This is a timeline of the War in Donbass, for October 2016. The timeline follows an ongoing conflict between Ukraine and anti-government pro-Russian separatists supported by Russian troops[1] in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.

1 October[edit]
According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 34 occasions on Ukrainian troops on 30 September, including on 16 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 10 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region.[2][3][4] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region during the last day of September. The casualties occurred north of Donetsk city, at Avdiivka.[5] Deputy minister of defence of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on 178 occasions on pro-Russian positions. Eighty-three incidents involved 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, tanks and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. The main targets were Zaitseve, Horlivka, Yasynuvata, Spartak, Oleksandrivka, Mikhaylivka, Zhabicheve, and Sakhanka.[6] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces from Stanytsia Luhanska opened small arms fire on pro-Russian troops at Knyaz Igor memorial.[7]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 17 occasions. Most incidents took place in the region of Mariupol, where the rebels fired small arms and rocket propelled grenades on Pavlopil, Shyrokyne, Hnutove and Novoselivka. Pavlopil also came under 82 mm mortar fire. West of Donetsk city, 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Avdiivka, which also became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. The same kind of weapons were used by pro-Russian forces to attack Novhorodske, near the town of Horlivka. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian forces at Novozvanivka, Novooleksandrivka and Stanytsia Luhanska received small arms, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire. Hostile snipers were active in the area of Novozvanivka.[8]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 47 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 20 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, on 17 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 10 occasions in Luhansk region. The rebels made a wide use of banned weapons, such as 82 mm and 120 mm mortars in several locations around Donetsk city and Mariupol and antiaircraft guns in the northern front (Luhansk region). Hostile armoured fighting vehicles shelled Ukrainian redoubts at Vodiane, north of Mariupol.[9][10][11] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 1 October.[12] Pro-Russian sources said that the Ukrainian military opened fire on 269 occasions on their positions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Most incidents occurred at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Oleksandrivka, Mikhaylivka, Zhabicheve and Sakhanka. The banned heavy weapons were employed specially in the surroundings of Donetsk city. Two pro-Russian soldiers were killed in action.[13] According to officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on five occasions inside the republic's territory. The village of Kalinove-Borshchevate was the target of small arms fire, rocket propelled grenades and 120 mm mortar volleys fired from Novoselivka, while Ukrainian troops from Stanytsia Luhanska targeted pro-Russian positions around Knyaz Igor memorial with small arms fire and antitank guided missiles. Small arms fire from Luhanske was reported at Lozove.[14]
According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 22 occasions. Avdiivka, Marinka, Verkhnyotoretske and Novhorodske, in the area around Donetsk city and Horlivka, came under light weapons fire. Avdiivka was also the target of heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades. Separatist troops in the area also fired automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. In the region of Mariupol, the rebels fired small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers to attack Pavlopil and Shyrokyne. Ukrainian troops at Vodiane received small arms fire. In the northern section of the demarcation line, heavy shelling was reported at Krymske, which came under small arms, rocket propelled grenade, 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. Separatist forces attacked Stanytsia Luhanska with small arms, rocket launchers and antiaircraft guns. Ukrainian troops at Novozvanivka were harassed with small arms fire.[15] The operational headquarters confirmed that one Ukrainian volunteer was killed at Krymske.[16][17][18] Later in the evening, Ukrainian sources on the field reported that pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian forces in Avdiivka,[19] while armoured fighting vehicles shelled Shyrokyne.[20]
As of 1 October, the warring parties had moved their forces several kilometres away from the town of Zolote, Luhansk Oblast, in accordance with the three security areas established by the Minsk agreements.[21]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 48 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 12 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 20 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 16 occasions in Luhansk region.[20][22][23] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and two others were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 2 October.[24] Pro-Russian officials claimed that Ukrainian troops opened fire 90 times on their positions with small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery directed by drones. The main incidents took place at Zaitseve, Vasiliivka, Yasinuvata, Sakhanka, Trudovske and Petrovsky dristict.[25] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported one pro-Russian soldier killed and two others wounded when Ukrainian forces attacked the area of Krymske with small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery.[26]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 15 occasions. In the area of Donetsk city, the Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. Harassing fire from small arms was reported in Popasna and Novooleksandrivka, in the northern section of the demarcation line, while in the region of Mariupol, rocket propelled grenades landed in Shyrokyne and Bohdanivka, where Ukrainian troops also received harassing fire. Small arms fire raked Ukrainian outposts at Pavlopil and Starohnativka. The Ukrainian military suspended the withdrawal from the safe area of Petrovske after pro-Russian forces opened up with small arms and automatic grenade launchers.[27]
