Abdus Sobhan Rahat Ali High School is a secondary school established in the zero point of Patiya City, Patiya, Chittagong in 1914.
Abdus Sobhan Rahat Ali High School was established in the zero point of Patiya City, Patiya, Chittagong in 1914. Initially, it was established as a 'Religious Institute', later it was upgraded to a 'Higher English School'. An educationalist and social worker named Mawlana Abdus Sobhan founded the school for Islamic students on the eve of British rule. Today children of all religions and tribes study at the high school.
History of founding
It is astonishing and a matter of research to historians as to why Mawlana Abdus Sobhan in the midst of financial difficulties, in the remote village by gave up all his tastes to build the Abdus Sobhan Rahat Ali High School. In order to find the answer of this question, we have to consider the socio-political context of the then subcontinent.
Due to the devastating defeat in the war of 'Palashi' Battle of Plassey in 1757, the position of Muslims deteriorated in such a way that living independently became very challenging in the subcontinent, especially in Bangladesh (Ex East Pakistan). Against this backdrop, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, Nawab Abdul Latif, Barrister Syed Ameer Ali সৈয়দ আমীর আলী, Nawab Mohsin Mulk Mohsin-ul-Mulk, Maniruzzaman Islamabadi and Master Kazem Ali কাজেম আলী became known as the champions of the Muslims in this subcontinent. All of these scholars believed that the only way to recover the lost valor and glory of the Muslim nation was to introduce them to modern education.
Though Mawlana Abdus Sobhan had not met with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, he followed his prophecy. Like others, he also believed that there was no easy alternative for the Muslims to overcome their weakness without modern education.
Another school had been established in Greater Patiya in the 1840s. Mawlana Abdus Sobhan felt the necessity to establish another school at the same place. At that time there was no modern educational institution for Muslims, as they were not allowed to attend this other school. For this reason, Mawlana Abdus Sobhan established his 'Sobhania Maktab' (small institute). It is said that Mawlana Abdus Sobhan's established Maktab was set on fire at night by unspecified people. After this incident Mawlana Abdus Sobhan went to the police station near the Maktab and informed to the local Inspector Mr. Rahat Ali about the incident. The inspector advised him to establish a modern English school in the place of the Maktab. When Mawlana Abdus Sobhan reported about financial hardship, Inspector Rahat Ali instantly provided thousand rupees (taka) to help to establish the 'Abdus Sobhan English High School'. It is believed that Rahat Ali's house was located in Fatikchhari Upazila of Chittagong, and he was the centenary of the school.
In 1917, Inspector Rahat Ali was transferred from Patiya Police Station and was named a co-founder of the school. In 1918, Mawlana Abdus Sobhan passed away, and the school was named 'Abdus Sobhan Rahat Ali High School'.
