Life and career

Shyamal Gupta was born in 1922 in Calcutta, into a family with a chemical business. He passed out from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata in 1945 with a B. But he left his job after three and a half years to pursue his hobby of writing full time and returned to Calcutta.

He recorded his first three songs for HMV which were sung by singer Jaganmoy Mitra in 1948. His first film songs were for the 1949 Bengali movie Abhimaan, whose music was by director Ramchandra Pal. Noted songs he penned were Aami chole gele pashaner bukey sung by Satinath Mukhopadhyay, Aami aato je tomay bhalobesechi sung by Manabendra Mukhopadhyay, Jhara pata jhorke daake by wife Sandhya Mukherjee, etc.
