This is a timeline of the War in Donbass for December 2017. The timeline follows an ongoing conflict between Ukraine and anti-government pro-Russian separatists supported by Russian troops[1] in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.

1 December[edit]
The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 25 occasions on Ukrainian positions on the last day of November (including on 9 occasions in Donetsk region and on 16 occasions in Luhansk region[2][3]); the fire was returned on 13 occasions.[2][3][4][5][6] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded on 30 November.[2][3] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 29 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 17 locations using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars.[7][8] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire eight times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, rocket launchers, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, BMP-1 armoured vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled guns to pound pro-Russian positions at Lohvynove, Kalynove, Lozove, Kalynivka, Zolote and Sentianivka.[9]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 10 occasions. The northern section of the demarcation line continued to be the epicenter of rebel activity. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian positions at Lozove, Zaitseve, Krymske, and Zhovte supported by small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. Novotoshkivke, Novooleksandrivka and Novoluhanske came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. In the area of Donetsk city, light weapons were used to harass Ukrainian troops at Kamyanka, while 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Marinka. Small arms fire and antitank rockets landed in Nevelske. In the region of Mariupol, small arms and rocket launchers were fired at Vodiane and Berezove.[10] One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded near Troitske, and died of wounds in a hospital in Popasna, another soldier was injured by the explosion of an IED at Verkhnyotoretske.[11][12]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 26 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 9 occasions in Donetsk and on 17 occasions in Luhansk region[11][12]); the fire was returned on 14 occasions.[11][12][13][14] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on the first day of December, one of the wounded soldiers died of wounds in a hospital.[11][12] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 27 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 16 locations using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars.[15][16] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire seven times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, rocket launchers, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Lozove, Veselohorivka, Sokolniki, Kalynove-Borshchevate, Pervomaisk, Kalynove, Lohvynove and Nyzhne Lozove.[17]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 10 occasions, a 31-year-old female civilian was wounded by shelling in Verkhnyotoretske.[18] In the region of Mariupol, heavy shelling was reported at Vodiane and Shyrokyne, which became the target of 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Ukrainian troops at Vodiane and Hnutove were also fired at by armoured fighting vehicles. Talakivka, meanwhile, was struck by 120 mm mortar fire. The rebels raked Shyrokyne with antiaircraft fire, while Pavlopil and Hnutove came under small arms and heavy machine gun fire. In the outskirts of Donetsk city, the separatists fired heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and antitank guided missiles at Avdiivka and Opytne. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Novoluhanske was shelled with 152 mm self-propelled guns, while Novooleksandrivka, Novotoshkivke, Zolote, Popasna, Luhanske and Troitske were fired from small arms, grenade launchers and mortars. One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded at Zolote, one soldier was injured at Opytne, another at Luhanske.[19][20]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 30 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 12 occasions in Donetsk region and on 18 occasions in Luhansk region[19][20]); the fire was returned on 12 occasions.[21][19][20] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded and two others were injured in the Donbass region on 2 December.[20][19] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded 46 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 20 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery.[22][23][24] According to local sources, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on six occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military used small arms, rocket launchers, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles to pound pro-Russian redoubts at Kalynivka, Sentianivka and Zhovte.[25]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops 19 times.