"White Dress" is a song by American rapper and producer Kanye West. It was produced by West, RZA and Boogz & Tapez.[1]
Background
Producer RZA revealed that he was the one who wanted West to write a song for The Man with the Iron Fists (2012) and RZA showed him a scene, which West loved and it made him want to create the track.[2] It was revealed by RZA himself that he was impressed with West's rapping on the song.[3]
Composition and lyrics
A sample of 1972 single "I Could Never Be Happy" by The Emotions is used throughout "White Dress".[4] The background vocals "Just me and you girl... Woaaahhhhhh" are sampled from 2012 song "All the Way Gone" by The Game featuring Mario and Wale.[5]
The line "You like piña coladas, getting caught in the rain" is a reference by West to Rupert Holmes' 1979 single "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)".[6]
Release
A snippet was leaked of the track on October 10, 2012.[7] On October 12, the song was officially made available to be listened to online, which marked West's first release of music since GOOD Music album Cruel Summer and was made available for digital download when the featuring soundtrack album was released on October 22, 2012.[8][9]
An alternative version of it was shared by RZA on November 14, 2012.[10]
Song analysis
When rapping in "White Dress", West addresses his relationship with future wife Kim Kardashian, since the track was released in the same year that they started dating.[11] Coincidentally, she wore a white dress at their wedding in 2014.[12]
Critical reception
Pitchfork described the song as being: 'a striking, for-the-love track featuring a RZA-helmed (rather than RZA-inspired) soul beat' and wrote of its appearance on the soundtrack that:'West doesn't go out of his way to steal the show, for once. But the funny thing is, it happens anyway.'.[13] In comparison to his work from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, SheKnows viewed the track as showing a different side to West 'where he channels his emotions and reveals his vulnerabilities — without trailing off into profanity or vulgarity'.[14]
