without any gold glitter, glamour and pomp. Instead, the money which has been reserved for marriage was given to educate 25 students for 4 years. (The simplicity of the marriage and the gesture of using money for educating the needy won Kerala Legislative Assembly’s appreciation)
