30 December[edit]

Three Ukrainian soldiers were confirmed killed by the Ukrainian military and two wounded over the last 24 hours.[624] Members of the "Azov" battalion gave instead a toll of six soldiers killed and three wounded, all of them during the battle at Pisky.[625] Ukrainian spokesman Andriy Lysenko reported 12 attacks on Ukrainian troops in the same period. Besides Pisky, the main hotposts were Hranitne, Kamyanka, Maloorlivka, Nikyshyne and Novolaspa.[624] Pro-Russian media recorded three Ukrainian violations of the truce. According to these sources, Ukrainian tanks and automatic weapons from Pisky fired on northeastern Donetsk, while small arms fire from Avdiivka targeted militias positions in Spartak.[626]

Separatist militias opened fire on six occasions on Ukrainian outposts in the afternoon. Mortar and artillery fire hit the villages of Orlov-Ivanovka, Maloorlivka and Opytne. Small arms fire was reported in Donetsk airport.[627] Fierce fighting resumed at Pisky in the late evening, according to Ukrainian personnel on the ground. Pro-Russian forces stormed Ukrainian positions from three fronts supported by heavy gunfire, mortar, artillery and two tanks.[628] The Ukrainian supreme command of the operations in the east confirmed only two shellings on Pisky by mortars and automatic grenade launchers.[629]

31 December[edit]

One Ukrainian soldier was wounded in action in the last 24 hours.[630] Separatist militias opened fire on 11 occasions on Ukrainian troops over the same period. The rebels used small arms, automatic grenade launchers, rocket propelled grenades and mortars. The main incidents took place around Maryinka, Donetsk airport, Pisky, Hranitne, Proletarsky mining complex, Debaltseve and Redkodub. Drone surveillance activity was reported east of Mariupol.[631]

In the course of the day, pro-Russian forces attacked Ukrainian positions 15 times. In this case, the militias added the use of artillery to their weaponry. Shelling and shootings were heard in Donetsk airport, Pisky, Orlov-Ivanovka, Olkhovatka, Hranitne, Vodyane, Olenivka, Avdiivka, Novoselivka and Hnutove. Drones continued to overfly the areas around Mariupol and Bakhmutka road.[632]
