Depths of Wikipedia (@depthsofwikipedia) is a viral Instagram account dedicated to highlighting strange, obscure, and interesting corners of Wikipedia.[1] The account was created in 2020 by Annie Rauwerda, a 21-year-old neuroscience major at the University of Michigan,[2][3] and has since amassed over 244,000 followers, including Neil Gaiman, John Mayer, Troye Sivan, and Olivia Wilde.[4][5] Following her Instagram's viral success, Rauwerda created a sister TikTok and Twitter account of the same name, as well as launching a newsletter covering unusual Wikipedia pages in greater detail.[6]
The account has highlighted articles including buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo, sexy prime, chess on a really big board, a list of sexually active popes[4], and polar bear jail.[7]
Rauwerda has leveraged her account's virality to increase awareness of Wikipedia editing though a Wikipedia editing workshop on January 2021, which resulted in edits which have been viewed over 500,000 times.[2]
