Battle of Orikhiv
The battle of Orikhiv is an ongoing military engagement between Russian and Ukrainian forces that began on 8 March as part of the southern Ukraine campaign of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Background
In the first days of the invasion, Russian forces were able to take over many towns in the south, including the cities of Melitopol,[2] Berdiansk[3] and Enerhodar.[4]
Orikhiv and villages around it were subjected to strong artillery and aerial attacks, but Russian forces were not able to capture it.[5] On May 7, Ukrainian sources claimed that Russians shelled a hospital in the city.[6] After that came numerous reports of Russian shelling taking a heavy toll on the city, destroying its gymnasium and city council (located in a XIX century mansion) on May 21.[7][8] On 25 October, the deputy mayor of the city claimed 70% of it had been destroyed.[9]
Battle
Geolocated footage released on 27 March 2023 indicated Russian forces captured Piatykhatky.[10][full citation needed] On April 4, it was revealed Russian forces captured Kamianske up to the Yanchorak river and on April 5 Nesterianka.[11][full citation needed][12][full citation needed]
In the light of the 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive, Ukrainian forces launched attacks in the Orikhiv direction. On June 8, Ukrainian forces went on the offensive south of Mala Tokmacha, but Russian sources claimed they repelled the attack and recaptured lost positions. On the next day, Ukrainian forces advanced into Lobkove and towards Robotyne.[14][full citation needed] In the next three days, the Russian troops managed to repel the Russian forces about 5 km to the south, and on June 11, the Russian forces retreated another 4 km to the south towards the town of Robotyne, where they formed a strong line of defense in the following weeks. Over the next two months, Ukrainian troops gradually reached the target of Robotyne 18km south, attacking the town on the Russian front line of defense.[15][full citation needed][16][full citation needed][17][full citation needed]
