This is a timeline of the War in Donbass, from 1 30 April 2017. The timeline follows an ongoing conflict between Ukraine and anti-government pro-Russian separatists supported by Russian troops[1] in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.
Timeline[edit]
1 April[edit]
According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 94 occasions on Ukrainian positions on the last day of March (including on 34 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 42 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 18 occasions in Luhansk region[2][3]).[4][5][6] Twelve ceasefire violations were registered by the Ukrainian military during the first twelve hours of 1 April.[7][8] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that ten Ukrainian servicemen (eight from the Armed Forces and two from the National Guard) were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 31 March.[2][3] One Ukrainian serviceman, who was wounded at Marinka on 12 March, died of wounds in a hospital, Lysenko added.[2][3] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 70 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm self-propelled artillery and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The main targets were Kruta Balka, Zhabicheve, Yasinuvata, Yakovliivka, Kominternove, Sosnovske, Leninske, Oktyabr, Bela Kamyanka, Sakhanka, Spartak, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport. One pro-Russian soldier was killed, another wounded.[9] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded 14 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military opened fire on pro-Russian positions at Slavyanoserbsk, Frunze, Donetskyi, Kalynove, Kalinivka, Lozove, Lohvynove, Sokolniki and Annivka using small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilles rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns and armoured fighting vehicles.[10]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions manned by Ukrainian troops on 20 occasions, four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian strong points at Luhanske, which also became the target of small arms, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. Ukrainian forces at Avdiivka came under small arms, sniper and heavy machine gun fire. Rocket propelled grenades landed in Verkhnyotoretske, where heavy machine gun and sniper fire was also reported. Hostile snipers also harassed Ukrainian troops at Mayorsk (48°23′48″N 37°58′32″E / 48.39667°N 37.97556°E
[11]). Rebel forces fired small arms near Troitske. In the region of Mariupol, rebel forces attacked the Ukrainian stronghold of Vodiane with small arms, heavy machine guns, grenade launchers and antitank guided missiles. Ukrainian marines in Hnutove and Shyrokyne received small arms fire. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian troops at Stanytsia Luhanska became the target of sniper fire.[12]
2 April[edit]
The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 37 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 2 occasions in Luhansk region, on 13 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 22 occasions in the region of Mariupol[13]).[14][15][16] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 1 April.[13] One male civilian was injured at Marinka.[13] Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city reported 35 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. One rebel soldier was wounded in action.[17] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that the Ukrainian army broke the ceasefire on two occasions within the republic boundaries. Armoured fighting vehicles from Krymske engaged pro-Russian positions at Smile, while Kalinivka was shelled by Zu-23-2 antiaircraft artillery and armoured fighting vehicles from Luhanske.