Abd Al-Rahman Rabah Al-Kayyali (Arabic:عبد الرحمن رباح الكيالي) (b. 1916 - d. 1998) was a Palestinian academic, literary historian and poet. Al-Kayyali attended primary school in Al-Ramla and secondary school in Jaffa. His high school was in Al-Ramla, whereupon he joined the Cairo Secondary Institute from 1928 until 1931. He stayed in Egypt to pursue higher education and graduated from the Faculty of Dar al-Ulum - Cairo University in 1936. He graduated from Algeria University in 1970, earning a PhD in modern Arabic literature in 1973. He published his poems in a number of Arabic-language newspapers in Egypt (Al-Ahraam), Lebanon (Al-Adaab), and Palestine (Al-liwaa). However, Alkyyali never put his own poems into a collection. From 1935-1936, he conducted studies in the history of Arabic literature and Palestinian poetry, and also wrote articles and delivered lectures on literary criticism in Jaffa. [1][2][3][4]

Biography[edit]

Abd al-Rahman Rabah al-Kayyali was born and raised in Al-Ramla town, Jaffa district, in the Ottoman Mutasarrifate of Jerusalem in 1916 AD / 1334 AH. He studied primary and middle school in Jaffa in 1928, then attended high school in Al-Ramla, completing his high school at the Cairo Secondary Institute during 1929-1931. He studied at Al-Azhar University for four years and obtained a BA in the Arabic Language and Islamic Studies from the Faculty of Dar al-Ulum at Cairo University in 1936. Later, he went to Algeria and obtained a higher diploma in literary studies from the University of Algiers in 1970, and a doctorate in literature Modern Arabic from that university in 1973.[3]He taught in Jerusalem and Hebron, the mandate Palestine. He was appointed as a judge in Jaffa, and was a deputy chief judge under Jerusalem's jurisdiction from 1947 to 1948, yet did not carry out his duties owing to the Nakba (Setback), i.e., the Palestinian exodus.  

After 1948 he immigrated to Iraq and continued to teach in Baghdad. He later returned to his homeland and taught at various institutions including the Rashidiya School in Jerusalem, Birzeit University in Birzeit, and  Al-Hussein College in Amman. He also joined the Teachers’ Institute in Huwwarah, Irbid, Jordan, where later he was appointed as the principal and the inspector of the institute.[3]

He was appointed as a cultural advisor to Jordan in Algeria, and during his stay finished his doctorate in 1973. After retirement he  taught at the new University of Constantine at that time, and stayed in Algeria for 15 years until the late 1980s.[3]

Abd al-Rahman Rabah Al-Kayyali died in 1998 AD / 1418 AH, Amman, Jordan.
