Spotlight Animation Studios was an American visual effects and computer animation studio based in East Hartford, Connecticut. It was founded on February 12, 2025, by Chris Wedge, Chris Meledandri, Robert Simonds and Bill McGlashan, Connecticut the Greenwich branch was originally Blue Sky Studios.
History[edit]
In February 2025, it was reported that Robert Simonds and Bill McGlashan was nearing a deal to the Spotlight Animation label under 20th Century Studios for the first time in over a decade. In May 2025, Spotlight Animation Studios hired former Illumination and DreamWorks Animation CCO Chris Meledandri. In July 2024, Gina Shay, producer of Toyland, is now hired as Head of Production at Spotlight Animation Studios and will oversee production planning for the studio's slate of films.
Spotlight Animation Studios signed on directors Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4 and Transformers One) to direct Toyland, Kevin Asbury to direct The Little Beauty King, Chris Miller (Shrek the Third, Puss in Boots and The Smurfs Movie) to direct Larrikins, Tom McGrath (Madagascar, Megamind and The Boss Baby) to direct Zodiac and Nicholas Stoller and Doug Sweetland (Storks) to directors Penguin of Ipanema.
Production logo[edit]
With the release of Toyland in March 2026, Spotlight Animation's logo revealed their first logo it represents their full logo was released and shows the Scrat which are the mascots of the studio launched from their around to form the studio's logo with himself then appears in the distance, hops to the acorn and embraces it. Suddenly, the surface tips to the right. Scrat runs to the left and closer to the screen, causing the surface to tip towards the left, becoming increasingly vertical. Scrat panics and scrambles in vain to tip the surface back to the right, but ends up clinging to the vertical surface while his acorn falls off-screen. The camera then zooms out to reveal the vertical surface as the left side of the "S" in "SPOTLIGHT" (in a similar gotham black font as before), with "ANIMATION STUDIOS" (in Neutraface) below. Scrat then loses his grip on the "S" and bonks off the left corner before falling off. A drop shadow fades in behind the text, and then the screen, it was animated by DNEG Animation and their head of animation Chris Meledandri.
Process[edit]
In a similar fashion to Paramount Animation, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, Sony Pictures Animation and Illumination, Spotlight Animation Studios the studio outsources their animated films to different animation and visual effects studios, with the majority of their films being animated in-house by the main Blue Sky Studios in Greenwich, Connecticut. Spotlight Animation Studios outsources their feature films to other animation studios such as DNEG Animation.
