Rules for using the soft sign in the Ukrainian language

The softness of consonants in writing is conveyed by the use after them я, ю, є, ї or soft sign (ь): близько, вільний, вірність, раненько, український, юнацький etc.[1][2]
In Ukrainian words[edit]
In Ukrainian words the soft sign is used:[3]
- After the letters д, т, з, с, ц, л, н, which denote soft consonants:[4]
- at the end of the word and syllable: мідь, суть, на́морозь, вісь, ґедзь, па́лець, крохма́ль, кінь; дя́дько, молотьба́, бли́зько, во́сьмий, Грицько́, кільце́, ганьба́, etc.;
- after the listed letters in the first paragraph and the letter р inside the word before o: дьо́готь, дзьоб, тьо́хкати, сьо́мий, льон, ларьо́к, трьох, царьо́к, etc.
- after л before the next letter to denote a consonant: Га́льченко, Гуцу́льщина, їда́льня, кільце́, кова́льський, па́льці, риба́льство, сільськи́й, спі́льник, etc.
- in verbs of the imperative mood and on -ться: стань, сядь, робиться, коситься, etc.
- In words with finite:
- -зьк-(ий), -ськ-(ий), -цьк-(ий); -зькість, -ськість, -цькість; -зько, -ськ-(о), -цько; -зькому, -ському, -цькому; -зьки, -ськи, -цьки: близьки́й, вузьки́й, воли́нський, доне́цький; бли́зькість, лю́дськість; бли́зько, ві́йсько, бага́цько; по-францу́ зькому (по-францу́зьки), по-украї́нському (по-украї́нськи), по-німе́цькому (по-німе́цьки).
- -еньк-(а), -еньк-(о), -оньк-(а), -оньк-(о); -еньк-(ий), -есеньк-(ий), -ісіньк-(ий), -юсіньк-(ий): ру́ченька, ба́тенько, голі́вонька, соколо́нько; гарне́нький, мале́сенький, свіжі́сінький, тоню́сінький.
- In the genitive case of the plural feminine nouns of the soft group of the first declension on -я: гри́вень, друка́рень, їда́лень, пісе́нь, ста́єнь; крамни́ць, ма́триць, робітни́ць and the middle kind of the second declension on -нн-(я), -ц-(е): бажа́нь, знань, кі́лець, місць, серде́ць and серць, but бур, зір, Мотр (after р);
- in verb forms of the present and imperative mood: бу́дить, бу́дять, ко́сить, ко́сять, ро́бить, ро́блять, хо́дить, хо́дять; будь, бу́дьте, бу́дьмо, лізь, лі́зьте, лі́зьмо, кинь, ки́ньте, ки́ньмо, трать, тра́тьте, тра́тьмо, etc.
- When ь is present in the form of the nominative case of the noun, it is stored in all other cases; if in the nominative case it is not present, then in other cases it is not written; cf.: ку́лька — ку́льці, дівчи́но́нька — дівчи́но́ньці, письмо́ — (на) письмі́, ре́дька — ре́дьці, but: га́лка — га́лці, гі́лка — гі́лці, сторі́нка — сторі́нці, па́смо — (у) па́смі.
- In words before the suffix -ся (-сь): стань — станься, сядь — всядься.
The soft mark remains:
- In the formed possessive adjectives: Танька — Таньчин, Зінька — Зіньчин, ненька — неньчин;
- When declining: призьба — на призьбі, ненька — неньці, вишенька — вишеньці, але: землянка — землянці, маска — масці.
- The digraph ьо is written after the letter to indicate the softness of the consonant before о: всього́, Ковальо́в, Линьо́в, льон, льох, сього́дні, сьо́мий, трьох, тьо́хкати, цього́.
In borrowed words[edit]
The soft sign (ь) in words of foreign origin is written after consonants д, т, з, с, л, н:
- before я, ю, є, ї, йо: ательє́, барельє́ф, бутоньє́рка, кондотьє́р, конферансьє́, марсельє́за, монпансьє́, мілья́рд, бульйо́н, сеньйо́р, дуе́нья, віньєт́ка, батальйо́н, каньйо́н; В’єнтья́н, Кордильє́ри, Нью-Йо́рк, Нья́са, Севі́лья; Готьє́, Лавуазьє́, Мольє́р, Нью́то́н, Реньє́, Віньї́, etc.
- in a series of words after л before the consonant and at the end of some words by tradition or pronunciation: альбатро́с, джо́уль, ко́льт, магістра́ль, фільм; Альбе́рта, Ба́зель, Було́нь, Де́льфи, Кро́мвель, Не́льсон, Рафае́ль, Ча́рльз, Шампа́нь, etc.