One Ukrainian volunteer from the Right Sector party was killed in a clash with pro-Russian scouts during the night of 3 October.[28]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 32 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 10 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city and, on 16 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 6 occasions in Luhansk region.[29][30][31] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region on 3 October.[32][33] The casualty occurred in the region of Zaitseve.[33] Pro-Russian sources reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 126 occasions over the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and tanks. Ukrainian tanks engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Yasinuvata and Spartak, which also came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. Trudovske, Vesele, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport were likewise shelled from 82 mm mortars. Small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire was reported at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Yasinuvata, Victorivka and Sakhanka.[34] No Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were recorded in the territory of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic.[35]
According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 19 occasions. In the region of Mariupol, the rebels launched antitank guided missiles on Ukrainian redoubts at Slavne, while Shyrokyne and Hnutove came under small arms and heavy machine gun fire. Around Donetsk city, the stronghold of Avdiivka became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian troops at Novooleksandrivka, Novozvanivka and Popasna came under small arms, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire; 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys also landed in Novooleksandrivka. Hostile snipers were active at Stepne and Novooleksandrivka.[36][37][38]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 68 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 13 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 19 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 36 occasions in Luhansk region. The incidents involved attacks by pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles on Ukrainian forces at Talakivka and Lebedynske, in the region of Mariupol, and at Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka, in the northern front. Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka also became the target of 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery, while 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city.[39][40][41] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 4 October.[42] Deputy minister of defence of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on 247 occasions on their positions on the last 24 hours. According to the statement, the Ukrainian military shelled Trudovske with 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 152 mm howitzers, and Zhabicheve, Spartak and Yasinuvata with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Ukrainian tanks attacked pro-Russian redoubts at Zaitseve, supported by 82 mm mortar fire. Small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire was reported at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Yasinuvata, Kominternove and Sakhanka.[43] Two rebel soldiers were killed and another wounded in Makiivka by the explosion of an improvised device, which also struck an electrical subestation, leaving Scheglovskaya-Grubokaya mining complex without power and 126 workers temporarily trapped underground.[44] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire within the republic's boundaries on six occasions. Ukrainian forces from Popasna fired small arms and 120 mm mortars on Kalinove, while armoured fighting vehicles from the Ukrainian stronghold of Stanytsia Luhanska engaged pro-Russian entrenchments around Knyaz Igor memorial, which was also the target of small arms fire.[45]
The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that by 06:00 pm 13 attacks on their positions had taken place. Pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian positions at Balka Kosharna, near Slovianoserbsk, in the northern section of the demarcation line. Balka Krutenka, in the same area, came under 120 mm mortar fire, while the Ukrainian strongholds of Trokhizbenka and Novozvanivka became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm mortar barrages landed in Taramchuk, and hostile snipers were reported at Hnutove and Shyrokyne. Ukrainian troops at Chermalik, Starohnativka, Shyrokyne and Vodiane received harassing fire from small arms and heavy machine guns. West of Donetsk city, the rebels fired small arms fire at Maryinka.[46]
6 October[edit]
