This is a timeline of the War in Donbass, from 1 to 30 June 2017. The timeline follows an ongoing conflict between Ukraine and anti-government pro-Russian separatists supported by Russian troops[1] in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.

1 June[edit]
The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 35 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 12 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 15 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region[2]).[3][4][5] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and injured in the Donbass region on the last day of May.[2] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 65 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 23 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery. The Ukrainian army opened fire on Zaitseve, Mikhaylivka, Verkhnyotoretske, Zheleznaya Balka, Sakhanka, Oktyabr, Nikolaevka, Sosnovske, Zaichenko, Kominternove, Dzerzhinsky, Leninske, Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, Yakovliivka, Zhabicheve, Yasne, Mineralne, Staromyhailivka, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport. One civilian resident was wounded.[6][7] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded three attacks by the Ukrainian military inside the republic's boundaries. Ukrainian forces used 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Frunze, Horoshche and Sanzharivka.[8]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 9 occasions, no casualties were reported. in the region of Mariupol, rocket propelled grenades and 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Shyrokyne. Hostile snipers harassed Ukrainian troops at Pavlopil and Vodiane. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, small arms and rocket launchers were fired at Ukrainian forces at Malynove.[9]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 28 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 2 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 18 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region[10]).[11][12][13] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on the first day of June.[10] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 34 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 17 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery.[14] According to local authorities, there were three Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military used small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles and 82 mm mortars to pound pro-Russian positions at Kalynove, Kalinivka and Sokolniki.[15]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 15 occasions, one Ukrainian serviceman was killed, three were wounded. In the region of Mariupol, 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Chermalyk, while Novotroitske, Talakivka, Pavlopil and Bohdanivka were hit by small arms fire and antitank rockets. Around Donetsk city and Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian positions at Zaitseve and Maiorsk, Zaitseve, along with Opytne, also came under machine gun fire. Avdiivka was shelled by 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, while nearby Marinka received 82 mm mortar fire. In the northern section of the demarcation line, armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian forces at Krymske, while Donetz was shelled with 82 mm mortars and Novooleksandrivka with antiaircraft artillery. Novozvanivka, Stanytsia Luhanska, Krymske and Novooleksandrivka became the target of small arms and rocket launchers.[16][17] Two civilians, a 20-year-old female and a 71-year-old male, were injured by shelling in Marinka at around 5:00 pm.[18]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 53 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 14 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 25 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 14 occasions in Luhansk region[19]).[17][20][21] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and five others wounded in the Donbass region on 2 June.[19] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 54 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 22 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm artillery, 152 mm artillery and BM-21 "Grad" multiple rocket launchers. The Ukrainian military engaged pro-Russian forces at Zaitseve, Izotove coal mine, Dokuchaievsk, Kamyanka, Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Staromyhailivka, Oleksandrivka, Makiivka and Petrovsky district. One civilian resident was injured.[22][23][24][25] p;According to local authorities, the Ukrainian military broke the truce on six occasions within the borders of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. Frunze, Kalynove, Krasny Yar and Sokolniki became the target of small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars.[26]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 19 occasions, one Ukrainian soldier was wounded. in the region of Mariupol, rebel forces shelled Bohdanivka with 120 mm mortars and Vodiane and Chermalyk with 82 mm mortars. Novotroitske and Chermalyk also became the target of small arms and grenade launchers. West of Donetsk city, Avdiivka and Nevelske were attacked with small arms, rocket launchers and mortars, while 82 mm mortar barrages landed in Marinka and Krasnohorivka. Pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian strong points in Krasnohorivka, later in the evening. Armoured fighting vehicles, supported by rocket launchers, attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Novozvanivka, in the northern sector of the demarcation line. In the same region, Krymske was fired at by automatic grenade launchers, while Novooleksandrivka came under heavy machine gun fire.[27][28][29] A female civilian was injured by shelling in Krasnohorivka.[30]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 58 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 12 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 36 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 10 occasions in Luhansk region[31]).[29][32][33] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and five others wounded in the Donbass region on 3 June.[31] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 65 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 19 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. The Ukrainian army opened fire on pro-Russian positions at Zaitseve, Izotove coal mine, 6-7 coal mine, Leninske, Naberezne, Tavricheske, Oktyabr, Dokuchaievsk, Mineralne, Staromyhailivka, Donetsk-Severnyi and Yasinuvata.[34][35] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded 11 attacks by the Ukrainian military inside the republic's borders. Ukrainian forces used small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Pervomaisk, Frunze, Kalynove, Sokolniki, Klinivka and Kristove.[36]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 14 occasions, no casualties were reported. In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, Avdiivka and Zaitseve came under small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire. Pro-Russian tanks attacked Ukrainian strong points at Krasnohorivka for the second consecutive day. The town was also struck by 82 mm mortar volleys. Zaitseve was also shelled by armoured fighting vehicles. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian forces at Vodiane were engaged by antitank guided missiles and armoured fighting vehicles. Talakivka became the target of small arms, snipers and rocket launchers. Sniper fire was likewise reported at Hnutove. In the northern section of the demarcation line, heavy machine gun fire harassed Ukrainian troops at Novooleksandrivka.[37][38][39]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 60 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 12 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 28 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 20 occasions in Luhansk region[40]).[39][41] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and one was injured in the Donbass region on 4 May.[40] During his daily briefing to the press, deputy minister of defence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire on 44 occasions in 18 different locations over the past 24 hours. According to the statement, the Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery to attack pro-Russian positions. One woman was killed and her son wounded when Trudovske was hit by mortar fire.[42][43] Authorities from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic reported five Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military engaged pro-Russian positions at Frunze, Zholobok, Kalynove and Almazna using small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles.[44]

