The Draft Ukrainian orthography of 2008 (Ukrainian: Проєкт українського правопису 2008 року, romanized: Proiekt ukrainskoho pravopysu 2008 roku) is a project of Ukrainian orthography developed by a well-known linguist, literary critic, translator, pedagogue Ivan Yushchuk, who is the author of about two dozen textbooks, manuals and reference books on modern Ukrainian for schools and universities. The text of the project was published by a private publisher in the author's edition for discussion.[1]

In his introductory speech, Ivan Yushchuk lists inaccuracies, incomprehensible formulations, typographical errors in the current orthography and offers his options for solving problems. In particular, the author of the project joins the proposals of the Draft Ukrainian orthography of 1999 in the paragraphs on intervocalic sound (варіянт and проєкт), proposes to cancel nouns on -о (кіна, метра), write "пів" separately, extend the "rule of nine" to all foreign proper names (gives an example: Арістотель to write as Аристотель), suggests putting an apostrophe after the labial, and so on.

Draft proposals[edit]

Ivan Yushchuk's orthography draft suggestions (pp. 5-6):

  1. Use the letter ґ in Ukrainian and foreign names and surnames, but not in geographical names: Геґель, but Гібралтар.
  2. Keep the doubling of letters only in foreign names, but not in geographical names: Шиллер, but Брюсель, Апеніни.
  3. According to the pronunciation do not double the letters in the words тона, нето, бруто, мула, мото.
  4. According to Ukrainian orthoepy, write Горкий without a soft sign.
  5. According to the Ukrainian pronunciation to put an apostrophe in words like б'юро, г'яур, б'язь, Б'ялий, as well as in the case when the lip is after any sonorous, not only after р: черв'як, мавп'ячий, Гельм'язів, комп'ютер, інтерв'ю.
  6. The rule of nine applies to all foreign words, and to proper names too: Дидро, Аристотель.
  7. Declension the nouns кіно, метро, б'юро, like a coat.
  8. "Пів" in the sense of half to write separately (distinguish: вітер з півдня and минуло пів дня).[2]
  9. Write a project as a траєкторія, об'єкт, суб'єкт, ін'єкція etc.
  10. Put a soft sign, as a special letter, at the end of the alphabet again as in the Ukrainian orthography of 1928.
  11. The word священник write with two нн.
  12. The particle "аби" should be written through a hyphen: аби-який, аби-що, аби-хто, аби-коли і окремо: не аби-який, не аби-що, не аби-хто, як будь-який, будь-що, не будь-який, не будь-що, не будь-хто.
  13. From "all-everywhere" to write through a hyphen, as from "long ago".
  14. The suffix -єв in Russian surnames should also be written after р, as it was once and as it is still written: Писарєв, Андрєєв; in Ukrainian in this suffix we write е — and not only after р: Пономарева, Стасева.
  15. According to the Ukrainian orthoepy, after the labials to write not ьо, but йо: Алфйоров, not Алфьоров, as Соловйов, Воробйов.
  16. At the end of the Serbian suffix -ац soft sign do not write: Сремац, Пожаревац, Крагуєвац.
  17. The noun хабар is canceled according to the pattern of a soft group (like a календар, каламар), хабаря, хабарем , etc.
  18. The words фоє, Гаваї, etc. should be written without the extra letter й (that is, do not use the letter й before я, ю, є, ї).
  19. Write торгівельний, as будівельний, заготівельний.
  20. The conjunction "тим часом як" is written in the same way as the adverb "тим часом".
  21. The concept of "author's punctuation mark" is introduced.
  22. A comma between the main and subordinate clauses is placed even when at the beginning of the subjunctive is the particle "не" or "і".
  23. In the separated members of the sentence, insert the insert words, as everywhere.

The project did not become a valid orthography.
