Krutika Singh, more well known as TheMermaidScales, is an Indian YouTuber, content creator, social media influencer and former TikToker. As of 2023, she has 7 million followers on Instagram.[1] and over 9 million subscribers on YouTube[2]
Career[edit]
Krutika's career began with her TikTok account where she, at first, only posted pictures of her outfits,[3] but soon uploaded lip sync videos and short comedy sketches which quickly gained fame due to their relatability. Following the 2020 ban of TikTok in India, she began posting reels on Instagram[4] and by August 2021, 'TheMermaidscales' had acquired over 3 million followers. As of 2023, she has more than 7 million followers on Instagram[1] and is one of the biggest Indian social media personalities.[5]
YouTube[edit]
Her first and more popular channel "TheMermaidscales" was created on 3 August 2017 and on 24 May 2018, Krutika dropped her first video titled "Edgy Fashion". Her most popular video, "Nobody understands doctor's handwriting" was released on 13 August 2020 and has over 6 million views. On 3 January 2021, she opened her second YouTube account- "mermaidchan", consisting mainly of gaming videos.
Style[edit]
TheMermaidscales is known for her distinct black winged eyeliner look[6] which is frequently dubbed "cute" and "quirky"[5][7]. She often cosplays fictional Anime characters including Hisoka from Hunter x Hunter, Runa (from Kakegurui) and Toge Inumaki (from Jujutsu Kaisen) which she did for Vogue India.[6] In 2022, she won two Parcos Beauty Influencer Awards held by Elle India for Female Influencer of the Year and Exemplary Makeup Influencer.[8]
Family[edit]
On 5 December 1998, Krutika was born into a Hindu family in Maharashtra, India.[9] She has a sister, often mentioned in her videos, who has a YouTube channel known as "icedicey". Krutika's family has always been supportive of her career and are her "loudest cheerleaders".[6]
