Criston Palace are a fictional football team that appeared in the We are United strip of British comic Champ (1984-86). The club’s name was a direct reference to Crystal Palace FC. It was also simply known as ‘’Palace’’.
History
Criston Palace were newcomers to the Football League (4 top divisions of English football) as they were elected to the Fourth Division in 1976. As of 1984 the club was on its way up. Palace had a spectacular giant-killing feat in 1972 when they knocked out two Second division clubs in the FA Cup before falling to Southport in the 5th round. In 1983 Palace signed vastly-experienced central defender Bob Greenock from Melchester United.
The 83/84 season saw them in the second division against Chelbridge, Shepton, Riverton United and other rivals. Around March 1984 they were fourth bottom, 10 points adrift of Portland City FC. However, Portland City climbed up the table and finished 6th at the end, which means that Palace might have been relegated in 83/84.