[18]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 15 occasions, one Ukrainian soldier was wounded. In the region of Mariupol, rebel forces used small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and 120 mm mortars to attack Ukrainian marines' redoubts near Pavlopil. Vodiane became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers. Ukrainian marines at Shyrokyne were harassed by small arms fire from the rebel-held area of Sakhanka. In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, Avdiivka came under small arms, heavy machine gun and 82 mm mortar fire. Novoselivka was shelled by 73 mm antitank recoilless guns, while the stronghold of Zaitseve was hit by rocket propelled grenades. In the northern section of the demarcation line, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian strongholds around Stanytsia Luhanska. Rocket propelled grenades were fired at Ukrainian forces in Krymske.[19][20][21]
3 April[edit]
According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 32 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 13 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 16 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 3 occasions in Luhansk region[21]).[22][23][24] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass region on 2 April.[21] A teenage boy was injured by shelling in Marinka.[25] Separatist authorities in Donetsk city recorded 36 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire involving small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. The Ukrainian military attacked pro-Russian positions in 15 different locations, including Yasinuvata, Yakovliivka, Oleksandrivka and Dokuchaevsk.[26] No Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were reported in the morning by the authorities of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic over the past 24 hours.[27]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions manned by Ukrainian troops on 23 occasions, two Ukrainian servicemen were killed, two were wounded. In the areas of Donetsk city and Horlivka, rebel forces fired 120 mm and 82 mm on Avdeevka and Butivka coal mine. Small arms and rocket launchers were fired at Pisky, Verhnyotoretske, Yuzhne and Avdiivka. Heavy machine guns targeted Ukrainian positions at Kamyanka and Krasnohorivka, and small arms fire was reported at Zaitseve. p;Ukrainian forces at Shyrokyne and Chermalyk received heavy machine gun fire. Small arms fire was likewise reported at Vodiane and Bohdanivka. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Krymske came under 120 mm mortar fire. In some cases, Ukrainian forces fired back.[28][29][25][30] Local officials from the Luhansk People's Republic said that in the afternoon Ukrainian forces from Popasna shelled pro-Russian strong points at Pervomaisk with automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars and Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns.[31]
4 April[edit]
The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 48 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 2 occasions in Luhansk region, on 19 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 27 occasions in the region of Mariupol[32]).[33][34][35] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and five wounded in the Donbass region on 3 April.[32] One Ukrainian soldier, who was wounded near Avdiivka on 2 March, died of wounds in a hospital, Motuzyanyk added.[32] During his daily briefing to the press, deputy minister of defence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, reported that the Ukrainian army broke the ceasefire on 51 occasions over the last 24 hours. According to the statement, the Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions in 22 locations, specially at Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Novolaspa and Donetsk airport. One civilian resident was killed at Kominternove.[36][37] In the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, local officials recorded two Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire, The Ukrainian military engaged the rebel strongholds of Pervomaisk and Kalinivka with small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns and armoured fighting vehicles. One pro-Russian soldier was wounded in Pervomaisk.[38][39]