In the region of Mariupol, rebel forces fired automatic weapons, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm at Ukrainian positions at Bohdanivka, Pavlopil and Chermalyk. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, 120 mm mortar volleys hit Pisky and Krasnohorivka, where two civilian residences were damaged, Pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian strong points at Avdiivka and Pisky. The separatists also pounded Avdiivka with automatic weapons and 120 mm mortars. Heavy machine gun fire was reported at Opytne, while rocket propelled grenades and 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Zaitseve. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Novotoshkivke was shelled with 120 mm mortars. Ukrainian forces at Bohulavske were harassed with small arms fire.[45][46]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 77 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 26 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 39 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 12 occasions in Luhansk region[47]).[46][48][49] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 5 June.[47] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 71 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. Ukrainian forces attacked pro-Russian positions in 26 locations, among them Horlivka, Kominternove, Kruta Balka, Staromykhailivka, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Mineralne, Vasiliivka, Zhabicheve, Lozove, Yakovliivka, Styla, Petrovske, Vesele, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport. Seven civilian residents were wounded.[50][51][52] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded eight attacks by the Ukrainian military inside the republic's boundaries. Ukrainian forces employed small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to engage pro-Russian positions at p;Donetskyi, Kalynove, Frunze, Holubovske, Krasny Yar, Lohvynove and Krasny Liman.[53]

In the region of Mariupol, separatist forces shelled Chermalyk with 120 mm mortars and BM-21 "Grad" multiple rocket launchers. Ukrainian positions at Vodiane received small arms and rocket fire. Hostile snipers harassed Ukrainian troops at Hnutove. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, heavy shelling was reported at Novotoshkivke and Krymske, where Ukrainian redoubts were fired at by 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. Troikhizbenka came under 120 mm mortar fire, while Novooleksandrivka was hit by small arms fire, rocket propelled grenades and 82 mm mortars. In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, 82 mm mortar barrages struck Zaitseve and Verkhnyotoretske. Ukrainian forces at Novhorodske received small arms fire, while light weapons and 82 mm mortars were fired at Ukrainian outpost near Avdiivka. Pro-Russian tanks, supported by heavy machine guns, opened fire on Ukrainian troops at Troitske. A farm at Novoluhanske was set on fire by Zu-23-2 antiaircraft artillery.[54][55][56]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 85 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 28 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 25 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 32 occasions in Luhansk region[57]).[56][58][59] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that eight Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 6 May.[57] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 61 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 24 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery. One pro-Russian soldier was killed.[60][61] According to local officials, very heavy shelling was recorded within the borders of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, where the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire on 11 occasions. The main targets were Zholobok, Kirovsk, Frunze, Prishib, Krasny Yar and Sanzharivka. Ukrainian forces employed small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, antiaircraft guns, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled artillery.[62]