Geographical names[edit]
- The hard final consonant of the base ц is softened in all Slavic geographical names, in particular in suffixes -ець, -аць, -иц(я): Олóнець, Повенéць, Череповéць, Крáгуєваць, Стóлаць; Дембúця, Лóмниця, Рéчиця, Óломоуць, etc.
- suffixes of geographical names -ск, -цк are transferred respectively by Ukrainian suffixes -ськ, -цьк: Брянськ, Ґданськ, Курськ; Кузнéцьк, Трóїцьк, etc.
Surnames[edit]
Soft sign (ь) is written in surnames after letters to denote soft consonants:
- in surnames after soft consonants д, т, з, с, ц, л, н: а) with a separate pronunciation before я, ю, є, ї: Дья́конов, Панкрáтьєв, Третьякóв, Полóзьєв, Салáсьєв, Фатья́нов, Ілью́шин, Анáньїн; before consonants: Вóльнов, Конькóв; at the end of the word: Лось, Сóболь. But when я, ю mean the combination of a soft consonant with а, у, we do not write ь before them: Дя́гилєв, Зя́брев, Ляпунóв, Цявлóвський, Тюмéнєв;
- in surnames with a suffix -ець: Глýховець, Скитáлець. Softness of Polish consonants n, s, c, dz denoted in the Ukrainian language by the letter ь only at the end of the word: Кýронь, Дзісь, Цúрліць, Нéдзведзь, but Урбáнчик, Куснéвич, Свя́дек, Свідзи́нський.
The soft sign is not written[edit]
The soft sign is not written in the following cases:
- After the letter л in the letter combinations лц, лч, when they come from лк: ба́лка — ба́лці, га́лка — га́лці, галченя́, монго́лка — монго́лці, Ната́лка — Ната́лці, Ната́лчин, риба́лка — риба́лці, риба́лчин, спі́лка — спі́лці, спілча́нський, but: ґу́лька — ґу́льці, ку́лька — ку́льці, шпи́лька — шпи́льці.[5]
- In words баски́й, боязки́й, в’язки́й, дерзки́й, жаски́й, ковзки́й, пласки́й (пло́ский), порски́й, різки́й and derivative formations бо́язкість, в’я́зкість, ба́ско, рі́зко, etc.
- After р at the end of a syllable or word: вір, ві́рте, ги́рка, гірки́й, кобза́р, ларка́ , лі́кар, монасти́р, переві́р, секрета́р, тепе́р, тюрма́, школя́р, Ха́рків, царка́ (from царьо́к).
- After н before ж, ч, ш, щ and before the suffix -ськ-(ий): кі́нчик, промі́нчик, ме́нший, то́нший, У́манщина; воли́нський, громадя́нський, освітя́нський, селя́нський; but: бриньча́ти, до́ньчин, ня́ньчин, ня́ньчити, etc., because in the creative bases between the letters to denote consonants are ь: бри́нькати, до́нька, ня́нька.
- After all letters to indicate consonant sounds, except л, if they are followed by other letters that convey soft or semi-soft consonants: Бе́ршадь — бе́ршадський, ві́нця, дзвя́кнути, кінців́ка, ко́ристю, ланцюжо́к, При́п’ять — при́п’ятський, ра́дість, різдвя́ний, світ, свя́то, слід, сміх, сніг, сніп, сього́дні, танцюва́ти, цвях, ща́стя, but: різьбя́р (and різьба́р), тьмя́ний and derivatives thereof.
- After л in noun suffixes -алн-(о), -илн-(о): де́ржално, пу́жално, ціпи́лно, etc., but in nouns with the value of the minority we write ь: де́ржальце, пу́жальце, etc.
- Between two identical letters denoting soft consonants: буття́, воло́сся, галу́ззя, гілля́стий, життя́, камі́ння, ллє́ться, прила́ддя, сі́ллю.
- After the letters д, н, т before the suffixes -ченк-(о), -чук, -чишин: Фе́дченко; Па́нченко, безба́тченко; Радчу́к, Степанчу́к; Федчи́шин, Гринчи́шин,but after л we write ь: Га́льченко, Гальчу́к; Миха́льченко, Михальчу́к, Михальчи́шин.
- After the letter ц in some interjections (phonetic imitative words): бац, буц, гоц, клац and at the end of masculine nouns of foreign origin: кварц, пала́ц, пая́ц, Суе́ц, шприц, etc.
