Sree Kumaramangalam Public School (often informally referred to simply as SKM Public School, Kumarakom) was established in 2003 by Sree Kumaramangalam Education & Cultural Society (Reg. no: K205/2007) on behalf of Sree Kumaramangalam Subramanyaswamy Temple which belongs to the Sree Kumaramangalam Devaswom.[1][2] It is an English medium co-educational institution recognized by Central Board of Secondary Education.[3] The school is located in the heart of Kumarakom,and 1 km away from Kumarakom Boat Jetty near Apsara Junction in the state of Kerala, India.[4]

It is said that during Sree Narayana Guru’s visit to Kumarakom in 1903, he expressed a wish to set up a school there. In accordance with his wishes, the Ezhavas, organized under the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP), started the Sree Kumaramangalam School.[9]

Administration[edit]

The manager together with the principal, administrator and the trustees of Sree Kumaramangalam Devasom manages the day-to-day running of the school. The academic head is the Principal. The current principal is Mrs. Samithamol S.

Admission policies[edit]

SKM Public School currently offers education for students from kindergarten to tenth standard. There will not be any test or interview for admission to KG classes. For admission to KG, a child must have completed 3 ½ years of age for LKG, 4 ½ years of age for UKG, 5 ½ years of age for class I on 1st June of the academic year in which admission is sought. From class I onwards, students are selected based on an entrance examination.[10]

AISSE[edit]

SKM School had its first batch of students attending the AISSE examination of CBSE in 2012. Initially the school provided only primary and Upper Primary Education.

House system[edit]

Students of Grades 5 to 10 are sorted into one of four houses. Inter-house competitions are held regularly and the best house is adjudged at the end of the academic year. House prefects who are elected by the house members from Grades 9 to 12.

The four houses are:

     Arjuna
     Amrita
     Abhaya
     Ashoka

Each house is headed by two house captains and a teacher known as the 'house co-ordinator'.[11]

Cultural activities and Sports[edit]

Apart from academic activities, the school also provide training in co-curricular activities. The school imparts training in vocal music, dance, painting and crafts. Students' literary Association is held every week to provide opportunity to develop hidden talents of the students. The school participates in the CBSE youth festivals held under the banner of Sahodaya Association.[12]

The Physical Education Department also organizes various outdoor programs. Various clubs like Nature club, Science club, Social science club, Arts club etc. are being organized and conducts debates, exhibitions, quizzes and study tours.

The school celebrates important days and festivals, like Onam, Independence Day and Christmas. The day is marked by an address by an eminent personality, followed by cultural events. The school celebrates Teachers Day[13], with the older students taking over the teaching of the younger classes. Other important days in an academic year include Literary Association Inauguration, School Day celebration, Sports Day, Arts Festival etc.

Facilities[edit]

The school building is three storied with lawns, landscaped gardens and playgrounds. The school premises house 21,246 square feet (1,973.8 m2) of teaching space containing classrooms and laboratories.[14]

There are various Science labs, Computer lab, Language lab, library and Guidance and Counseling wings.[15] The school ground (4,000 square feet (370 m2) ) has facilities for Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Shuttle, Badminton, Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put etc.