The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 40 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 8 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city and, on 20 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 12 occasions in Luhansk region. The rebels made wide use of banned weapons, specially in the northern section of the demarcation line, where Ukrainian positions were pounded by pro-Russian tanks near Slovianoserbsk, and 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles between Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka.[47][48][49][50] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian soldier was killed, another wounded, and the third serviceman contused in action in the Donbass region on 5 October.[50] Sources from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic recorded 130 Ukrainian attacks ontheir troops. Ukrainian tanks once again engaged rebel redoubts at Yasinuvata, which was also the target of 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery; 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys also landed in nearby Vesele, Spartak, Trudovske and Donetsk airport. Small arms and rocket launchers were fired at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Panteleymonivka and Spartak.[51] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic denounced that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on five occasions within the republic boundaries. The village of Kalinove became the target of small arms, automatic grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars firing from Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka. Rebel troops at Lozove came under small arms fire from Luhanske.[52]
According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 12 occasions. The Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka, west of Donetsk, was struck twice by heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades. In the same area, Ukrainian troops were fired at from small arms and rocket launchers in Maryinka. In the region of Mariupol, sniper fire was reported at Pavlopil, while rebel troops attacked Shyrokyne with small arms and rocket launchers. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian forces at Novozvanivka, Novooleksandrivka, Popasna and Stanytsia Luhanska came under small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire.[53]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 30 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 4 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 16 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 10 occasions in Luhansk region[54][55] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 6 October.[56] According to separatist sources, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire on 1352 over the past week; five pro-Russian were killed in action and other three wounded on the same period.[57] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported two Ukrainian violations of the truce inside the territory of the republic. Ukrainian forces from Satnitsya Luhanske attacked pro-Russian positions around Knyaz Igor memorial with small arms and Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns. Lohvynove, meanwhile, became the target of small arms fire and 82 mm mortar volleys fired from Luhanske.[58]

Around Donetsk city and Horlivka, Ukrainian redoubts at Avdiivka and Zaitseve came under machine gun, rocket propelled grenade and 82 mm mortar fire. In the region of Mariupol, small arms and sniper fire was reported at Hranitne and Shyrokyne. In the northern front, the rebels fired small arms and rocket launchers at Ukrainian troops near Novooleksandrivka on six occasions.[59][60]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 38 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 6 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, on 17 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 15 occasions in Luhansk region. The rebels used banned heavy weapons in a number of instances. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian troops at Maryinka and Shyrokyne, while Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka were shelled from 120 mm mortars, 122 mm self-propelled artillery and 152 mm howitzers.[61][62][63] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and two others contused in action in the Donbass region on 7 October.[64] Pro-Russian officials from the Donetsk People's Republic recorded 231 Ukrainian attacks on their positions over the past 24 hours. Most incidents involved the use of banned heavy weapons. The Ukrainian military shelled the rebel strongholds of Yasinuvata, Staromyhailivka, Trudovske, Zaitseve and Oleksandrivka with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Oleksandrivka also became the target of 152 mm howitzers. Small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire was also reported at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Sakhanka, Signalne, Oyerzanivka, Novolaspa and Petrovsky district One pro-Russian soldier was killed and another wounded.[65] Two civilian residents were wounded by shelling in Sakhanka.[66]
