This is a timeline of the War in Donbass, for September 2017. The timeline follows an ongoing conflict between Ukraine and anti-government pro-Russian separatists supported by Russian troops[1] in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.

1 September[edit]
According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 24 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 18 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 3 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 3 occasions in Luhansk region).[2][3][4][5] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass area on the last day of August.[2] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported 17 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 7 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. Pro-Russian troops at five different settlements around Donetsk city were attacked with small arms, 82 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. Small arms fire was reported In the region of Mariupol, while armoured fighting vehicles engaged pro-Russian positions near Horlivka. In the course of the past week, there were 186 Ukrainian violations. The Ukrainian army fired 642 rounds from banned heavy weapons like 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, tanks and heavy artillery.[6] Sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire three times within the republic boundaries. Ukrainian forces employed small arms, rocket launchers and automatic grenade launchers to pound pro-Russian positions at Frunze, Kalynove and Lohvynove.[7]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 8 occasions. Pro-Russian forces only used small arms. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, there were incidents in Avdiivka, Butivka mining complex, Zaitseve and Maiorsk, in the region of Mariupol in Vodiane, and in the northern sector of the demarcation line, in Stanytsia Luhanska, Krymske and Zhovte.[8][9]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 20 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 14 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 2 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region[10]).[9][11][12] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on the first day of September.[10] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 21 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 12 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[13] Pro-Russian positions at eight different areas around Donetsk city were attacked with small arms, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian forces shelled Kominternove with 120 mm mortars. Pro-Russian troops at Sosnovske and Oktyabr became the target of small arms and rocket launchers. Small arms and grenade launchers were fired in the area of Horlivka.[14] Local officials reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on six occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian army used small arms and automatic grenade launchers to attack pro-Russian positions at Krasny Yar, Zholobok, Frunze and Pervomaisk.[15]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 4 occasions. In the outskirts of Donetsk, the separatists fired small arms at Ukrainian forces near Avdiivka and Butivka coal mine. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian troops became the target of small arms and antitank rockets at Vodiane, while in the northern section of the demarcation line, small arms and grenade launchers were fired at Krymske and Lobacheve.[16][17]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 26 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 15 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 10 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 1 occasion in Luhansk region[17]).[18][19][20] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass area on 2 September.[17][21] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported 29 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 14 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. Pro-Russian positions at ten areas around Donetsk city were attacked with small arms, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. In the regions of Mariupol and Horlivka, the Ukrainian army fired small arms, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars on pro-Russian redoubts at four different locations.[22] Local sources reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on two occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian army employed small arms and automatic grenade launchers to attack pro-Russian positions at Frunze and Pervomaisk.[23]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 17 occasions. In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, rebel forces attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Zaitseve with small arms, heavy machine guns and 120 mm mortars. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on the same positions later in the evening. Small arms fire was reported at Avdiivka and Butivka mining complex. In the region of Mariupol, 120 mm mortar rounds landed in Talakivka and Hnutove, while heavy machine gun fire harassed Ukrainian troops at Pavlopil and Vodiane.[24] During an unusual afternoon briefing, Donetsk People's Republic deputy minister of defense, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian tanks and armoured fighting vehicles, supported by small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 152 mm self-propelled guns, engaged pro-Russian positions at Bezimenne and Kominternove, in the region of Mariupol, from 4:00 to 8:00 am.[25][26]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 44 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 23 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 19 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 2 occasions in Luhansk region[27]).[28][29][26][30] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the combat area on 3 September.[27] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 23 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in ten different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and self-propelled guns. Seven areas around Donetsk city became the target of small arms, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. Ukrainian tanks shelled two settlements in the region of Mariupol, with the support of small arms, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles attacked pro-Russian positions at Zaitseve, north of Horlivka, supported by small arms and rocket launchers.[31] Local sources reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on seven occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian army employed small arms and automatic grenade launchers to attack pro-Russian positions at Frunze, Lozove, Nyzhne Lozove, Kalynove and Krasny Yar.[32]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 9 occasions. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian positions around Vodiane were fired at from heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. Antitank rockets also landed in Shyrokyne and Lebedinske later in the evening. In the surroundings of Donetsk city, Ukrainian forces at Avdiivka were harassed with smalla rms and heavy machine gun fire. Nearby Marinka was struck by antitank rockets, and under-barrell launched grenades hit Ukrainian redoubts at Nevelske. Small arms fire was reported at night in Malynove, Stanytsia Luhanska and Krymske, in the northern sector of the demarcation line.[33][34]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 36 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day.[35][34][36][37] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties on 4 September.[38] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 30 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 13 different locations using small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. Pro-Russian positions were attacked in nine areas around Donetsk city with small arms, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Kominternove, while small arms fire and antitank rockets hit Sakhanka and Leninske. Near Horlivka, Krasny Partizan came under 120 mm mortar fire.[39] Sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire seven times within the republic boundaries. Ukrainian forces employed small arms, under-barrel grenade launchers and rocket launchers to pound pro-Russian positions at Frunze, Kalynove, Krasny Yar and Lozove.[40]