Around Donetsk city and Horlivka, Avdiivka became the target of heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars. Rocket propelled grenades landed in Opytne, while Ukrainian troops at Verkhnyotoretske, Pisky, Kamyanka and Butivka mining complex came under heavy machine gun fire. Krasnohorivka was shelled by 82 mm mortars, while Marinka was fired at by grenade launchers. Hostile snipers harassed Ukrainian troops in Opytne. In the region of Mariupol, rebel forces fired rocket launchers at Ukrainian redoubts in Vodiane, and heavy machine gun fire was recorded in Hnutove. Armoured fighting vehicles also engaged Ukrainian marines strong points near Vodiane and Shyrokyne. Ukrainian forces around Novotroitske received sniper fire. Small arms fire was used by rebel troops against Bohdanivka, Pavlopil and Hranitne. In the northern section of the demarcation line, rebel forces shelled Krymske with 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, and fired small arms at Ukrainian troops in Lobacheve.[40][41][42] Later in the evening, pro-Russian sources reported heavy fighting involving armoured vehicles and artillery around Donetsk city and Horlivka.[43]
5 April[edit]
According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 54 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 20 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 30 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region[44]).[45][46][47][42] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 4 April.[44] A skirmish between the warring parties took place near Marinka.[44] Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city reported 55 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks to pound pro-Russian positions in 19 locations like Yakovliivka, Petrovske, Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, Spartak and Petrovsky district in Donetsk city.[48][49] Sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported one instance in which the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire. The incident took place when Ukrainian forces from Krymske opened fire on pro-Russian positions at Zholobok with small arms and automatic grenade launchers.[50]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions manned by Ukrainian troops on 18 occasions, one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded. In the region of Mariupol rebel forces fired small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers at Ukrainian troops in Pavlopil and Vodiane. Ukrainian positions at Shyrokyne were raked with small arms fire. Sniper fire was reported at Novotroitske. Around Donetsk city and Horlivka, the separatists opened fire on Ukrainian strong points near Avdiivka with small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars. Ukrainian forces at Pisky and Zaitseve received heavy machine gun fire, while snipers harassed Ukrainian troops at Pisky. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Syze.[51][52]
6 April[edit]
The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 29 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 3 occasions in Luhansk region, on 7 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 19 occasions in the region of Mariupol[53]).[54][55][56][57][58] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 5 April.[53] Two more servicemen were injured by explosion of unidentified explosive device and a 62-year-old male civilian was injured in Avdiivka, Lysenko added.[53] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 47 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm artillery. The Ukrainian military opened fire on 19 rebel-held locations. There were 32 violations around Donetsk city, 11 in the region of Mariupol and 4 in the area of Horlivka.[59][60] Local officials in the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces broke the truce on two occasions inside the republic's territory. Pro-Russian positions at Krasny Yar were the target of small arms, grenade launchers and automatic grenade launchers firing from Stanytsia Luhanska. Pervomaisk was shelled by 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles firing from Novooleksandrivka.[61]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 14 occasions, one Ukrainian soldier was wounded. Around Donetsk city, the Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and different types of rocket launchers. Rebel forces in the region of Mariupol fired small arms and grenade launchers against Ukrainian redoubts at Pavlopil, Vodiane and Shyrokyne. Ukrainian troops at Pavlopil were also harassed by heavy machine gun fire. The Ukrainian army fired back. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, rocket propelled grenades landed in Novooleksandrivka.[62][63] Later in the evening a total of 37 ceasefire violations were recorded, mainly in the eastern outskirts of Donetsk city, where Avdiivka, Marinka, Krasnohorivka and Pisky came under mortar fire. One civilian resident was wounded in Avdiivka.[64]
7 April[edit]
According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 48 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 11 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 29 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region[65]).[66][67][68][69][70][71] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 6 April.[66][65] One civilian was injured in Avdiivka.[65][66] Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city reported 46 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian forces used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. Ceasefire violations amounted to 277 during the week, when 28 settlements came under hostile fire. One pro-Russian soldier was killed and two wounded, while two civilian residents died and eight were injured.[72] In the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, meanwhile, according to local reports, the Ukrainian military broke the truce twice. Veselehorivka was shelled from Troitske by automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, while Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles from Mironovske engaged pro-Russian positions at Sanzharivka, supported by small arms fire.[73]