[26][27] Pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian redoubts around Avdiivka, in the surroundings of Donetsk. Avdiivka, along with nearby Verkhnyotoretske and Marinka, also became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars. In the region of Mariupol, Shyrokyne came under 120 mm mortar fire, while Lebedinske and Pavlopil were shelled with 82 mm mortars. Rebel forces fired small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers at Vodiane, Pavlopil and Talakivka. One Ukrainian serviceman was killed and another wounded by shelling at Shyrokyne, two soldiers were wounded at Troitske, one was wounded near Vodiane. Sniper fire was reported at Novotroitske. The Ukrainian military returned fire on several occasions. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Troitske and Luhanske were shelled with 120 mm mortars, while 82 mm mortars hit Zolote. Ukrainian forces at Zhovte, Zaitseve, Zolote, Krymske, Luhanske, Malynove, Novhorodske, Novoluhanske, Novooleksandrivka and Troitske were attacked with small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and armoured fighting vehicles. Ukrainian forces fired back using small arms, heavy machine guns and armoured fighting vehicles.[28]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 38 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 15 occasions in Donetsk and on 23 occasions in Luhansk region[28]); the fire was returned on 22 occasions.[29][30][31] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and four were wounded in the Donbass region on 3 December. [28][32] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 2 October 2017. Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 48 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 21 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and heavy artillery.[33][34][35] One pro-Russian soldier was killed and another wounded in action.[36] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire eight times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Kalynove, Sentianivka, Kalynivka, Kalynove-Borshchevate, Lohvynove, Kruta Hora and Sokolniki.[37]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 9 occasions. In the outskirts of Donetsk city, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Pisky, supported by grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Luhanske was the target of rocket launchers and mortars. Armoured fighting vehicles attacked Novoluhanske supported by antiaircraft artillery. Antitank rockets struck Zhovte and Zaitseve, while Ukrainian troops at Troitske were harassed with heavy machine gun fire.[38] One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded at Zolote, another at Luhanske, and the third Ukrainian soldier was wounded at Pisky, where one Ukrainian volunteer was killed by shelling too.[39] A 5-hour clash between pro-Russian scouts and Ukrainian army — that started in the early hours of 4 December — took place at Luhanske.[40][41][42] Russian media denounced that a USAF RQ-4 Global Hawk strategic drone performed a surveillance sortie over the demarcation line, at an altitude of 16,700 meters.[43] There were at least three previous flights since 14 May.[44]
5 December[edit]
The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 21 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 4 occasions in Donetsk region and on 17 occasions in Luhansk region[40][41]).[45][46] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO confirmed at noon that three Ukrainian Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 4 December.[40][41] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded 41 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 14 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and heavy artillery. One civilian resident was wounded at Petrovsky district.[47][48][49] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire four times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, rocket launchers, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to pound pro-Russian redoubts at Kalynivka, Kalynove, Lozove, Lohvynove, Knyaz Igor memorial and Pervomaisk.[50]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 13 occasions. Around Donetsk city, 82 mm mortar volleys struck Avdiivka and Opytne. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, the focus of rebel activity on the past days, separatist forces shelled Novozvanivka, Katerinivka and Travneve. Antitank rockets landed in Krymske and Svitlodarsk, while pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian positions at Zaitseve. Small arms fire was reported at Lobacheve and Novoluhanske. In the region of Mariupol, Talakivka was hit by heavy machine gun fire and antitank rockets.[51]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 24 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[52][53] (including on 8 occasions in Donetsk and on 16 occasions in Luhansk region); the fire was returned on 10 occasions.[54][55] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 3 December.[54][55] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 44 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 19 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, tanks and heavy artillery. Pro-Russian forces shot down a Ukrainian drone used to direct artillery fire over Horlivka. One pro-Russian soldier was killed in action.[56][57][58] According to local sources, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire ten times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to pound pro-Russian positions at Dolhe, Kalynivka, Sentianivka, Lozove, Nyzhne Lozove and Donetskyi.[59]