In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, Ukrainian troops were harassed with small arms and heavy machine gun fire at Avdiivka and Zaitseve. Antitank rockets landed in nearby Marinka. In the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Starohnativka later in the evening, while small arms and heavy machine gun targeted Ukrainian forces at Talakivka, Vodiane, Hnutove and Shyrokyne. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, rebel forces fired rocket launchers at Krymske.[41][42]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 32 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 15 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 16 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 1 occasion in Luhansk region[43]).[44][42][45] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties on 5 September.[43] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 41 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 15 different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. Eleven areas around Donetsk city were targeted with small arms, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. BMP vehicles also engaged pro-Russian positions at Oktyabr and Novolaspa, in the region of Mariupol. The nearby villages of Kominternove and Novolaspa came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire.[46] Local sources reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on three occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian army employed small arms and automatic grenade launchers to attack pro-Russian positions at Frunze and Lozove.[47]

Around Donetsk city and Horlivka, there was harassing fire on Ukrainian redoubts at Zaitseve, while heavy machine guns and rocket launchers were fired at the industrial area of Avdiivka later in the evening. In the region of Mariupol, rebel forces attacked Ukrainian troops at Vodiane, Bohdanika, Talakivka and Hnutove with heavy machine guns and antitank rockets. In the northern section of the demarcation line, 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Krymske.[48]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 34 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 13 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 19 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 2 occasions in Luhansk region[49]).[50][51][52][53] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass area on 6 September.[49] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported 18 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in nine locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. Pro-Russian forces in seven different areas around Donetsk city were attacked with small arms, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Kominternove. In the outskirts of Horlivka, armoured fighting vehicles engaged pro-Russian entrenchments at Zaitseve, supported by small arms fire. Two pro-Russian soldiers were killed by snipers.[54] Sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire six times within the republic boundaries. Ukrainian forces employed small arms and rocket launchers to pound pro-Russian positions at Frunze, Zholobok, Krasny Yar, Kalynove and Lohvynove.[55]

