Abdus Sobhan Rahat Ali High School (Bengali: আবদুস সোবহান রাহাত আলী উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়) (alternatively spelled A S Rahat Ali School) is one of the renowned colleges of Bangladesh located in Patiya, Chittagong, Bangladesh. Initially, it was established as a 'Religious Institute', later it was upgraded to a 'Higher English School'. An educationalist and social worker named Maulana Abdus Sobhan founded the school for Islamic students on the eve of British rule. Today children of all religions and tribes study at the high school.

History[edit]

The school was established in 1914 by Maulana Abdus Sobhan, a devotee of education, at a distance of zero kilometers from Patyia Sadar, Chittagong. It was first established as a religious maktab (institute). When the miscreants set fire to the maktab, Maulana Abdus Sobhan went to the Patyia police station near the institute and talked to Inspector Rahat Ali about it. He expressed his concern over the education of Muslim boys. Hearing this, Inspector Rahat Ali explained to Maulana Abdus Sobhan the importance of establishing a modern English school instead of a maktab considering the progress of the Muslims of that time; When Maulana informed about the financial incapacity for the establishment of English school, Inspector Rahat Ali immediately paid 1000 rupees (Taka) in cash. Later it was upgraded as a high English school. In 1917, at the request of Maulana Abdus Sobhan, school management committee included Inspector Rahat Ali's name as its founder. Since then the school has been known as 'Abdus Sobhan Rahat Ali High School'.