According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 24 occasions. Around Donetsk city, the rebels pounded Ukrainian redoubts at Avdiivka, Maryinka and Kamyanka with small arms fire, machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades. Krasnohorivka was the target of 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. The same weapons were used to shell the Ukrainian strongholds of Shyrokyne and Vodiane, in the region of Mariupol. Separatist troops fired small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers at Ukrainian positions in Starohnativka. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Krymske and Novozvanivka became the target of light weapons and grenade launchers.[67]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 48 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 5 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 27 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 16 occasions in Luhansk region.[68][69][70] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and another wounded in the Donbass region on 8 October.[71] Pro-Russian authorities from the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 252 occasions. The Ukrainian military shelled Yasinuvata, Kruta Balka, Sakhanka and Leninske with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire was reported at Zaitseve, Oleksandrivka, Gagarin coal mine, Vasiilivka, Leninske and Sakhanka. Ukrainian infantry also broke through the demarcation line at Leninske, killing two pro-Russian soldiers and taking another prisoner.[72] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported five Ukrainian violations of the truce inside the territory of the republic. Three houses were destroyed in Stakhanove when the village was shelled from Novozvanivka with 152 mm self-propelled artillery. Kalinove and Kalinove-Borshchevate became the target of automatic grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars also firing from Novozvanivka. Kalinove was also struck by 82 mm and 12 mm mortar barrages fired from Ukrainian positions at Novooleksandrivka.[73] The same sources claimed to have brought down a Ukrainian RQ-11 drone near Sokolniki.[74]

In the region of Mariupol, heavy shelling was reported at Shyrokyne, which came under 122 mm artillery fire. Rebel forces fired small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers at Ukrainian troops in Pavlopil and Hranitne.[75] In the area around Donetsk city and Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian forces at Avdiivka and Novhorodske supported by small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. Light weapons and rocket propelled grenades were also fired at nearby Maryinka.[76]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 22 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 4 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, on 16 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 2 occasions in Luhansk region.[77][78][79] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 9 October.[80] Pro-Russian sources from the Donetsk People's Republic claimed that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 314 occasions. Ukrainian tanks engaged pro-Russian entrenchments at Yasinuvata and Donetsk airport with the support of 82 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled guns, while 82 mm mortar volleys landed in Sakhanka, Oleksandrivka, Trudovske and Petrovsky district. Small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire was reported at Horlivka, Zaitseve, Panteleymonivka, Zheleznaya Balka, Velaya Kamyanka, Novo Mariivka, Sakhanka, Trudovske and Petrovsky district.[81] No Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were recorded in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic.[82]
According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 16 occasions.[83] At least 8 Ukrainian servicemen were wounded due to heavy shelling in the region of Mariupol.[84] The situation in and around Shyrokyne was characterised as tense. Pro-Russian forces used small arms, heavy machine guns, and armoured fighting vehicles to attack the Ukrainian strongholds of Hnutove, Pavlopil and Shyrokyne, in the region of Mariupol, Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka, in the northern front and Maryinka, west of Donetsk city. Heavy shelling was also reported at Talakivka and Shyrokyne, which became the target of 82 mm and 120 mm mortar barrages.[85] One female civilian was contused in Vodiane as a result of shelling.[86]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 47 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 3 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 27 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 17 occasions in Luhansk region.[87][88][89] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed, eight wounded, and three contused in action in the Donbass region on 10 October.[90][91] According to officials from the Donetsk People's Republic, the Ukrainian military opened fire on pro-Russian positions on 492 occasions, 334 of them using banned heavy weapons, among them 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. The main targets were Sakhanka, Kominternove, Sosnovske, Zaitseve, Zheleznaya Balka, Yasinovataya, Bezimenne, Staromykhailivka, Oleksandrivka, Trudovske and Donetsk airport. Four Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were reported inside the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. Pro-Russian forces at Kalinove became the target of small arms, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars firing from Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka.[92][93]

Ukrainian forces at Maryinka, west of Donetsk city, came under small arms, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire. Troops fired small arms at Ukrainian troops in the region of Luhansk, in the northern section of the demarcation line.[94]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 44 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 34 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 7 occasions in Luhansk region, and on 3 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city.[95][96][97] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 11 October.[98] Pro-Russian sources from the Donetsk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on 333 occasions on their positions. Most incidents occurred around Mariupol, where the Ukrainian shelled Kominternove, Oktyabr, Sakhanka and Leninske with 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. In the outskirts of Donetsk city, Yasinuvata, Oleksandrivka, Trudovske, Spartak, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles, supported by small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades, attacked pro-Russian entrenchments at Zheleznaya Balka, Donetsk airport and Maiorsk.[99] Authorities from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire two times inside the republic boundaries, when Kalinove was hit by mortar fire from Novozvanivka and Kalinove was shelled by automatic grenade launchers firing from Novooleksandrivka.[100]