In the area around Donetsk city and Horlivka, rebel forces fired heavy machine guns and rocket launchers at Zaitseve and the industrial area of Avdiivka, while 82 mm and 120 mm volleys landed in Marinka. in the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian forces at Starohnativka later in the evening. Earlier, Vodiane was attacked with grenade launchers and Shyrokyne received small arms fire. Lobacheve, in the northern section of the demarcation line,came under 120 mm mortar fire. One Ukrainian serviceman was killed in industrial zone of Avdiivka.[56][57][58]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 25 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 10 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 14 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 1 occasion in Luhansk region.[59]).[60][61][62][63] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed in the combat area on 7 September.[59] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 37 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 11 different locations using small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[64] The same sources recorded 299 incidents throughout the week, with 344 rounds fired by mortars, tanks and artillery.[65] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire on six occasions within the republic boundaries. Ukrainian forces employed small arms, machine guns and automatic grenade launchers to pound pro-Russian positions at Frunze, Krasny Yar, Lozove and Lohvynove.[66]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian army on 14 occasions. In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, rebel forces opened fire on Avdiivka, Butivka coal mine and Zaitseve with small arms and rocket launchers. Later in the evening, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian entrenchments at Pisky supported by small arms, heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. In the area of Svitlodarsk dam, Ukrainian redoubts at Semyhorye were engaged by antiaircraft fire and armoured fighting vehicles. Three Ukrainian soldiers were wounded in action.[67][68][69]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 35 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 19 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 12 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region[70]).[71][69][72][73] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded on 8 September.[70][74] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded 49 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 15 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and heavy artillery.[75] Pro-Russian redoubts in 12 areas around Donetsk city were attacked with small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled guns. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian troops fired small arms and rocket launchers at Oktyabr and Leninske. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles engaged pro-Russian positions in the area of Horlivka supported by small arms fire and antitank rockets. One civilian was wounded by sniper fire.[76] Local sources reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on six occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian army employed small arms, antitank rockets and automatic grenade launchers to attack pro-Russian positions at Zholobok, Kalinivka, Frunze and Lozove.[77]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 16 occasions — including on 6 occasions near Vodiane, the village that is situated about 10 km NE from the eastern border of Mariupol — the fire was returned on several occasions. The rebels used heavy machine guns and rocket launchers to attack Vodiane, while small arms fire was reported at nearby Shyrokyne. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, Marinka was shelled with grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. The industrial area of Avdiivka and Zaitseve were hit by small arms fire and antitank rockets. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, 120 mm mortar volleys struck Lobacheve.[78] One Ukrainian soldier was killed and another wounded near Krasnohorivka at around 10:00 pm.[79]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 41 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 17 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 23 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 1 occasion in Luhansk region[80]).[79][81][82][83][84] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and two others were wounded and injured on 9 September.[80] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 25 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 11 different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and heavy artillery.[85] In the outskirts of Donetsk city, pro-Russian forces in eight areas were attacked with small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled guns. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm mortar rounds hit Kominternove, while small arms fire was reported at Sosnovske. In the region of Horlivka, Ukrainian troops at Zaitseve were harassed with small arms fire.[86] Local authorities reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on five occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian army employed small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles and 82 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian positions at Lozove, Zholobok and Sokolniki.[87]

Pro-Russian positions in nine areas around Donetsk city were targeted by small arms, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. In the region of Mariupol, Leninske, Sakhanka and Kominternove became the target of small arms, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars. In the area of Horlivka, Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on pro-Russian positions at Myhailivka, supported by small arms fire. Zaitseve came under 82 mm mortar fire.[94][95] Local authorities reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on 12 occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, under-barrell grenade launchers, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Frunze, Znamianka, Molodezhne, Kalinivka, Pervomaisk, Lozove and Zholobok.[96][97]

Nearby Chermalyk came under 82 mm mortar fire. At dusk, Talakivka was shelled by armoured fighting vehicles supported by rockets launchers. In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Pisky, while small arms fire was reported at Zaitseve.[98]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 22 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 7 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 10 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 5 occasions in Luhansk region[223]).[224][225][226][227] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass area on 24 September.[223] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city recorded 32 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 16 different settlements using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[228] Pro-Russian forces in ten areas around Donetsk city were attacked with small arms, rocket launchers, armoured fighting vehicles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 13 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 8 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city and on 5 occasions in the region of Mariupol[233]), the fire was returned on 11 occasions.[234][232][235][236] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties on 25 September.[233] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded 35 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 15 different settlements using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[237] Around Donetsk city, Ukrainian forces opened fire on Petrovsky district, Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Yakovlivka, Vasiliivka, Mineralne and Kruta Balka using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. In the region of Mariupol, Leninske was shelled by 120 mm mortars, while Sosnovske, Sakhanka, Dzerzhinsky, Oktyabr and Kominternove were hit by small arms fire and antitank rockets. According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 15 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 7 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 4 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region[241]); the fire was returned on 12 occasions.[242][245][246][247] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass area on 26 September.[241] Thirty-thousand people were evacuated from Kalynivka Raion in Vinnytsia Oblast due to the Kalynivka ammunition depot explosion that started on 26 September at around 10:00 pm.[248][243] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported 25 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in ten different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks.[249] In the area of Donetsk, Ukrainian tanks engaged pro-Russian positions supported by 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire in Petrovsky district, Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Abakumove coal mine, Mineralne and Kruta Balka. The incidents also involved small arms, grenade launchers and armoured fighting vehicles. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Kominternove, while small arms fire and antitank rockets hit the outskirts of Sakhanka. In the surroundings of Horlivka, Zaitseve was shelled with 120 mm mortars. One pro-Russian soldier was killed in action and a civilian resident wounded.[250] Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on five occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military attacked pro-Russian positions at Beresovske, Smile, Frunze and Lohvynove using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and rocket launchers.[251]
