Mar James Kalacherry

On recognizing the need for education for girls, James Kalacherry laid the foundation stone for the women’s wing of St. Berchmans College on 12 August 1949, establishing a separate division for women in St. Berchmans College facilitating University education for women in Kerala. It was then affiliated to University of Travancore in 1950. Later in 1955, the college was de-annexed from SB College Changanasserry under the leadership of Archbishop Mathew Kavukattu and given the name Assumption College Changanasserry, dedicating it to the Assumption of Mary. It was a women’s college until 2023. Today it is co-educational and affiliated to MG University Kottayam.