In the outskirts of Donetsk city, Ukrainian forces at Avdiivka became the target of infantry weapons. In the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Shyrokyne, supported by small arms, rocket launchers and 120 mm mortars. Armoured fighting vehicles attacked Bohdanivka, while rocket propelled grenades landed in Hnutove. Vodiane and Starohnativka came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. Novoluhanske, in the northern section of the demarcation line, was also shelled with 120 mm mortars.[60]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 27 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[61] (including on 16 occasions in Donetsk region and on 11 occasions in Luhansk region); the fire was returned on 16 occasions.[62][63] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 6 December.[62][63] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded 46 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 18 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks.[64][65][66] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire eight times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, rocket launchers, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to engage pro-Russian positions at Krasny Yar, Krasny Lyman, Kalynove, Kalynivka and Lohvinove.[67]

Marinka and Butivka mining complex were hit by heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian positions at Novotroitske and Shyrokyne became the target of the same kindof weapons. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Troitske was hit by 120 mm mortar rounds, while Valuiske, Zaiseve, Krymske, Lobacheve, Luhanske, Novoaleksandrivka and Stanytsia Luhanska were attacked with small arms and rocket launchers. The Ukrainian military returned fire using small arms, grenade launchers, heavy machine guns and armoured fighting vehicles. One Ukrainian serviceman was killed and another wounded by shelling at Avdiivka, one Ukrainian soldier was wounded at Shyrokene and another was injured by explosion of a booby trap at Verkhnyotoretske.[69][70]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 17 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[71][72][73] (including on 8 occasions in Donetsk and on 9 occasions in Luhansk region); the fire was returned on 11 occasions.[69][70] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and three were wounded in the Donbass region on 7 December.[69][70] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 35 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 17 locations using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and tanks.[74] There were 277 violations of the ceasefire by the Ukrainian military over the past week, with the use of mortars, tanks and heavy artillery on 1,679 occasions.[75] Four pro-Russian soldiers were killed in action on the same period.[76][77] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire seven times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, rocket launchers, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, guided antitank missiles and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Kalynove, Kalynivka, Zhovte, Lohvynove and Knyaz Igor memorial.[78]

Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles shelled Kamianka and Pisky with the support of infantry weapons and rocket launchers. Ukrainian troops at Kamianka were harassed by hostile snipers. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm and 120 mm mortar rounds landed in Vodiane. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian positions at Maiske were attacked with small arms, grenade launchers, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. Krymske, Luhanske, Katerinivka and Novoaleksandrivka became the target of 82 mm mortar fire. Four Ukrainian servicemen were killed (at Vodiane, Kamianka, and Travneve), one soldier was wounded and one injured.[80][81]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 28 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[82][83][84] (including on 9 occasions in Donetsk region and on 19 occasions in Luhansk region); the fire was returned on 16 occasions.[80][81] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO confirmed at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were killed and two others were wounded and injured in the Donbass region on 8 December.[80][81] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 29 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 16 different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. Pro-Russian authorities acknowledged that their forces returned fire near Dolomitne. One separatist soldier was killed in action.[85][86][87][88] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire 12 times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military used small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to pound pro-Russian positions at Sentianivka, Lohvynove, Molodezhne, Dolhe, Kalynivka, Prishib, Lozove, Novooleksandrivka and Pervomaisk.[89]

In the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian forces at Vodiana and Talakivka, supported by grenade launchers. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian positions at Troitske and Krymske became the target of small arms, antiaircraft guns, armoured fighting vehicles and 120 mm mortars. Antitank rockets and 82 mm mortar rounds struck Luhanske and Popasna. Armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Zaitseve, while heavy machine gun fire harassed Ukrainian troops at Novooleksandrivka and Svitlodarsk.[90][91]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 39 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[92][91] (including on 11 occasions in Donetsk and on 28 occasions in Luhansk region); the fire was returned on 10 occasions.[93][94] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 9 December.[93][94] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded 43 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 20 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and heavy artillery.[95][96][97][98] According to local sources, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire 11 times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, heavy machine guns, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to engage pro-Russian positions at Nyzhne Lozove, Krasny Lyman, Kalynove and Kalynivka.[99]

Ukrainian troops at Avdiivka were harassed with small arms fire. In the region of Mariupol, Vodiane and Talakivka came under attack from rocket launchers and armoured fighting vehicles. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Krymske and Luhanske were shelled with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian positions at Troitske supported by antiaircraft guns and 120 mm mortars. Popasna, meanwhile, was hit by 82 mm mortar fire. Two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded at Avdiivka, three soldiers suffered concussions at Pisky and Lozove.[101][102]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 35 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[103][104] (including on 15 occasions in Donetsk region and on 20 occasions in Luhansk region[101]); the fire was returned on 22 occasions.[101][105] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and three others were injured in the Donbass region on 10 December.[101][102] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 26 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 14 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Novotroitske shelled and damaged a natural gas pipeline near Dokuchaievsk.[106][107][108] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire seven times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Sentianivka, Slavyanoserbsk, Lohvynove, Mariivka, Znamyanka, Lozove, Prishib and Kalynove.[109]