According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 24 occasions. Most incidents took place in the region of Mariupol, where 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Vodiane and Talakivka. The rebels also fired small arms and mortars at Ukrainian troops at Shyrokyne.[101] In the northern section of the demarcation line, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Novooleksandrivka, supported by small arms fire and rocket launchers. Novozvanivka became under heavy machine gun and 82 mm mortar fire. Around Donetsk city, Novotroitske was struck by 120 mm mortar volleys.[102] Clashes between the warring parties took place at Marinka, where both sides exchanged heavy machine gun and mortar fire.[101] A 63-year-old woman was wounded in her home in Marinka by shelling at around 4:00 pm.[103]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 36 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 2 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 20 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 14 occasions in Luhansk region.[104][105][106] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that seven Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and two contused in action in the Donbass region on 12 October.[107] Eduard Basurin, deputy minister of defence of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic, reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on their forces on 168 occasions, 127 of them using banned heavy weapons. East of Mariupol, the Ukrainian military shelled Leninske, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Nova Tavrya and Bezimenne with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars and 122 self-propelled artillery. In the outskirts of Donetsk, 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Yasinuvata and Spartak. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Sakhanka, Yasinuvata and Petrovsky district, where the Ukrainian troops also employed small arms and grenade launchers. Basurin claimed that Polish and Georgian mercenaries from the "Azov" battalion broke through the demarcation line between Leninske and Kominternove. The intruders were repelled with heavy casualties. Pro-Russian forces also reported three Ukrainian BMPs knocked down.[108] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that the Ukrainian army broke the ceasefire on five occasions within the republic borders. According to these sources, 120 mm mortar fire struck Pervomaisk, causing extensive damage on a metal works plant and on a Civil Defence facility. Pro-Russian troops at Kalinove became the target of SPG-9 antitank recoilless rifles and 152 mm field artillery firing from Novozvanivka, while rebel positions around Knyaz Igor memorial came under small arms fire from Stanytsia Luhanska.[109]

In the northern section of the demarcation line, rocket propelled grenade fire was reported at Stanytsia Luhanska, while Ukrainian troops at Novooleksandrivka came under small arms fire.[110][111] The Minister of Defence Stepan Poltorak confirmed that the planned withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Stanytsia Luhanska has been postponed to unforeseen future.[112][113] Poltorak characterised the situation in Shyrokyne as the most troubled.[114]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 25 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 14 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 10 occasions in Luhansk region, and once in the surroundings of Donetsk city.[115][116][117] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 13 October.[118] Pro-Russian officials in Donetsk city recorded 2,060 Ukrainian attacks on their forces over the past week. Five separatist soldiers were killed and another nine wounded in action on the same period.[119] The same sources claimed that the Ukrainian military lost another BMP during an ill-fated attempt to storm the buffer zone around Leninske,[120] which also became the target of 152 mm self-propelled artillery.[121] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian troops from Novozvanivka shelled Kalinove with 120 mm mortars.[122]

Rocket propelled grenades landed in Novooleksandrivka, in the northern section of the demarcation line.[123][124][125]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 42 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 3 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 27 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 12 occasions in Luhansk region.[126][127][128] The Luhansk Regional State Administration reported in the morning that 18 ceasefire violations by pro-Russian forces had taken place on 14 October, and that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed by artillery fire and one civilian injured in his home by shelling.[129] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 14 October. The casualties occurred in the region of Mariupol (at Shyrokyne and Vodiane) and in the suburbs of Horlivka (Zaitseve); besides that one Ukrainian soldier was contused by shelling near Vodiane, Lysenko added.[130] Regarding the two deaths, that were reported by the authorities of the Luhansk Oblast, Lysenko claimed at noon that these were not combat related.