This is a timeline of the War in Donbass for November 2017. The timeline follows an ongoing conflict between Ukraine and anti-government pro-Russian separatists supported by Russian troops[1] in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.

1 November[edit]
The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 17 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 7 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 6 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region[2][3]); the fire was returned on 13 occasions.[4][5] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and five others were wounded in the Donbass region on 31 October.[2][3] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 36 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 12 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery.[6] Pro-Russian positions in 10 areas around Donetsk city were shelled by 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. The Ukrainian military also employed small arms and rocket launchers. In the region of Mariupol, Pikuzy and Sakhanka became the target of 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled guns.[7] According to local sources, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on seven occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, rocket launchers, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to pound pro-Russian redoubts at Kruta Hora, Sentianivka, Kalynove and Kalynivka.[8]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 5 occasions, no casualties were reported. In the region of Donetsk city and Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske, while antitank rockets landed in Avdiivka. In the region of Mariupol, small arms fire and heavy machine guns harassed Ukrainian troops at Talakivka and Vodiane.[9] One NGU serviceman was killed and another wounded by explosion of an explosive device at Marinka during the day, one Ukrainian soldier was injured at Krymske at around 11:00 pm.[10][11]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 17 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 7 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 4 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 3 occasions in Luhansk region[12][13]); the fire was returned on 13 occasions.[10][11][14] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed, one was wounded, and one was injured in the Donbass region on 1 November.[15][12][13] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 44 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 15 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks.[16] Ukrainian tanks engaged pro-Russian redoubts around Donetsk city, supported by 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys. The Ukrainian military also fired 82 mm mortars in the region of Mariupol, while Zheleznaya Balka, in the outskirts of Horlivka, was hit by small arms fire and antitank rockets.[17] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire 7 times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian positions at Sokolniki Veselehorivka, Sentianivka, Pervomaisk, Slovianoserbsk and Lohvynove.[18]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 4 occasions, the fire was returned on 3 occasions, one Ukrainian serviceman was reported wounded. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, rebel forces fired small arms and heavy machine guns at Ukrainian positions near Avdiivka and Kamyanka. Later in the evening, antitank rockets hit Butyvka mining complex and Luhanske. Small arms fire was reported at Zaitseve. In the region of Mariupol, Starohnativka was hit by 120 mm mortar fire. Ukrainian positions at Lebedinske were struck by small arms fire, heavy machine gun fire and antitank rockets. Ukrainian troops were also harassed with small arms and heavy machine gun fire in Krymske, in the northern sector of the demarcation line.[19][20]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 16 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 8 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 2 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 6 occasions in Luhansk region[21][20]); the fire was returned on 13 occasions.[22][23] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass region on 2 November.[21][20] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 33 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 15 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery.[24] Around Donetsk city, pro-Russian positions in 13 different locations were attacked with small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm self-propelled guns. In the region of Mariupol, four settlements became the target of small arms, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars. In the course of the past week, the same sources recorded 272 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. Heavy banned weapons such as mortars, tanks and heavy artillery were fire 1,743 times over the same period. Two pro-Russian soldiers and a civilian resident were killed.[25][26] According to local sources, Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire on eight occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian positions at Znamyanka, Prishib, Sokolniki, Veselehorovka, Kalynove and Lohvynove.[27]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 13 occasions, the fire was returned on 8 occasions. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, Ukrainian positions at Avdiivka, Kamianka, Pisky, Zaitseve and Kamianka were hit by small arms fire and antitank rockets. In the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian forces defending Vodiane. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Krymske was shelled with automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. Small arms fire was reported meanwhile in Troitske. One Ukrainian soldier was wounded near Kamianka at around noon,[28][29] another Ukrainian serviceman was wounded at Avdiivka at around 7:00 pm, and one soldier was wounded near Novooleksandrivka.[30][31]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 29 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 13 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 6 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 10 occasions in Luhansk region[32][33]); the fire was returned on 17 occasions.[30][31] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO confirmed at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 3 November.[32][33] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 52 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 18 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery.[34] The outskirts of Donetsk city were shelled by 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars (436 rounds), tanks (55 rounds), 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled guns (24 rounds). Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles were active in the regions of Mariupol and Horlivka with the support of small arms and rocket launchers.[35] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire 19 times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Kalynove, Krasny Liman, Lozove, Pervomaisk, Smile and Almazna.[36]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 11 occasions, the fire was returned on 9 occasions, no casualties were reported. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, rebel forces fired heavy machine guns and rocket launchers at Avdiivka and heavy machine guns at Krasnohorivka. Small arms and mortar fire was reported at Zaitseve later in the night, while armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian redoubts at Novoluhanske. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian forces at Vodiane, Pavlopil and Starohnativka received small arms and heavy machine gun fire. In the northern section of the demarcation line, 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Novooleksandrivka, and 82 mm mortar rounds struck Novotoshkivke and Krymske. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian positions at Popasna.[37] One Ukrainian soldier was injured at Novozvanivka during the day.[38][39]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 26 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 12 occasions in the region of Mariupol and on 14 occasions in Luhansk region[40][41]); the fire was returned on 17 occasions.[38][39] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was injured in the Donbass region on 4 November.[40][41] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 60 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 20 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks.[42] Ukrainian tanks, armoured fighting vehicles and mortars shelled ten settlements in the area of Donetsk city, supported by small arms and grenade launchers. Ukrainian troops fired small arms and rocket launchers at Panteleymonivka, Holmivsky and Zaitseve. The same kind of weapons were used to attack three different locations in the region of Mariupol.[43] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded four attacks by the Ukrainian military inside the republic's borders. Ukrainian forces used small arms, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, BMP-2 armoured vehicles and tanks to engage pro-Russian positions at Dolhe, Kalynove, Kalynove-Borshchevate, Kalynivka, Sentianivka, Prishib, Sokolniki, Lozove, Zholobok and Knyaz Igor memorial.[44]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 9 occasions. In the outskirts of Donetsk city, at least 10 antitank rockets landed in Opytne, while Avdiivka and Pisky came under 120 mm mortar fire. In the afternoon, the rebels fired BM-21 "Grad" multiple rocket launchers at Opytne and Avdiivka. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian positions around Vodiane and Talakivka were attacked by armoured fighting vehicles supported by grenade launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. The Ukrainian military returned fire with 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles and Zu-23-2 antiaircraft artillery. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Novotoshkivka came under 120 mm mortar fire. The separatists launched antitank rockets at Ukrainian troops at Krymske and Nyzhne Teple. Two Ukrainian soldiers were wounded, one at Talakivka and another at Krymske. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Popasna and Novooleksandrivka, but were repelled by Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles and 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles.[45][46]
6 November[edit]
According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 23 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 13 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk cit and on 10 occasions in Luhansk region[46][47]); the fire was returned on 14 occasions.[48][49] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 5 November.[46][47] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported 51 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 22 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, heavy artillery and BM-21 "Grad" multiple rocket launchers.[50] In the surroundings of Donetsk city, 450 artillery rockets were fired at pro-Russian redoubts from "Grad" multiple rocket launchers in 14 different areas. The Ukrainian military also shelled the positions using 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled guns. In the region of Mariupol, five settlements became the target of small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Small arms fire and antitank rockets hit pro-Russian outposts at Zaitseve, Myhailivka and Krasny Partizan, in the outskirts of Horlivka. One child was killed and two wounded in Staromyhailivka; two other civilian residents were injured at Yakovliivka.[51] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire 13 times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns and BMP-2 armoured vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Prishib, Smile, Lohvynove, Zholobok, Donetskyi, Lozove, Kalynove and Zhovte.[52]