Around Donetsk city, Kamyanka and Opytne were hit by antitank rockets and 82 mm mortar rounds. A railway and the Avdiivka coke plant were damaged. In the region of Mariupol, armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian forces at Hnutove. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Luhanske came under 82 mm mortar fire, while antitank rockets landed in Zaitseve and Popasna. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian positions at Svitlodarsk, while heavy machine gun fire was reported at Novozvaznivka.[110][111]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 22 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[112][113][114] (including on 6 occasions in Donetsk and on 16 occasions in Luhansk region); the fire was returned on 12 occasions.[115][116] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 11 December.[115][116] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 35 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 18 locations using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns, antitank guided missiles, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and heavy artillery. After accusing the Ukrainian government of "preventing the officers from carrying out their duties", Russia withdrew its military observers from the joint Russian-Ukrainian center monitoring the ceasefire. The Ukrainian government called the move a "provocation".[183]

In the outskirts of Horlivka, Ukrainian armored personnel carriers engaged pro-Russian positions at Verkhnyotoretske and Zaitseve, supported by small arms and antitank rockets. In the region of Mariupol, 120 mm mortar rounds landed in Sosnovske and Leninske.[226] According to local sources, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire three times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to pound pro-Russian positions at Lohvynove, Lozove and Kalynivka. Ukrainian BMP-1 armoured vehicles from Luhanske attacked pro-Russian forces at Kalynivka and Lohvynove supported by small arms, heavy machine guns and automatic grenade launchers. Lozove became the target of 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles.[227]

Heavy machine gun fire was reported at Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city. Ukrainian troops at Lebedinske were harassed with small arms fire. Ukrainian positions at Luhanske, in the northern section of the demarcation line, were hit by small arms fire, sniper fire, heavy machine gun fire and 82 mm mortar rounds.[228] Later in the night, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts near Svitlodarsk dam supported by small arms fire. One Ukrainian soldier was killed by a sniper bullet and another wounded by shelling in the area of Luhanske.[229][230][231] Sources from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic also claimed that the Ukrainian military broke the renewed ceasefire agreement, which began at 00:00 am of 23 December, several times using small arms and automatic grenade launchers to attack separatist troops at Yasynuvata, while Holmivsky and Horlivka were shelled from 82 mm and 120 mm mortars.[232]

The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars to pound pro-Russian positions at Sentianivka and Kalynivka.[239]

Near Avdiivka Ukrainian positions were hit by small arms fire, machine gun fire and antitank rockets, and in the area of Verkhnyotoretske Ukrainian forces were harassed with sniper fire.[240] Later in the evening, Kamyanka and Krasnohorivka were also hit by small arms fire and antitank rockets. Krymske, in the northern sector of the demarcation line, was struck by mortar volleys at dusk. Ukrainian forces fired back with automatic grenade launchers. One Ukrainian soldier was wounded in action near Avdiivka.[241][242][243] Donetsk People's Republic media reported two Ukrainian military attacks with antitank rocket launchers on Yasinuvata and Staromyhailivka.[244][245] Pro-Russian forces from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic shot down a small drone over Kalynivka.[246]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 6 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[241][242] (including on 5 occasions in Donetsk region and on 1 occasion in Luhansk region[243]); the fire was returned on 2 occasions.[243] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass region on 24 December.[243][247] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported three Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in Yasinuvata, Staromyhailivka and Vesele using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars.[248] No ceasefire violations were recorded in the territory of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic over the past 24 hours.[249]
The ATO press-centre reported in the evening no ceasefire violations during the first 18 hours of 25 December.[250] Later in the evening, pro-Russian forces from Sosnovske, in the region of Mariupol, shelled Pavlopil with 120 mm mortars. Small arms fire was reported around Stanytsia Luhanska, in the northern section of the demarcation line.[251] Media from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire by shelling Sosnovske, in the region of Mariupol, with 82 mm mortars. There were earlier violations of the brand-new truce in the outskirts of Donetsk city when small arms fire was reported at Kruta Balka[252] and 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles from Marinka were fired at least once on pro-Russian forces at Trudovske.[253] Colonel Andryi Marochko from the self-styled Luhansk People's republic reported two Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire within the republic boundaries when the Ukrainian military fired small arms and 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles into Lohvynove and Kalynivka.[254]

The main targets were the urban areas of Trudovske and Zhabicheve. A Ukrainian quadcopter drone was shot down by rebel forces.[283][284] No violations of the truce were recorded by pro-Russian authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic.[285]