[130][131] Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 608 occasions. Ukrainian tanks and 152 mm howitzers shelled Sakhanka, Bezimenne, Leninske and Semnadtsat, also pounded by 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm artillery. Ukrainian tanks also engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Yasinuvata, which was in the same way rocked by the explosions of 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys and 122 mm and 152 mm artillery rounds. The Ukrainian military also employed small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to attack the settlements of Oleksandrivka, Trudovske, Dokuchaievsk, Novolaspa, Velaya Kamyanka, Zaitseve, Horlivka, Ozeryanivka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Sakhanka and Petrovsky district. Three pro-Russian servicemen were killed and other three wounded in action.[132] Authorities from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic recorded eight Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire within the republic borders. Ukrainian forces from Novozvanivka, Novooleksandrivka and Troitske targeted Kalinove with small arms, automatic grenade launchers, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Small arms and automatic grenade launchers firing from Zolote harassed pro-Russian troops at Mariivka.[133]

The epicenter of the incidents was the region of Luhansk, in the northern section of the demarcation line, where heavy shelling was reported. The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 43 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 19 occasions in Luhansk region, on 18 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 6 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city.[135][136][137] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 15 October. The casualties occurred in Marinka.[138] According to pro-Russian authorities in Donetsk city, the Ukrainian army opened fire 408 times on their troops. Ukrainian forces used 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars to shell Oleksandrivka, Yasinuvata, Abakumove coal mine, Trudovske, Sakhanka, Mihaylivka, Vasiilivka and Spartak. The Ukrainian artillery also poured 152 mm artillery rounds on Trudovske, while Vasiliivka, Zaitseve, Horlivka, Zhabicheve, Oleksandrivka, Sakhanka, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport were fired at from small arms, rocket launchers and armoured fighting vehicles.[139][140] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported seven Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire inside the territory of the republic. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles from Stanytsia Luhanska engaged pro-Russian positions at Knyaz Igor memorial. Kalinove was the target of 120 mm mortars firing from Popasna, Novooleksandrivka and Novozvanivka, while 120 mm mortar barrages from Popasna landed in Stakhanove.[141]

West of Donetsk city, 82 mm mortar volleys landed in Avdiivka,[142] while residential areas of Krasnohorivka and Marinka came under 120 mm mortar and 122 mm artillery fire.[143] Donetsk People's Republic prime minister, Alexander Zakharchenko, confirmed the death of Sparta Battalion commander, Arseny Pavlov, better known as "Motorola", killed by an IED explosion in his apartment's elevator in Donetsk city. Zakharchenko said the assassination was carried out by a "Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group", and that the killing was a "ceasefire violation" and a "declaration of war" by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.[144][145][146]
A male civilian was injured in Kruta Balka in the afternoon.[147]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 61 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 9 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 23 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 29 occasions in Luhansk region.[148][149][150] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that one Ukrainian servicemen was killed and seven others wounded in action in the Donbass region on 16 October.[151][152] Pro-Russian officials reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on 398 occasions on their positions in the region of Donetsk, most of them using heavy artillery and mortar fire. The targets were Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Gagarin mining complex, Yasinuvata, Oleksandrivka, Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, Bezimenne, Leninske, Verkhnyotoretske, Spartak, Horlivka and Donetsk city.[153] One pro-Russian soldier was killed and three others wounded in heavy clashes around Leninske, east of Mariupol.[154] According to sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic the Ukrainian military broke the truce on two occasions inside the republic boundaries. Stakhanove came under 120 mm mortar fire and Zolote was the target of automatic grenade launchers.[155]

Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles opened up on pro-Russian positions at Yasinuvata, Horlivka, Zaitseve and Sakhanka, which also came under small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire.[161] Sources from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic reported five Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic boundaries. The spokesman of German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Merkel has invited President Vladimir Putin of Russia, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko, and President Francois Hollande of France to "assess the implementation" of the Minsk agreements.[165][166] Putin agreed to attend the 19 October meeting at Berlin.[167]

