Production[edit]

Development[edit]

Following the release of Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014), Paramount Pictures tasked Akiva Goldsman in March 2015 to work with Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura in setting up a "writer's room" to create a "Transformers Cinematic Universe".[1] After setting up the writer's room, multiple writers were hired to write future installments in the franchise. According to Goldsman, the team would look at various Transformers media created by Hasbro for inspiration; if finding one that interested them, they could submit a treatment which would then be further developed by the whole team.[2] In late May, Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, who had been hired to make revision to the script of Ant-Man (2015), had joined the writer's room.[3] According to Deadline Hollywood, one of the ideas that came from the writer's room was had the working title of Transformers One,[3] and would serve as an animated prequel focusing on the Autobot–Decepticon conflict that began on Cybertron.[4][5]

In July 2017, it was reported that Hasbro owned Boulder Media, an Irish animation studio, had opened a theatrical film division.[6] Hasbro also confirmed that they were working on an animated Transformers film.[6] Following the release of Bumblebee (2018), producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura discussed the animated film, clarifying that it was "in the works" and would "tell the whole Cybertron mythology",[7] assuring that fans of the franchise would enjoy the film.[8][9] In April 2020, it was revealed that Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley had been hired to direct the film.[10] It was also revealed that Hasbro would be producing the film with subsidiary Entertainment One,[11] and that the film would focus on the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron.[12][13]

Writing[edit]

The script was written by Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, who had previously revised the script of Ant-Man (2015) and written Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018).[14] A final draft of the film is being overseen by director Josh Cooley.[15]

Reception[edit]

Pre-release[edit]

An animated film telling the origins of the Autobot–Decepticon war on Cybertron was positively received by reviewers.[9] This idea was supported by Bumblebee (2018) director Travis Knight, who stated he would "love to see [such a] movie".[9]