In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, the rebels fired heavy machine guns and 82 mm mortars at Verhnyotoretske. Rocket propelled grenades hit Ukrainian positions at Avdiivka, which was also the target of heavy machine guns. Pisky was shelled by 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian forces at Vodiane came under heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire, Ukrainian troops were harassed with heavy machine guns at Novohryhorivka and Chermalyk and with small arms at Novotroitske. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian strong points near Novohryhorivka. In the northern section of the demarcation line, pro-Russian forces fired automatic grenade launchers at Ukrainian positions in Katerinivka. Heavy machine gun fire was reported near Krymske.[74][75][76]
An OSCE statement reported six civilians killed in the Donbass over the past week.[77]
8 April[edit]
The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 43 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 3 occasions in Luhansk region, on 16 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 24 occasions in the region of Mariupol[76]).[78][79][80][81] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 7 April.[76] One Ukrainian soldier died of wounds in a hospital.[82] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 56 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. The Ukrainian military attacked pro-Russian positions at 21 locations. One soldier was killed and two wounded, two civilians were injured at Petrovsky district, Donetsk city.[83][84] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said the Ukrainian forces in the republic territory broke the ceasefire once, when Frunze was shelled by antitank rocket launchers and 120 mm mortars firing from Krymske.[85]

Rebel forces fired machine guns and rocket launchers at Ukrainian strong points around Avdiivka. Rocket propelled grenades also landed in Zaitseve and Kamyanka. Small arms and antitank rockets were fired at Ukrainian forces in Marinka. Ukrainian troops at Pisky were harassed by machine gun fire, and sniper fire was reported at Troitske and Zaitseve. In the region of Mariupol armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Novohryhorivka, while Vodiane became the target of small arms, grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars. Rocket propelled grenades landed in Hnutove, and small arms fire was reported at Shyrokyne.[86][87]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 59 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 26 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 31 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 2 occasions in Luhansk region[88]).[89][90][91] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 8 April.[88][92] Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city reported 52 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery to engage pro-Russian positions in 19 locations.[93] One separatist soldier was killed in action.[94] The Ukrainian army broke the ceasefire on two occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People' s Republic. Armoured fighting vehicles from Novotoshkivke opened fire on the village of Donetskyi, while 82 mm mortar volleys fired from Troitske landed in Lomovatka. One civilian was wounded.[95]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions manned by Ukrainian troops on 18 occasions. In the region of Mariupol rebel forces fired grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars at Novotroitske. Heavy machine guns and grenade launchers were used against Ukrainian positions at Vodiane and Shyrokyne, while small arms fire was reported at Hnutove and Talakivka. Armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian forces at Novohryhorivka. Around Donetsk city, Ukrainian forces at Avdiivka received heavy machine gun fire. North of Horlivka, rocket propelled grenades landed in Luhanske and Zaitseve. The separatists fired heavy machine guns at Novotoshkivke and rocket launchers at Krymske, in the northern section of the demaration line.[96]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 44 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 8 occasions in Luhansk region, on 9 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 27 occasions in the region of Mariupol[97]).[98][99][100] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and injured in the Donbass region on 9 April.[97] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 43 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks to engage pro-Russian positions in 17 locations, among them Dolomitne, Dokuchaievsk, Yasinuvata, Yakovliivka and Kruta Balka. One pro-Russian soldier was killed. Ukrainian tanks shelled civilian residences at Dokuchaievsk.[101][102][103] Local officials in the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces broke the truce on four occasions within the republic boundaries.The Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, ZU-23-2 antiaircraft guns and armoured fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Donetskyi, Kalinivka, Kalynove and Nyzhne Lozove.[104]

Nearby Berezove came under heavy machine gun and 82 mm mortar fire, while Hnutove and Vodiane became the target of heavy machine guns and different types of grenade launchers. Sniper fire was recorded at Novotroitske. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, rebel forces fired heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars at Ukrainian redoubts at Avdiivka and Butivka mining complex came under 120 mm mortar fire. Zaitseve and Marinka, meanwhile, became the target of small arms and grenade launchers. In the northern section of the demarcation line, 82 mm mortar volleys landed in Krymske. The separatists fired small arms and rocket launchers at Ukrainian forces around Stanytsia Luhanska and the village of Donets.[105][106]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 64 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 27 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 31 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region[107]).[108][109][110][111] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 10 April.[107] A 38-year-old male civilian was injured by shelling in Marinka.[107][112] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded 64 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. Rebel forces attacked Zaitseve with heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. Sniper fire harassed Ukrainian troops near Krasnohorivka. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Krymske. Rocket propelled grenades were fired at Ukrainian troops in Katerinivka. Armoured personnel carriers engaged Ukrainian strong points around Novooleksandrivka, supported by rocket launchers.[117][118][119]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 45 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 4 occasions in Luhansk region, on 19 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 22 occasions in the region of Mariupol[120]).[119][121][122] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 11 April.[120] Pro-Russian officials in Donetsk city reported 50 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at 16 locations, among them Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, the industrial area of Avdiivka, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.[123][124] One separatist soldier was killed in action.[125] According to local sources, Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire on four occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian army employed small arms, rocket launchers, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns and armoured fighting vehicles to pound pro-Russian positions at Frunze, Lohvynve and Lozove.[126]

Armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian redoubts at Opytne. Small arms fire harassed Ukrainian forces at Pisky, while heavy machine guns and rocket launchers targeted the Ukrainian defenders of Zaitseve. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Novooleksandrivka, Novozvanivka ansd Krymske became the target of heavy machine guns and grenade launchers.[127][128][129] Later in the evening one Ukrainian soldier was killed by shelling at Butivka coal mine.[130]
According to president Poroshenko Ukraine has lost 69 servicemen so far in 2017 (2,652 from the start of Russian invasion in 2014).[131]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 61 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 18 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 35 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region[132]).[133][134][135] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and two Ukrainian soldiers were wounded in the Donbass region on 12 April.[132] All the casualties occurred in the area of Avdiivka, Motuzyanyk added.[132] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded 57 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. Heavy artillery fire was reported at Spartak, while Ukrainian tanks engaged pro-Russian strong points at Leninske. Mortar volleys struck the industrial area of Avdiivka, Petrovsky and Zaitseve. Two pro-Russian soldiers were killed and another wounded.[136] The Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire on three occasions within the borders of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People' s Republic. Armoured fighting vehicles, supported by grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars and antitank guided missiles fired upon Ukrainian redoubts at Opytne. Rocket propelled grenades hit Ukrainian outposts near Nevelske, while Ukrainian soldiers at Butivka coal mine received small arms fire. Rebel forces in the northern sector of the demarcation line launched rocket propelled grenades at Ukrainian positions near Novooleksandrivka and Katerinivka.[138][139] Inappropriate weapon handling resulted in death of two Ukrainian servicemen in the Donbas conflict zone.[140]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 65 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 3 occasions in Luhansk region, on 19 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 43 occasions in the region of Mariupol[141]).[142][143] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 13 April.[141] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city recorded 58 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks to engage pro-Russian positions in 19 locations.[144] In the same briefing, the separatists reported that the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire on 380 over the past week. Eight pro-Russian soldiers were killed and three wounded.[145] Authorities from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic said that there were 25 Ukrainian violations of the truce inside their boundaries on the same period.[146]

Banned heavy weapons were used to shell Zaitseve, Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, Yakovliivka, Staromyhailivka, Sakhanka, Spartak and Donetsk airport.[153][154] According to local officials, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire twice inside the territory of the Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military shelled Kalynove-Borshchevate and Sokolniki with automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars.[155]

The Ukrainian military pounded 13 settlements along the demarcation line using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery. Banned heavy weapons were employed to shell pro-Russian positions at Yasinuvata, Vasiliivka and Donetsk airport. Two separatist soldiers were wounded in action.[163][164] No violations of the ceasefire were reported by local authorities in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic.[165]

The Ukrainian military attacked pro-Russian positions at Zaitseve, Zheleznaya Balka, Spartak, Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, esele, Dokuchaievsk, Kominternove, Leninske, Sosnovske, Nikolaevka, Oktyabr, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.[189] According to sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire on one occasion, when Ukrainian forces from Krymske shelled Frunze with automatic grenade launchers.[190]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 47 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 20 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 23 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region[203]).[202][204][205] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and eight wounded in the Donbass region on 20 April.[203] All the casualties occurred in the region of Avdiivka, except for one that took place at Marinka. Three of the wounded servicemen were from the National Guard, all others were from the Armed Forces.[203] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 38 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks to pound pro-Russian positions in 13 different locations along the demarcation line. The same sources recorded 235 violations during the past week. Two separatist soldiers were killed and five wounded.[206][207] The Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire on four occasions in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 41 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 5 occasion in Luhansk region, on 17 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 19 occasions in the region of Mariupol[211]).[212][213][214][215] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 21 April.[211] The casualties occurred in Avdiivka and in Pisky, Lysenko added.[211] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported 39 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 46 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 28 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 13 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 5 occasions in Luhansk region[222]).[221][223][224] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and three were wounded in the Donbass region on 22 April. On civilian was injured by shelling in Marinka.[222][225] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 41 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 13 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. Rocket propelled grenades, 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Nevelske, while Ukrainian troops at Pisky and Butivka coal mine received small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire. Luhanske was shelled by 82 mm mortars, while small arms fire was reported at Zaitseve. Hostile snipers harassed Ukrainian forces at Vodyane, in the region of Mariupol, where small arms fire was reported at Hnutove and Pavlopil. In the northern section of the demarcation line, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian strong points around Novooleksandrivka, which also became the target of rocket launchers. Rebel forces opened fire on Novozvanivka with heavy machine guns and 82 mm mortars.[229]
One observer of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM) was killed and at least two were injured after the vehicle they were driving on "came into contact with a mine" in Luhansk region. The chairman of the OSCE mission in Ukraine demanded a swift investigation of the incident.[230][231][232][233][234]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 34 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 8 occasions in Luhansk region, on 11 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 15 occasions in the region of Mariupol[235]).[236][237][238] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and two others were wounded in the Donbass region on 23 April.[235] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported 28 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 11 locations along the demarcation line using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. The main targets were pro-Russian positions at Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, Zaitseve, Vasiliivka, Zheleznaya Balka, Kominternove, Sakhanka, Oktyabr, Leninske, Donetsk airport, Kirov and Petrovsky districts in Donetsk city. One pro-Russian soldier was killed and another wounded.[239][240] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic recorded 11 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire inside the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, grenade launchers, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to attack rebel positions at Frunze, Kalinivka, Pervomaisk and Knyaz Igor memorial.[241]