In the northern section of the demarcation line, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian positions at Krymske and Novotoshkivke which was also the target of heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. Rocket propelled grenades landed in Zolote and Stanytsia Luhanska. Heavy machine gun fire was reported at Novooleksandrivka. In the region of Mariupol, BM-21 "Grad" multiple rocket launchers were fired at Chermalyk, while 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Shyrokyne. Rebel forces used small arms and rocket launchers against Ukrainian redoubts at Vodiane and Pavlopil. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and horlivka, Avdiivka was shelled with banned 122 mm artillery. Ukrainian troops at Zaitseve and Luhanske were harassed with light weapons fire and 82 mm mortars. Marinka became the target of small arms and rocket launchers.[63][64] The commander of the Luhansk People's Republic militia, Colonel Andryi Marochko, denounced that Ukrainian forces carried out an offensive on the rebel stronghold of Zholobok, near Bakhmutka road, supported by heavy artillery fire in the area,[65] which prompted the evacuation of children from the nearby town of Kirovsk.[66] The bombardment also hit the settlements of Donetskyi and Frunze.[67] Pro-Russian sources denied reports of street fighting at Zholobok, and claimed that the defenders repelled three Ukrainian attempts to storm the village. The Ukrainian forces used small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, antiaircraft guns, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles.[68][69][70] One Ukrainian drone was shot down by ground fire.[71] Later in the evening there were unconfirmed reports of a fourth Ukrainian trust into Zholobok involving tanks. The source described the Ukrainian shelling as the heaviest since 2014.[72]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 71 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 20 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 28 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 23 occasions in Luhansk region[73]).[74][75] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and another eleven wounded and injured in the Donbass region on 7 June.[73] The Ukrainian military said that the situation around Zholobok was "stabilized". The source acknowledged the death of one soldier and eight others wounded in the clashes.[76] Pro-Russian authorities reported two soldiers killed and one wounded, an denied reports claiming the fall of Zholobok in Ukrainian hands.[77] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 52 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 20 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm artillery.[78] Local officials in the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces broke the truce on 27 occasions within the republic boundaries, including the offensive in the area of Zholobok. The Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, ZU-23-2 antiaircraft guns, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm and 152 mm artillery to attack pro-Russian positions at Kirovsk, Stakhanov, Almazna, Donetskyi, Kalynove, Frunze, Zholobok, Sokolniki, Smile, Lohvynove and Veselehorivka.[79]

In the region of Mariupol, Shyrokyne came under small arms and 120 mm mortar fire. Sartana, in the eastern outskirts of Mariupol, was shelled with 152 mm self-propelled artillery. Several rounds hit the headquarters of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine; seven servicemen were wounded. Around Donetsk city and Horlivka, pro-Russian tanks and armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Avdiivka later in the evening. The same area was fired at by light weapons, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Nearby Marinka became the target of small arms, heavy machine gun and 82 mm mortar fire. Small arms and grenade launchers were also used by rebel troops to pound Maiorsk and Luhanske, while 82 mm mortars landed in Zaitseve and Verkhnyotoretske. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, the separatists shelled Troikhizbenka with 120 mm mortars, Popasna with 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles and Katerinivka with heavy artillery. Small arms fire was reported at Nyzhneteple.[80] A teenager was injured by shelling in Kamyanka.[81] A 49-year-old female was injured by shelling in Marinka.[82]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 45 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 19 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 18 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region[82]).[83][84][85][86] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed, six soldiers and eight border guards were wounded and injured in the Donbass region on 8 June.[82] p;Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 65 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. Over the past week, the same sources recorded 395 Ukrainian violations of the truce, with 3,800 rounds fired from banned heavy weapons like mortars, tanks, artillery and multiple rocket launchers. The attacks affected 46 different settlements.[87][88] Authorities from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic reported 13 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military engaged pro-Russian positions at Pervomaisk, Zholobok, Kirovske, Horoshche, Prishib, Kalinivka, Kalynove, Lozove and Krasny Yar using small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery.[89]

Ukrainian positions at Novomyhailivka received antiaircraft artillery fire. In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, Avdiivka, Marinka, Verkhnyotoretske and Pisky came under small arms, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire. Armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske and Marinka. Ukrainian troops at Luhanske also came under light weapons fire. There were two proposals for a new ceasefire, one from ATO headquarters, the other from the contact group in Minsk. The Ukrainian military planned a truce between 24 and 26 June to coincide with the end of the school year.[210] The contact group offered a "harvest" ceasefire from 24 June until 31 August in order to allow famers to harvest crops.[211]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 22 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 12 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 8 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 2 occasions in Luhansk region[270]).[271][272][273] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and six were wounded and injured in the Donbass region on 29 June.[270] The fatality occurred at Kamianka.[274] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded 44 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 15 different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. Over the past week, there were 180 violations of the truce by the Ukrainian army, which fired 847 rounds of mortars, tanks, artillery and artillery rockets.[275] One pro-Russian soldier was killed in action and six were wounded on the same lapse.[276] The same sources claimed the shootdown of a Ukrainian army drone used for artillery spotting.[277] According to local officials, there were nine Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire within the boundaries of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic.
