Shyamal Gupta (Bengali: শ্যামল গুপ্ত; 3 December 1922 – 28 July 2010) was a noted Bengali lyricist and writer. He penned the lyrics for songs of many Bengali films and non-film songs.[1][2][3][4]
Life and career
Shyamal Gupta was born in 1922 in Calcutta, into a family with a chemical business. He passed out from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata in 1945 with a B. Sc. in Chemistry and joined the Ammunition Factory in Pune for Government of India as a chemist. But he left his job after three and a half years to pursue his hobby of writing full time and returned to Calcutta.
He married singer Sandhya Mukherjee. Their marriage faced challenges because of caste differences. He went on to pen lyrics of many Bengali films and non-film songs. His most notable song Aami aato je tomay bhalobesechi was written for his wife.
He recorded his first three songs for HMV which were sung by singer Jaganmoy Mitra in 1948. His first film songs were for the 1949 Bengali movie Abhimaan, whose music was by director Ramchandra Pal. Noted songs he penned were Aami chole gele pashaner bukey sung by Satinath Mukhopadhyay, Aami aato je tomay bhalobesechi sung by Manabendra Mukhopadhyay, Jhara pata jhorke daake by wife Sandhya Mukherjee, etc.
He died on 28 July 2010, at the age of 88, after suffering from bronchitis, at his residence in Kolkata. He was survived by his wife Sandhya Mukherjee and their daughter Soumi Sengupta.