Verkhnyotoretske was hit by 82 mm mortar fire. In the region of Mariupol, 120 mm mortar rounds landed in Vodiane. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian positions at Troikhizbenka were hit by mortar fire. Antitank rockets landed in meanwhile in Luhanske and Novoluhanske.[53][54]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 13 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 3 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 3 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 7 occasions in Luhansk region[55][56]); the fire was returned on 8 occasions.[57][54] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO confirmed at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 6 November.[55][56] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported 18 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 11 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars.[58] The Ukrainian army fired 35 mortar rounds at pro-Russian positions around Donetsk city, Mariupol and Horlivka.[59] Local sources said that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire eight times within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars and Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns to attack pro-Russian positions at Kalynivka, Lohvynove, Zhovte, Slovianoserbsk, Kalynove, Sentianivka and Zholobok.[60]
According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 6 occasions, the fire was returned on 3 occasions. In the outskirts of Donetsk, rebel forces fired heavy machine guns and automatic grenade launchers at Ukrainian forces near Nevelske. At dusk, antitank rockets landed in Butivka mining complex. In the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Hnutove, Nikolaevka, Vodiane and Berezove. Hnutove also came under 82 mm mortar fire. In the northern section of the demarcation line, heavy shelling was reported at Krymske, which was hit by 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys and heavy machine gun fire at night. Earlier, Luhanske and Trokhizbenka were also shelled with 82 mm mortars.[61] Later in the evening two Ukrainian servicemen were killed, one was wounded, and one was injured at Krymske, one Ukrainian soldier was injured at Novotroitske.[62][63]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 17 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 9 occasions in the region of Mariupol and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region[64][65][66]); the fire was returned on 12 occasions.[62][63] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed, one was wounded, and two were injured in the Donbass region on 7 November.[64][65][66] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 35 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 19 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery.[67] Around Donetsk city, 12 settlements became the target of antitank guided missiles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled guns. Two locations in Horlivka were hit by small arms fire, antitank rockets and 82 mm mortar rounds. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian tanks and mortars opened fire on pro-Russian positions in two different areas.[68] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire 13 times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Prishib, Zhelobok, Krasny Liman, Pionerske, Sokolniki, Kalynove, Kalynivka and Lohvynove.[69]