Three civilians were killed and three others injured when a tractor they were riding on hit an explosive device in Luhansk region.[245][246]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 21 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 5 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 14 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 2 occasions in Luhansk region[247]).[248][249][250] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 24 April.[247] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 30 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 12 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. The Ukrainian military engaged pro-Russian positions at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Ozeryanivka, Kominternove, Sakhanka, Leninske, Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.[251][252] Local authorities in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire once within the republic border, when Ukrainian forces from Krymske opened fire on Sokolniki with small arms and automatic grenade launchers.[253]

In the region of Mariupol, armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian marines strong points around Shyrokyne and Vodiane. Vodiane was also fired at by small arms, grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. Novotroitske was meanwhile the target of snipers, automatic grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars. Rocket propelled grenades and 82 mm mortar volleys landed in Hnutove. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, armoured personnel carriers opened fire on Ukrainian redoubts at Novooleksandrivka and Novozvanivka, while small arms and automatic grenade launchers were fired at Valuiske and Zhovte. Novooleksandrivka also became the target of Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns and 122 mm artillery.[254][255][256][257][258]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 65 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 12 occasions in Luhansk region, on 21 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 32 occasions in the region of Mariupol[259]).[260][261][262] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were killed and five wounded in the Donbass region on 25 April.[259] During his daily briefing to the press, deputy minister of defence of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire on 54 occasions over the past 24 hours. According to the statement, the Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery to attack pro-Russian positions in 17 locations, among them Yasinuvata, Kruta Balka, Zhabicheve, Dokuchaievsk, Yakovliivka, Spartak and Donetsk airport.[263][264][265] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded five Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire inside the republic boundaries. According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 47 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 8 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 26 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 13 occasions in Luhansk region[270]).[268][271][272][273] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and six others were wounded in the Donbass region on 26 April.[270] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 42 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. The Ukrainian military opened fire on 13 rebel-held locations. The main targets were Zaitseve, Horlivka, Krasny Partizan, Sakhanka, Oktyabr, Leninske, Kominternove, Dokuchaievsk, Yasinuvata, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.[274][275] In the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, local authorities reported four violations of the ceasefire. Ukrainian forces engaged pro-Russian positions at Pervomaisk, Kalynove, Almazna and Lohvynove with small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles.[276]

Heavy machine guns and antitank grenade launchers were fired at nearby Krasnohorivka. Armoured fighting vehicles attacked Mironovske, which also became the target of heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars. Heavy machine gun fire was reported at Troitske and Kamyanka. The separatists pounded Avdiivka with heavy machine gun, rocket propelled grenade and 82 mm mortar fire. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, rocket propelled grenades landed in Stanytsia Luhanska and Syze, while Ukrainian troops at Vaaluiske received intense small arms fire.[277]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 52 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 8 occasions in Luhansk region, on 12 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 32 occasions in the region of Mariupol[278]).[279][280][281] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 27 April.[278] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 57 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 17 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks.[282] The same sources recorded 289 incidents over the past week, including the firing of 1097 rounds of mortars, tanks and artillery.[283] Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire six times within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, according to local officials. The Ukrainian military used small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Pervomaisk, Sanzharivka, Smile and Lozove.[284] There were 30 violations of the ceasefire during the week, according to the same authorities.[285]

One separatist soldier and three civilians were wounded.[295][296] Local sources reported ten Ukrainian violations of the truce in the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic.