Four pro-Russian soldiers were killed and three others wounded.[172] According to officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on two occasions inside the republic borders, when 120 mm mortar rounds fired from Troitske landed in Kalinove and Lohvynove came under 82 mm mortar fire from Luhanske.[173]

The incidents involved the shelling of Vodiane by 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery, and the attack of armoured fighting vehicles on Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske.[175][176][177] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 19 October.[178] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded 481 Ukrainian attacks on their positions on the same period. The Ukrainian forces used small arms, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, tanks and 122 mm self-propelled artillery to pound the rebel strongholds of Zaitseve, Dokuchaievsk, Horlivka, Trudovske, Oleksandrivka, Spartak, Staromyhailivka, Sakhanka, Leninske, and Oktyabr.[179][180] Sources from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic reported three Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire within the republic boundaries. The participants of the talks on the Ukraine crisis in Berlin agreed to draw up a roadmap by the end of next month to carry out the Minsk peace agreement for eastern Ukraine.[184] According to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the talks with Russian, Ukrainian and French leaders about a stalled Ukraine peace deal "didn't achieve miracles".[185] According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the talks were "as a whole, positive".[186]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 39 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day, including on 18 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 12 occasions in Luhansk region, and on 9 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city. Multiple-launch rocket systems Grad were employed to shell Troitske, while pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian troops at Avdiivka and Verkhnyotoretske.[196][197][198] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 21 October.[199][200] Sources from the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic reported 261 Ukrainian attacks on their troops. The Ukrainian military used heavy weapons 74 times. The targets were Zheleznaya Balka, Zaitseve, Mikhaylivka, Yasinuvata, Vasiliivka, Zhabicheve, Spartak, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Trudovske and Petrovsky district. The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 35 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day, including on 20 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 9 occasions in Luhansk region, and on 6 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city.[214][215][216] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that seven Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 23 October.[217] Separatist authorities in Donetsk city recorded 230 Ukrainian attacks on their troops, 111 of them using 82 mm and 120 mm mortars.[218] The Ukrainian military also employed small arms, rocket launchers and armoured fighting vehicles.[219] The majority of the incidents occurred at Zaitseve, Yasinuvata, Staromykhailivka, Oleksandrivka, Dokuchaievsk, Kominternove, Sakhanka and Petrovsky district.[218] In the territory of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic, local sources recorded six Ukrainian violations of the truce. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Kalinove, followed by 120 mm mortar volleys. Ukrainian forces from Staryi Aidar fired small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars and antitank guided missiles at Raevka, while Vesela Hora came under 120 mm mortar fire from Shchastya. On 182 occasions, the Ukrainian military employed mortars and artillery. The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 54 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day, including on 34 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 3 occasions in Luhansk region, and on 17 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city.[246][247][248] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and six others were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 27 October.[249] An attack of pro-Russian troops in the industrial area of Avdiivka was repelled by Ukrainian forces, Lysenko added.[249][250][251] Separatist officials in Donetsk city reported that last week Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 2,578 occasions, 1,673 of them using mortars, tanks and artillery. Four pro-Russian soldiers were killed and nine wounded over the same period. A total of 26 settlements were shelled over the past seven days. Meanwhile, three civilians were killed and ten wounded on 27 October in Makiivka, which continued to be the target of heavy mortar and artillery fire.[252] Besides Makiivka, pro-Russian positions were targeted at Trudovske, Oleksandrivka, Staromyhailivka, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Leninske and Bezimenne. The Ukrainian army employed small arms, rocket launchers, armoured fighting vehicles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, tanks and 152 mm artillery. Banned heavy weapons, such as mortars, tanks and artillery were fired on 590 occasions.[253] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian troops from Popasna shelled Kalinove with 73 mm recoilless antitank rifles. One pro-Russian soldier was wounded. The Ukrainian military also attacked Vesela Hora with small arms and 120 mm mortars.[254][255]

Ukrainian tanks engaged Olenivka supported by 120 mm mortar and 152 mm artillery fire. Eight residential buildings and several power lines were destroyed.[261] In the territory of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on three occasions, according to local reports.