One Ukrainian soldier was killed in action at Butivka mining complex. In the region of Mariupol, Vodiane was shelled by armoured fighting vehicles and Novotroitske by antitank rocket launchers. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, 120 mm mortar rounds hit Krymske. Rocket propelled grenades landed in nearby Trokhizbenka. Armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian positions at Luhanske and Novoluhanske. One Ukrainian soldier was wounded near Krymske at around 10:00 am.[70][71]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 19 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 6 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city and in the region of Mariupol, and on 13 occasions in Luhansk region[72][71]); the fire was returned on 13 occasions.[73][74] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed at Butivka mining complex, two soldiers were wounded at Luhanske and Krymske, and one Ukrainian serviceman was injured in the Donbass region on 8 November.[72][71] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 23 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 13 different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antitank guided missiles, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and artillery.[75] Ukrainian troops fired small arms, rocket propelled grenades, antitank guided missiles and artillery on eight areas in the outskirts of Donetsk city. In the surroundings of Holrivka, small arms fire was reported at Zaitseve, while four settlements in the region of Mariupol were hit by 82 mm and 120 mm mortar rounds.[76] According to local sources, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire 12 times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to engage pro-Russian positions at Kalynivka, Kalynove, Kalynove-Borshchevate, Lohvynove, Krasnyi Lyman, Zholobok and Sokolniki.[77]

In the area of Donetsk and Horlivka, heavy machine gun fire and antitank rockets hit Ukrainian outposts around Avdiivka. In the region of Mariupol, the rebels fired rocket launchers at Vodiane, while small arms fire was recorded at Slavne. In the northern section of the demarcation line, heavy artillery fire was reported at Staryi Aidar, where Ukrainian forces received 122 mm artillery fire, while 82 mm mortar shells landed in Luhanske and Krymske. Small arms fire harassed Ukrainian troops at Valuiske, Donets, Troikhizbenka and Zolote.[78][79][80]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 19 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (on 5 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city and on 14 occasions in Luhansk region[80][81]); the fire was returned on 12 occasions.[82][79][83] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Andriy Lysenko, confirmed at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 9 November.[80][81] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 24 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 15 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks.[84] In the outskirts of Donetsk city, pro-Russian positions in ten areas were attacked with small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and tanks. In the region of Mariupol, four settlements came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. Around Horlivka, Ukrainian troops fired small arms and rocket launchers at Zaitseve. On the past week, the Ukrainian army broke the truce 263 times and fired 2,144 rounds from mortars, tanks and heavy artillery.[85] According to local sources, Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire on eight occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian positions at Sentianivka, Krasnyi Lyman, Sokolniki, Kalynove, Kalynivka, Lohvynove, Zholobok and Raevka.[86]
The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 16 occasions. Pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian redoubts around Pisky, in the outskirts of Donetsk city. Ukrainian forces in the same area were targeted by 120 mm mortars, antiaircraft guns and armoured fighting vehicles. Nearby Avdiivka was also struck by 120 mm mortar volleys. One Ukrainian soldier was wounded. In the region of Mariupol, rebel troops fired small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers at Hnutove and Vodiane. In the northern section of the demarcation line, the same weapons were used to harass Ukrainian troops at Krymske and Luhanske.[87] Later in the evening another Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the area of Mariupol.[88]

Russian media reported that Luhansk People's Republic (LNR) prime minister Igor Plotnitsky was overthrown by former police chief Igor Kornet and purportedly fled to Russia. Masked armed men, supported by military vehicles, occupied downtown Luhansk and stormed the office of LNR chief prosecutor, Vitaly Podobry, and de facto military prosecutor, Sergei Razno.[201] Pro-Russian press announced on 24 November that Plotnitsky had resigned "on health grounds" and was replaced by Leonid Pasechnik.[202]

In the region of Mariupol, three settlements became the target of small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Ozeryanivka, in the area of Horlivka was hit by small arms fire and antitank rockets.[208] The same sources denounced that the Ukrainian military seized the village of Hladsove, in the buffer zone north of Horlivka, in a blatant violation of the Minsk agreements. The statement also added that the Ukrainian government has occupied eight settlements in no-man land between 2015 and 2016.[209] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire seven times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Kalynove-Borshchevate, Smile, Almazna, Molodezhne and Sentianivka.[210]

Ukrainian authorities also reported fighting around Vodiane and Pavlopil, where Ukrainian forces returned fire with 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles after being targeted by small arms, grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars.[214][215][216][217] The commander of the Luhansk People's Republic "Prizrak" battalion, Alexey Markov, told pro-Russian media that a Ukrainian "commando unit" was destroyed while attempting an assault on two machine gun nests in Sentianivka, in the region of Svitlodarsk dam. He claimed that four Ukrainian soldiers were killed, while two of his men were wounded during the fighting.[218] The bodies of the Ukrainian soldiers, lying on the snow with their winter camouflage fatigues, were recovered by forces of the Luhansk People's Militia and handed over to the Red Cross. The pro-Russian also rounded up assault rifles, magazines, ammunitions and hand grenades.[219]
